Solo Leveling: Ragnarok is the continuation of the Solo Leveling franchise, although official sources use two labels: Yen Press and Ize Press market the English comic as a sequel, while Kakao Entertainment describes the web novel as a spin-off. Both descriptions point to the same direct connection: Sung Soo-ho (also rendered Sooho Sung) is the son of Sung Jin-woo, the original series’ protagonist.
Ragnarok moves the spotlight to Soo-ho. His parents disappear, strange visions begin to reveal themselves as memories, and a crisis at his college triggers an awakening. The story then asks what Jin-woo left behind, why Soo-ho’s abilities were dormant, and what threatens Earth after the original story’s conclusion. The available publisher descriptions establish that family and story continuity, but they do not publish a complete formal canon policy or a scene-by-scene bridge from every original epilogue event.

What is Solo Leveling: Ragnarok?
Solo Leveling: Ragnarok is a follow-up story centered on Sung Soo-ho, the son of Sung Jin-woo. Jin-woo remains the key link to the original series, but Ragnarok is not presented as another adventure led by the same protagonist. Its main character is a new generation dealing with a legacy he did not choose and cannot initially understand.
Yen Press and its Ize Press imprint describe the English comic as “the highly anticipated sequel” to the fantasy novel and comic Solo Leveling. Kakao Entertainment’s January 12, 2024 newsroom article uses a different classification, calling the web novel a spin-off that follows Jin-woo’s son. These are not necessarily contradictory plot descriptions. “Sequel” identifies the comic’s position in the English publishing line, while “spin-off” describes the web novel as a branch of the original franchise focused on a different lead.
#1 Best Overall
No official page in the available material issues a separate, detailed ruling defining every Ragnarok event as canon or explaining how each post-ending episode fits. The safest precise description is therefore: Ragnarok is an officially connected continuation of the Solo Leveling world, marketed as a sequel in English comic publishing and described as a spin-off in Kakao’s web-novel coverage.
Who is Sung Soo-ho?
Sung Soo-ho is Sung Jin-woo’s son and Ragnarok’s central viewpoint character. The connection is biological, narrative and thematic: Soo-ho inherits a family history tied to the gates, monsters and powers that shaped the original series, while also confronting the consequences of being Jin-woo’s child.
Yen Press introduces Soo-ho as an apparently ordinary college student. That ordinary life is disrupted by two unresolved facts: his parents have gone missing, and he has no clear understanding of the legacy attached to his family. Tappytoon’s licensed-series description adds that Soo-ho experiences visions that turn out to be genuine memories. A near-death experience awakens dormant memories and exposes the truth of his bloodline.

This setup makes Soo-ho more than a replacement protagonist. He begins with an incomplete, possibly suppressed relationship to the original story. Readers learn about Jin-woo’s legacy through Soo-ho’s investigation, confusion and awakening rather than through a simple retelling of the first series.
How does the plot connect to the original?
Jin-woo’s family is the direct bridge
The most explicit continuity fact is Soo-ho’s parentage. He is Jin-woo’s son, so Ragnarok takes place in the same fictional lineage rather than introducing an unrelated cast in a similar setting. The inherited legacy is central to the premise: Soo-ho must discover who his father is in the larger history of the world and what that history means for him.
The parents’ disappearance creates the mystery
Ragnarok’s synopsis says Soo-ho’s parents disappeared around the time gates began appearing. Their absence is not background decoration; it is one of the reasons he has to investigate his identity and the danger surrounding Earth. The available summaries do not disclose a complete resolution to that mystery, so it would be inaccurate to state exactly where Jin-woo is, why both parents disappeared, or how every event is explained.
The awakening echoes the original without repeating it
After a monster outbreak on campus, Soo-ho risks himself to save a classmate. He then receives a system notification telling him that he has become a Player. That moment supplies a recognizable structural connection to Solo Leveling: an apparently vulnerable person receives access to a system and enters a larger supernatural conflict. The difference is the context. Soo-ho’s awakening is bound to his memories, his family and the legacy of Jin-woo, rather than simply replaying Jin-woo’s original journey.

Tappytoon frames the danger facing Earth as part of the central mystery. This keeps Ragnarok connected to the scale of the original story while shifting the immediate question from “How does Jin-woo rise?” to “What has been left unresolved, and can Soo-ho survive learning the truth?”
Is Ragnarok set after the original ending?
Yes. Yen Press describes the comic as taking place years after the epic conclusion of Solo Leveling. That wording establishes a later point in the timeline, not a side story occurring simultaneously with Jin-woo’s main campaign.
“Years after” is important because it explains why Ragnarok can introduce Soo-ho as a college student and build its own inciting incident. It also means readers should not expect a chapter-by-chapter continuation that begins immediately after the original final battle. The story has a time gap, a new lead and a mystery about what happened to Soo-ho’s parents during the intervening period.

The sources establish the time relationship and family continuity, but they do not provide a complete chronology of every original epilogue event. Treat detailed claims about the exact transition between the ending and Ragnarok as unconfirmed unless a specific official chapter or catalog description states them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo you need to read the original side stories and epilogue first?
Not as a formally stated requirement. Kakao Entertainment reported that, after the original web novel concluded, the original webtoon received special episodes covering side stories and an epilogue. Those episodes belong to the post-conclusion run of the original series.
They may provide useful context for readers who want the fullest possible route through the franchise, especially before starting a story about Jin-woo’s son. However, the official pages reviewed do not say that every side-story episode is mandatory before Ragnarok, nor do they map each side-story event directly to a Ragnarok plot point. The side stories should therefore be treated as optional background for continuity, not as a documented prerequisite.
A practical reading order
- Read the original Solo Leveling story. This establishes Jin-woo, the gate system and the major history that Soo-ho inherits.
- Add the original webtoon’s special episodes and epilogue if you want additional post-ending context. They are part of the original webtoon’s later material, not alternate chapters of Ragnarok.
- Begin Solo Leveling: Ragnarok. The new story supplies Soo-ho’s own introduction and explains the information he discovers about his family.
If your priority is simply understanding the premise, Ragnarok’s official synopsis identifies Soo-ho, his missing parents, the campus outbreak and his awakening. If your priority is tracing every possible connection, read the original’s additional episodes before or alongside Ragnarok, while remembering that no official guide in the available material declares a mandatory order.
Original series versus Ragnarok: what changes?
| Reading point | Solo Leveling | Solo Leveling: Ragnarok |
|---|---|---|
| Primary protagonist | Sung Jin-woo | Sung Soo-ho, Jin-woo’s son |
| Timeline | The original story and its conclusion | Years after the original’s conclusion |
| Starting situation | Jin-woo’s own rise through the gate-and-system conflict | Soo-ho appears to be an ordinary college student before a crisis awakens his powers and memories |
| Main personal question | How Jin-woo survives, grows and confronts the forces behind his world | What happened to Soo-ho’s parents, what his bloodline means and what Jin-woo’s legacy demands of him |
| Relationship between works | Foundational story | Officially connected follow-up; called a sequel by Yen Press/Ize Press and a spin-off by Kakao Entertainment |
This is a comparison of entry points, not a claim that the two works compete as separate continuities. Ragnarok depends on the importance of Jin-woo’s history while giving Soo-ho a distinct conflict and perspective.

How the original side stories differ from Ragnarok
The original webtoon’s side stories and epilogue expand the completed Solo Leveling series. They are special episodes attached to that original webtoon run after the web novel had concluded.
Ragnarok is a separate follow-up project with a new lead, a later setting and its own opening mystery. Calling the side stories “Ragnarok chapters” would conflate two different publications. Likewise, describing Ragnarok as merely an epilogue would understate its independent premise. The accurate distinction is:
- Original side stories and epilogue: additional material for the original webtoon after its main conclusion.
- Ragnarok: a later story about Jin-woo’s son, published as a web novel spin-off by Kakao’s description and as a comic sequel by Yen Press/Ize Press.
Comic publication and editions
The Yen Press/Ize Press catalog lists Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, Vol. 1 (comic) as a 312-page volume with an Older Teen rating. The catalog lists a July 21, 2026 publication date, digital identifier 9798400904783 and print identifier 9798400904776. Because the current date is October 2026, that listed release date has passed, but retailer stock and regional availability can still change.
The catalog credits Daul as original author, JIN of REDICE STUDIO as artist and Brix of REDICE STUDIO as adapter for this comic edition. Those credits are edition-specific; they should not automatically be applied to every web-novel or platform release.
Tappytoon also carries a licensed comic-series page. A print volume and a digital serialization are access formats for the same connected Ragnarok project, not rival sequels. Page counts, release timing, language availability and retailer listings may differ by territory, so check the current listing for your region before buying.
Best Value
How popular are the two works?
Kakao Entertainment reported that the original Solo Leveling webtoon had accumulated 14.3 billion worldwide views in 2023. That figure applies to the original webtoon, not Ragnarok.
In a January 12, 2024 article, Kakao reported “over 50 million” views for the Ragnarok spin-off web novel. The wording is a publisher-reported threshold, not a precise current total, and it describes the web novel rather than the comic volume.
These numbers should not be ranked as a direct performance comparison. They come from different years, refer to different works and use different publication contexts. The original’s 14.3 billion figure also reflects a much longer-established title and should not be read as a Ragnarok-only measurement.

Confirmed by the available publisher descriptions
- Ragnarok follows Sung Soo-ho, the son of Sung Jin-woo.
- Yen Press/Ize Press markets the English comic as a sequel.
- Kakao Entertainment describes the web novel as a spin-off.
- The story takes place years after the original conclusion.
- Soo-ho’s parents are missing, and that disappearance is tied to the story’s central mystery.
- Soo-ho’s visions become identifiable memories, and a near-death crisis awakens dormant abilities and knowledge.
- A monster outbreak at Soo-ho’s college leads to a system notification that he has become a Player.
Not established by those descriptions alone
- A formal, comprehensive canon policy covering every adaptation and side story.
- A complete explanation of Jin-woo’s whereabouts or the parents’ disappearance.
- A requirement to finish every original side story before reading Ragnarok.
- A scene-by-scene account of how each original epilogue event leads into Ragnarok.
- A current, unified view total for all Ragnarok formats.
Keeping those boundaries clear prevents two common errors: treating marketing labels as a detailed canon ruling, and treating a short publisher synopsis as if it revealed later plot resolutions.
Bottom line: is it really a sequel?
Solo Leveling: Ragnarok is the franchise’s direct next-generation continuation. Yen Press and Ize Press call the comic a sequel; Kakao Entertainment calls the web novel a spin-off. Both point to the same core connection: Sung Soo-ho is Sung Jin-woo’s son, and the new story follows Soo-ho as missing parents, awakened memories and inherited powers pull him into the unresolved danger surrounding his family.
Read the original first for the strongest context, consider the original webtoon’s side stories and epilogue as optional additional background, and approach Ragnarok as a new protagonist’s story rather than a duplicate Jin-woo campaign.
