termsrv.dll errors usually appear as “The program can’t start because termsrv.dll is missing from your computer” or “The code execution cannot proceed because termsrv.dll was not found.” The file belongs to Microsoft Windows and is associated with Remote Desktop Services, so the safest repair is to restore Windows components rather than download a loose DLL.
The 60-second answer
Do not download termsrv.dll from a random DLL website or copy a file from another Windows installation. On 64-bit Windows, the native copy normally belongs in %windir%System32; 32-bit system components use %windir%SysWOW64 through Windows file-system redirection. The directory names are counterintuitive: System32 contains the native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.

If the error remains, determine whether the problem is:
- an absent or corrupted

- a missing dependency;
- a stopped or damaged

- malware cleanup;
- an unsupported RDP modification; or
- broader Windows component-store damage.
What termsrv.dll does
termsrv.dll is a Microsoft Windows system DLL. Its description is Terminal Server Service, and it is associated with the built-in Windows service displayed as Remote Desktop Services. Microsoft describes Remote Desktop Services as a Windows Server and Windows capability for remote access and session functionality. See Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services overview.
The related service is named TermService. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET package, game library, or ordinary third-party application file. A program may report the DLL because it attempted to load a Windows component, but reinstalling unrelated redistributables is not the normal repair.
A missing-file message also does not prove that termsrv.dll itself is missing. Windows loader errors can identify a dependency that the service could not load. Error 126, “The specified module could not be found,” is one example. The named DLL may exist while another required module, service dependency, or system component is damaged.
First identify the failure
Before changing files, record the exact error and check whether the issue is limited to Remote Desktop.
Check the service
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Remote Desktop Services.
- Check its Status and Startup type.
- Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Note any error shown when you choose Start.
Microsoft’s general RDP troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking Remote Desktop Services and Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector on the relevant computers.
You can inspect the service configuration from an elevated Command Prompt:
sc qc TermService
If the service fails with error 126, do not assume that copying termsrv.dll will solve it. Check the Event Viewer and dependencies after running the standard repair commands.
Check whether Windows itself reports corruption
Open Settings and search for Windows Security, Windows Update, and Recovery. Note whether Windows has recently reported:
- failed updates;
- component-store corruption;
- a bad-image error;
- damaged system files;
- a restart or upgrade failure; or
- a security detection involving the file.
If several Windows features are failing, treat this as Windows servicing damage rather than an isolated application problem.
Verify the file safely
Check the expected path
On a 64-bit Windows installation, check:
C:WindowsSystem32termsrv.dll
If Windows is installed in a different directory, replace C:Windows with the actual Windows directory. The native system copy normally resides under %windir%System32.
Do not assume that a file in SysWOW64 is the 64-bit copy. On 64-bit Windows, WOW64 separates 32-bit system components from native 64-bit components. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
To inspect the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Locate
termsrv.dll. - Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the description, publisher information, and file version.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- View the signature details and confirm that Windows recognizes the signature as valid.
A missing signature, an unexpected publisher, an unusual location, or a file that does not match the Windows installation warrants a malware scan and system repair. Do not replace the file manually before establishing what happened.

- Open Settings > System > About.
- Record System type, such as 64-bit or 32-bit operating system.
A termsrv.dll from another Windows release may have a different architecture, servicing level, dependency set, or exported functions. Historical file listings include versions such as 64-bit 10.0.14393.0, 64-bit 10.0.10586.0, and older 32-bit releases, but these are historical examples, not a current compatibility table. Windows servicing can replace the file with a build-specific version.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when termsrv.dll is missing, corrupted, or produces a bad-image error.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window because the percentage may pause for a while.
- Read the final result.
DISM repairs the Windows component store used by later system-file repairs. If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, continue with SFC. If it reports that the source files could not be found, move to Windows Update repair or an official in-place repair rather than downloading the DLL.
Run SFC
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Typical outcomes include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC did not find protected-file corruption. The problem may be a dependency, service configuration, incompatible modification, or a failure outside the file itself.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test Remote Desktop Services.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again if necessary, then use Windows Update repair or an in-place reinstall.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: restart and run the scan again, or continue with Windows recovery options.
To target the expected file specifically, use the documented SFC syntax:

Repeatedly running SFC without recording what changed can make troubleshooting circular. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the issues behind repeated repair attempts and show what needs attention; its repair action is handled by the full version, and it is not required for a valid Microsoft repair.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A failed update or damaged component store can leave a system DLL unavailable even when the rest of Windows appears usable.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
- Test Remote Desktop Services.
Microsoft specifically recommends DISM followed by SFC for certain Windows Update corruption and installation failures. See the official Windows Update corruption guidance.

Use Windows 11 repair reinstall when available
Windows 11 may provide a repair option that reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the service.
The option may not appear on every edition or installation. Microsoft describes the process in Reinstall the current version of Windows.
Fix 3: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore when the problem started immediately after a software installation, update, driver change, cleanup tool, or other system change and a restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally affects system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs rather than personal documents. It is not a substitute for malware cleanup. Microsoft lists System Restore among its Windows recovery options.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and malware
Antivirus software or a malware-removal process may quarantine a genuine system file. It is also possible for malware to imitate or replace a Windows DLL.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
termsrv.dll. - Check the reported path, detection name, and action.
- Run a current security scan before restoring anything.
Restore a quarantined file only when its path, Microsoft digital signature, and security status establish that the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the system at risk. See Protection History in Windows Security.

Fix 5: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If termsrv.dll exists, passes signature checks, SFC reports no corruption, and only one application fails, the application may be damaged or incorrectly configured.

For a game or desktop program, use its official installer or launcher to repair or reinstall the program. Do not install an unrelated Visual C++ package, DirectX runtime, or .NET version simply because the error contains “DLL.” termsrv.dll is a Windows Terminal Server component, not a normal redistributable runtime.
Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit program and a 64-bit Windows service do not use interchangeable binaries. On 64-bit Windows, Windows uses separate system directories and WOW64 redirection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not copy:
- a 32-bit DLL into the native 64-bit system directory;
- a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application directory;
- a file from another Windows edition or build; or
- an old file listed in a historical version database.
If termsrv.dll is present but TermService still fails, check:
- Services for Remote Desktop Services and Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector.
- Event Viewer by opening Start, searching for Event Viewer, then checking Windows Logs > System around the failure time.
- The exact service error and any named dependency.
- Available disk space and signs of disk errors.
- Whether a security product blocked a related component.
- Whether an unofficial RDP modification changed the file or service configuration.
Error 126 can refer to a missing dependency, not necessarily the named DLL.
Fix 7: Update a related driver only when evidence points there
Drivers are not the normal first fix for a termsrv.dll error. Consider them only when Event Viewer identifies a display, network, storage, or other driver failure that began at the same time as the Remote Desktop problem.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the hardware category relevant to the Event Viewer error.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not use Device Manager to replace termsrv.dll. It manages hardware drivers, not Windows service DLLs.
When several devices need checking, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and identify outdated packages instead of making you compare versions manually; driver installation is completed by the full version, and it is not necessary unless driver evidence points to the cause.
Does regsvr32 repair termsrv.dll
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A service DLL loaded by the Windows service host is not automatically a self-registering COM DLL.
Running:
regsvr32 termsrv.dll
may produce an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That means registration is not applicable. It does not mean you need another regsvr32 switch.
Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update repair, System Restore, or an in-place repair instead. Microsoft discusses this registration error in its Q&A explanation of the missing registration entry point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 8: Perform an in-place Windows repair
Use an in-place reinstall when DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, Windows Update repair is unavailable or unsuccessful, and the installation still has broader integrity problems.

Why manual DLL downloads are unsafe
A loose download can have:
- the wrong Windows build;
- the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture;
- an invalid or missing Microsoft signature;
- incompatible dependencies;
- altered exports;
- malware; or
- no relationship to the actual dependency that failed.
Manual copying can also leave the Windows component store and servicing metadata inconsistent. It is not the preferred Microsoft recovery method. If offline repair is unavoidable, use matching official Windows installation media as a system-recovery source, not a generic DLL installation.

What to collect if every repair fails
Before escalating to Microsoft support or an experienced technician, collect:
- the exact error text;
- Windows edition, version, build, and architecture;
- the full path where
termsrv.dllwas found or expected; - the file’s Details and Digital Signatures information;
- the result of
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth; - the result of
sfc /scannow; - the output of
sc qc TermService; - the Remote Desktop Services startup error;
- relevant Event Viewer entries;
- recent Windows Update, antivirus, cleanup, or RDP-modification history; and
- whether other Windows components are failing.
This evidence separates a missing file from a missing dependency, a damaged service configuration, a wrong architecture, or a wider Windows installation problem.
FAQ
Is termsrv.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with the Microsoft Windows Operating System and has the description Terminal Server Service. Verify the file path and digital signature on the affected installation rather than trusting a downloaded copy.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhere should termsrv.dll be located?
On 64-bit Windows, the native copy normally belongs under %windir%System32. Windows uses %windir%SysWOW64 for redirected 32-bit system components. The exact file version depends on the installed Windows build.
Should I download termsrv.dll?
No. Restore it through DISM, SFC, Windows Update, System Restore, or an in-place Windows repair. Random DLL downloads can be malicious or incompatible.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Not normally. termsrv.dll is a Windows Terminal Server component, not a standard Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file.
Can I use regsvr32 termsrv.dll?
Usually not. A service DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM DLL. A missing DllRegisterServer entry point means registration is not the correct repair.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
Check TermService, dependencies, Event Viewer, antivirus history, disk health, architecture, and unsupported RDP modifications. Error 126 may identify a dependency rather than termsrv.dll itself.
What if an unofficial RDP patch modified the file?
Return Windows to its original state with DISM and SFC. If those repairs fail, use Windows Update repair or an in-place reinstall. This guide does not cover bypassing licensing or enabling unsupported concurrent RDP sessions.
When should I reinstall Windows?
Use the in-place repair path when component repair, Windows Update repair, and System Restore do not restore the service or when multiple Windows components are damaged. Choose Keep personal files and apps and confirm the choice before continuing.
