Beta usually means a game is being tested; soft launch means it has been released to a limited set of markets or players; and early access is a platform- or publisher-specific label for access before a broader release. They are not mutually exclusive stages: a mobile game can be in beta and limited to selected regions, for example. The right interpretation depends on the store and the developer’s use of the term.
How the three terms differ
| Term | What it mainly describes | What players may encounter |
|---|---|---|
| Beta | A testing purpose or distribution program. | Internal, invited, or open testing; the build may be experimental, and feedback may be private or public depending on the program. |
| Soft launch | A limited release to selected markets or audiences. | A game that may be publicly discoverable in those markets, accept public reviews, and test real-world performance or monetization. |
| Early access | A storefront or publisher label for access before a broader release. | Meaning, visibility, and rules depend on the platform and the game’s listing. |
These labels describe different dimensions, not a universal sequence. A beta can be limited to a particular country, while a game described by its developers as a beta may also be labeled “early access” by a storefront. Check the store listing and the developer’s notes rather than assuming the label alone tells you how mature the game is.
What “early access” means on Google Play
Google Play Help draws a specific distinction: “Early access apps are apps that haven’t been released yet,” while “Beta apps are newer and more experimental versions of apps that are already released.” Google also warns that early-access and beta apps may be less stable than most apps. These are Google Play’s definitions for its own consumer experience, not a universal industry definition of early access. Google Play Help: Try new Android apps before their official release
Google Play’s developer guidance treats testing tracks, soft launch, pre-registration, and global launch as distinct tools or phases. Its framework describes a soft launch as a release in selected regional markets where players can find the game and leave public reviews; developers may also test user acquisition and monetization. That guidance was published on November 24, 2020, so it is useful for understanding the distinction but should not be treated as a current guide to Play Console steps, eligibility, or limits. How beta access works on Google Play and Apple
Google Play testing
Google’s developer guidance describes closed beta as a targeted, invitation-based test, while an open beta can be discoverable to players through the store. In the described open-beta track, feedback is private rather than posted as public reviews. The same guidance explains that testing can be used to examine game loops, the in-game economy, and server load. Those track descriptions come from 2020 guidance; developers should consult current Play Console documentation for present-day controls and limits.
For historical context only, that 2020 guidance described internal testing for up to 100 users and closed beta for up to 100,000 users invited by email, with Google Groups available for unlimited invitations. These are not verified current limits.

Apple TestFlight
Apple’s TestFlight is a beta-testing service for apps and games. Internal team members or invited external testers can download builds, test them, and submit feedback through TestFlight. This explains one way Apple distributes beta builds; it does not establish a universal Apple definition of soft launch or early access. Apple Developer: App Store, including TestFlight beta testing
What a soft launch tests—and what it changes for players
A soft launch puts a game into selected markets under more live conditions than a private or invitation-only test. Depending on the release, players may encounter a production version, public reviews, user acquisition campaigns, in-app purchases, and ongoing tuning. The goal may include learning about retention, market response, acquisition economics such as cost per install (CPI) relative to lifetime value (LTV), and technical performance. None of those activities is guaranteed by the label: soft launch is a practice, not a uniform store program.

One example is Rovio’s Small Town. Google Play’s 2020 case study reports that the game entered soft launch in October 2019 in the United States, Sweden, Finland, and Poland after short internal tests. Rovio used the rollout to study KPIs and marketability, including CPI versus LTV. Because it had released the production version in the United States, it could not run a Google Play pre-registration campaign there. Gameplay changes also affected some players’ progress and prompted complaints. This is a single historical case, not a prediction of what every soft launch will involve. - Availability: Is the game open to anyone, restricted to invited testers, or available only in certain countries?
- Feedback and reviews: Can you leave a public store review, or is feedback sent privately through a testing program?
- Stability: Does the developer warn that the build is experimental, incomplete, or likely to change?
- Progress: Could saves or account progress reset during updates, a transition to another version, or an uninstall? Google Play warns that users may lose progress when leaving or uninstalling a beta app.
- Payments: Are purchases enabled, and does the developer explain what happens to purchased items or progress when the game changes or launches more widely?
- Market context: Is the release limited to a region whose audience, pricing, or availability differs from yours?
Do not assume early testers represent the eventual global audience. A private test, an open beta, and a market-facing soft launch can reach different players, expose the game to different regions, and collect feedback in different ways. Results from one group are evidence about that group and setup—not a universal forecast.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why beta and soft-launch results are not interchangeable
Beta testing can focus on stability, usability, feature feedback, or specific gameplay questions. A soft launch can add signals from a live market, including public response and acquisition economics. Because the audiences, visibility, geography, and feedback rules may differ, results need to be interpreted in context.

A 2018 presentation by Nordeus product manager Mladen Dulanovic compared beta and soft-launch results from one project. Its retention and CPI figures are project-specific and do not establish current benchmarks for mobile games generally. There is no established universal conversion, retention, or revenue advantage that makes one label inherently better than another. GDC Vault: “Beta vs Soft Launch in Mobile Games”
Quick Recap
Which label matters most to you?
- If you want to test a build: Look for beta details, the testing channel, and how feedback is collected.
- If you want to know whether the game is live in a limited market: Look for the countries where it is available and whether its store page accepts public reviews.
- If you see “early access”: Check which platform is using the label and read the listing’s stability and progress notices. On Google Play, it distinguishes unreleased early-access apps from beta versions of already-released apps.
