If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, repair or remove the associated Sony printer package rather than downloading a loose DLL.
What this file actually does
The file belongs to the legacy Sony DPP printer-driver family used by models in the DPP-FP, DPP-EX and related DPP ranges. A language monitor is a printer-driver component that helps Windows and the print spooler communicate with the printer and monitor print jobs.
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component or ordinary game DLL. It is also not a core Windows application file in the usual sense. Public records associate it with the Windows printer package prnso002.inf and related Sony files, including SODPPUI2.DLL and SODPPUN2.DLL.
Some records attribute the package to Microsoft because Windows may have distributed or catalogued the driver. That does not establish that Microsoft created the Sony printer technology. The practical distinction is important: SFC cannot normally reinstall an absent third-party printer driver, while reinstalling the correct printer package can.

A legitimate copy may appear under a path such as:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
That location is normal for Windows-managed driver packages. It does not mean the file must be copied into System32. DriverStore can contain architecture-specific folders and installation metadata managed by Windows.
Windows 10 or Windows 11 can still encounter the file after an upgrade, migration, backup restoration or installation of an old printer package. Its presence on a newer system does not prove that it ships with every current Windows installation.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Error while adding or using a Sony photo printer | Damaged or incomplete printer driver | Remove and reinstall the model’s driver |
| Error when Windows starts or the Print Spooler runs | Stale printer or driver reference | Remove the old printer and driver package |
| Error immediately after antivirus action | File was quarantined | Check quarantine, path and signature |
| Error after moving to Windows 10 or 11 | Legacy driver incompatibility or migration residue | Use Windows Update or a compatible Sony package |
| Several unrelated Windows repair errors | Component-store corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Error with no Sony printer ever installed | Old image, restored profile or unwanted software | Investigate startup items, printers and scheduled tasks |
| Error only in a printer utility | Damaged Sony utility or driver installation | Repair or reinstall the complete Sony software |
Fix 1: Identify the printer that needs the file
Start by determining whether the computer still has a Sony DPP printer installed.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for a Sony DPP-FP, DPP-EX or similar Sony photo printer.
- Select the printer and note its exact model.
On Windows 10, open Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners instead.

One-click scans. No signup required.
If the printer is still connected, turn it on and try printing a Windows test page:
- Select the printer.
- Choose Printer properties.
- Open the General tab.
- Select Print Test Page.
If the test page prints, the error may come from a stale startup entry or utility rather than the active driver. If it fails with the same DLL message, continue with a clean driver reinstall.
If no Sony printer is listed, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Look for an old or disconnected Sony printer.
Also check Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Print server properties. The interface can vary, but the Drivers tab lists printer drivers installed on the machine.
Fix 2: Remove the broken printer and driver
Do not delete individual files from C:WindowsSystem32DriverStore. Remove the printer through Windows so the spooler and driver metadata remain consistent.

Then remove its driver package:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
control printers. - Press Enter.

- Choose Print server properties from the toolbar or menu.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the Sony DPP driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Confirm and restart Windows.
If Windows says the driver is in use, restart the Print Spooler first:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- Repeat the driver-removal steps.
If the driver still cannot be removed, stop the spooler:
net stop spooler
Remove the printer and driver through Print server properties, then start the service again:
net start spooler
A successful cleanup means the old Sony printer and its driver no longer appear, and Windows no longer reports sodpplm2.dll during startup or spooler activity.

Use the exact printer model, not a similarly named DPP driver. The safest source is the model’s official Sony Support page or a driver supplied through Windows Update.
For an official Sony package:
- Identify the printer model from its label or the old Windows entry.
- Go to the Sony Support site using a browser.
- Search for that model.
- Open its Drivers & Software or Downloads section.
- Download the driver intended for your Windows version and system architecture.
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the installer requests it.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Reconnect the printer only when prompted.
- Restart Windows.
- Print a test page.
Older Sony documentation may direct Windows 7 users to an inbox driver or Windows Update instead of the original CD software. That is often preferable to forcing an old installer onto Windows 10 or Windows 11.
For a Windows Update installation:
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates if it appears.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a matching Sony printer driver if listed.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners and add the printer.
If Windows Update does not offer a Sony package, select Add device in Printers & scanners and follow the manual printer setup. Do not choose a random driver merely because its name looks similar.
Manually comparing driver versions across many old hardware packages is time-consuming, especially after a Windows upgrade. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the available repair, while the full version performs the driver installation; for this file, the Sony model-specific package remains the definitive fix.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A sudden error after a security scan may mean the file was removed. The filename alone is not enough to prove that a copy is safe.

In Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
sodpplm2.dll. - Expand the event and inspect the original path.
- Check whether the path belongs to a Sony printer driver under Windows’ driver repository.
- If the detection is clearly a false positive and the driver package is legitimate, use Actions → Allow on device only according to your organization’s security policy.
- Restart Windows and test the printer.
If the file was in a user-writable folder, a temporary directory or an unrelated application directory, do not restore it. Run a full scan and reinstall the complete driver from Sony Support or Windows Update instead.
A legitimate filename can be copied by malware. Check the file’s path, digital signature and association with the printer package. Do not treat a matching filename as proof of authenticity.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when SFC has reported protected system-file damage, several Windows components are failing, or Windows Update itself is malfunctioning. It is not the primary repair for an absent Sony driver.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent.
Restart and test the printer or the action that produced the error.
Possible SFC results include:
- Did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files appear intact.
- Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more.
If Windows Update cannot provide repair content, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows edition, language and architecture. Do not use this command with an arbitrary folder.

Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed makes diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what Windows issues it identifies, while the full version performs the repair; it does not replace reinstalling the Sony printer package when that package is missing.
Fix 6: Check architecture and compatibility
A 32-bit driver component cannot be replaced with an arbitrary 64-bit copy, and the reverse is also true. The complete printer package must match both the printer model and the installed Windows architecture.

To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Look at System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Use a driver specifically intended for that architecture. Do not rely on a third-party file listing’s architecture label without validating the complete signed package.

If the Sony printer has been removed but the error appears at every logon, another component may still be calling the old driver.
Check these locations:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Remove old Sony printer utilities that are no longer needed.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete Sony printer utility if its purpose is clear.
- Open Task Scheduler from Start.
- Review Task Scheduler Library for an old Sony entry.
- Disable or remove it only if it clearly belongs to the removed printer.
Restart Windows. If the message stops, the stale reference was the cause.
Do not use registry cleaners or delete unknown registry entries. If an office-managed computer still generates the error, have an administrator inspect the printer queue, installed driver packages and management scripts.
Should you use regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver support file installed through an INF package should not be assumed to support self-registration.
Running commands such as these is not a general repair:

regsvr32 sodpplm2.dll
regsvr32 /u sodpplm2.dll
They can produce misleading errors or alter registration without repairing the printer package. Reinstall the complete driver instead.
Do not download or copy the DLL manually
Avoid downloading sodpplm2.dll from random DLL repositories. A loose file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different package or fail because other driver files and INF metadata are also missing.

Do not copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not place it beside an unrelated application to suppress the message. Use the official Sony model-support package or Windows Update, then let Windows install the file in the correct driver location.
FAQ
Is sodpplm2.dll a Windows file or a Sony file?
It is a Sony DPP printer-driver component that Windows may have distributed as an inbox or Windows Update package. Microsoft attribution in some records does not make it a general-purpose core Windows DLL.
Is it safe?
The legitimate component is associated with Sony DPP printer software, but safety depends on its path, signature and installation source. A copy in an unusual folder deserves scanning and investigation.
Is it related to games, Visual C++ or DirectX?
There is no credible indication that modern games normally require it. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX or .NET is not the correct first response to this printer-driver error.
Can SFC restore it?
Only if Windows treats the relevant copy as a protected component and has valid repair content. SFC will not reliably reinstall a missing third-party Sony printer driver.
Why does it appear after uninstalling a printer?
Windows may retain a driver package, spooler reference, startup utility or scheduled task after the visible printer is removed. Remove the driver through Print server properties, then restart the Print Spooler.
What if I no longer own the printer?
Remove the old printer, driver package and Sony utilities. If the message continues, check startup apps and scheduled tasks. There is no reason to restore the DLL solely to preserve an obsolete printer installation.
Does the error prove malware?
No. A damaged or stale printer driver is the more direct explanation when the error appears around printing or spooler activity. Investigate malware when the file is in an unusual location, unsigned or unrelated to any Sony printer package.
