Spoilers for the completed core story, its epilogue material, and later licensed franchise descriptions. Sung Jinwoo begins Solo Leveling as a hunter considered humanity’s weakest. After a deadly dungeon encounter, a mysterious System chooses him as its sole player, allowing him to keep leveling when ordinary hunters cannot. His private struggle for survival grows into a war between the Rulers and Monarchs. At the core story’s ending, Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation to turn time back to before the gates appeared, then continues fighting in the dimensional gap rather than returning to an uncomplicated normal life. The comic’s later catalog entries are labeled side stories, while Tappytoon identifies an epilogue as available.
What is Solo Leveling about?
The setting is a modern Earth where gates connect the human world to another dimension. Monsters emerge from those gates, and people who awaken supernatural abilities become hunters responsible for clearing the resulting dungeons. Hunter ranks determine what an individual can safely fight, leaving low-ranked hunters with dangerous work and little hope of changing their position.

Sung Jinwoo is widely regarded as the weakest of them. He survives by accepting raids that stronger hunters consider routine, even though a single mistake can kill him. The opening premise is therefore not simply “a weak hero becomes strong.” It is a story about a person trapped in a system that appears to measure his limits permanently.
A disastrous dungeon encounter leaves Jinwoo close to death. At that point, a mysterious System selects him as its sole player. Unlike an ordinary awakened hunter, he receives game-like objectives and the ability to increase his power continuously. The exception is the engine of the entire plot: every later victory is connected to the fact that Jinwoo can keep improving while everyone else is largely fixed at the level they awakened with.

Aniplex producer Sota Furuhashi described the premise’s appeal as “the emotional release of the lowest-ranked hunter gaining the power to level up and take down enemies that were previously out of his league.” That comment explains why the early dungeon progression is so satisfying, but it is not a statement from Chugong about the intended meaning of the finale.
How the System changes Jinwoo’s story
The System gives Jinwoo a practical route out of the role assigned to him by the hunter hierarchy. He is still exposed to the same gates and monsters as other hunters, but his victories produce further growth instead of merely ending one raid. The result is a compounding advantage: an enemy that was impossible to defeat becomes a challenge he can eventually overcome, and that victory opens access to an even greater challenge.
This structure also keeps the story personal at first. Jinwoo is not initially trying to command a world war or solve the origin of the gates. He is trying to survive the next dungeon and understand the rules imposed on him. The game-like interface provides measurable progress, while the danger of each raid supplies the cost of failure.

As Jinwoo’s strength rises, the System stops being only a tool for dungeon survival. His power places him at the center of forces operating on a scale larger than human hunter organizations. The central question changes from whether Jinwoo can defeat the next monster to what his growth means in the conflict between the Rulers and Monarchs.
How the story expands into the Monarch war
The ordinary dungeon framework is the entry point, not the final scope. Jinwoo’s continued leveling draws him into the larger conflict that has been moving through the world behind the gates. The Monarchs’ attack on Earth turns a sequence of raids into a war involving humanity’s survival and the balance between opposing supernatural powers.

This escalation matters when interpreting the ending. Jinwoo is not using the Cup of Reincarnation to undo one bad mission or repair a single personal tragedy. The decision follows a war whose consequences reach the whole planet. The reset is therefore a strategic choice made after the conflict has reached its decisive stage.
The official synopsis for Solo Leveling: KARMA describes the final turn in these terms: after the Monarchs’ attack on Earth, Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation and goes back to before the gates appeared. That summary is a concise account of the core ending, but the game’s later story material should not be treated as a replacement for the original novel or webtoon text.
What happens at the end of Solo Leveling?
Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation
After the war, Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation. Its function in the ending is to turn back time to a point before the gates appeared on Earth. This is the event commonly meant when readers ask, “Does Jinwoo go back in time?” The answer is yes, but the purpose and consequences are more important than the simple fact of chronological reversal.
The timeline is moved back before the gates
Returning to the pre-gate period changes the conditions under which humanity experienced the crisis. The public history built around gates and dungeon raids is no longer allowed to unfold in the same way. Jinwoo’s choice is not presented as an ordinary reset button that gives him a peaceful life for free; it is a deliberate attempt to prevent the catastrophe from occurring on the same timeline.
The war does not simply disappear
The reset carries a continuing obligation. The official licensed description says Jinwoo keeps fighting in the dimensional gap after turning back time. In other words, he does not erase every consequence and then retire into an untouched everyday existence. He moves the battlefield away from Earth and continues the conflict there.

That detail resolves a common misunderstanding about the finale. The ending is neither “everyone forgets everything and Jinwoo lives normally” nor “the entire war is invalidated.” Jinwoo accepts the burden of continuing the fight so that the altered timeline can avoid the same destruction. The world’s apparent peace is connected to his decision to keep working in a place outside ordinary human life.

What does the reset mean for Jinwoo?
The Cup of Reincarnation gives Jinwoo a way to change history, but it does not turn his journey into a conventional happily-ever-after. His defining choice is sacrificial in a practical sense: he uses the reset to protect Earth while taking responsibility for the conflict that remains in the dimensional gap.
The ending also completes the story’s movement from individual survival to guardianship. Jinwoo began by trying to live through raids that stronger hunters could ignore. By the finale, he has enough power to make a decision affecting the entire planet, and he chooses the option that leaves him with continuing work rather than an easy public victory.
Readers should be careful not to infer more than the official descriptions establish. The available publisher and licensed summaries explain the reset and the continuing dimensional-gap battle, but they do not provide a chapter-by-chapter comparison of every scene in the original novel and webtoon finales. Claims that the two versions are identical in every detail, or that they resolve particular scenes differently, require direct textual evidence beyond those catalog descriptions.
Where the epilogue and side stories fit
The core ending and the material published afterward should be labeled separately. Yen Press lists the main English comic through volume 13, then identifies volumes 14 and 15 as “Side Stories 1” and “Side Stories 2.” Tappytoon’s official comic page labels the epilogue as available. These labels indicate that the post-core material is an extension of the completed run, not a reason to move the Cup of Reincarnation ending later in the chronology.

| Publication listing | How it is identified | What that means for the ending |
|---|---|---|
| Yen Press comic series | Volumes 1–13 are the main comic listing; volumes 14 and 15 are “Side Stories 1” and “Side Stories 2” | The core run is followed by separately labeled side-story volumes |
| Tappytoon official comic | The page identifies the epilogue as available | Epilogue material is presented after the core story |
| Publisher description for later volumes | Introduces Sooho, the son of Jinwoo and Haein | Later material moves beyond the original core ending and follows the next generation |
Sooho’s introduction is especially useful for chronology. It shows that the franchise can continue exploring the world after Jinwoo’s central conflict without changing what happened at the end of the core story. Readers who want only the original rise, war, and reset can stop with that ending; readers who want additional consequences and family-era material can continue into the labeled side stories and epilogue.
Novel, webtoon, comic and anime: which ending are you reading?
Solo Leveling exists in several formats with different publication histories. The source began as a Korean web novel and later became a popular webtoon. English readers may encounter the prose series through Yen Press’s novel listings and the illustrated version through its comic listings. The anime is an adaptation rather than a separate original conclusion.
| Format | Credits or catalog information | How to use it when discussing the ending |
|---|---|---|
| Original web novel | Original story by Chugong | The prose source for the central story |
| Webtoon/comic | Illustration by DUBU of REDICE STUDIO; h-goon credited for screenplay or adaptation in English listings | The completed illustrated adaptation, with later volumes cataloged as side stories |
| English novel edition | Yen Press lists an eight-novel collection/omnibus | A prose reading route for the full source story |
| English comic edition | Yen Press lists the comic volumes | An illustrated route through the core run and separately labeled later material |
| Anime | Co-produced by Aniplex and Crunchyroll; animated by A-1 Pictures | An adaptation whose production choices should not automatically be treated as changes to the source ending |
The anime’s producers said they aimed to follow the webtoon closely while adding more psychological depth for other characters. The reason given was structural: the source’s compact, protagonist-focused chapters could feel repetitive if transferred directly to television. Added scenes and character emphasis are therefore adaptation decisions. They are not evidence, by themselves, that the Cup of Reincarnation or the dimensional-gap mission has been rewritten.
The creators are also credited differently across editions. Chugong is credited with the original story; DUBU of REDICE STUDIO is associated with the webtoon’s illustration; and h-goon is credited with screenplay or adaptation. Yen Press’s listings identify Chugong as author of both English series, DUBU as the novel artist, and DISCIPLES of REDICE STUDIO as the comic artist, with h-goon as adapter. Those distinctions matter when a discussion switches from the novel to the comic or anime.

Why some characters have different names
Localization can change names without changing the underlying character. The Japanese webtoon version used the name Shun Mizushino, while overseas releases use Sung Jinwoo. This explanation uses Jinwoo because that is the name used in the English-language material discussed here. When comparing editions, identify the release first so a naming difference is not mistaken for a different person or plotline.

What is Solo Leveling: KARMA in relation to the ending?
Netmarble’s official Solo Leveling: KARMA story synopsis frames the dimensional-gap conflict after the reset as material explored in that game. That makes it relevant to the franchise’s expanded chronology, but it does not make every game event part of the original novel’s ending.
The safest distinction is:
- Core ending: Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation, returns to before the gates appeared, and continues fighting in the dimensional gap.
- Later licensed material: official games and post-core publications revisit the period, add perspectives or characters, and extend the setting.
- Continuity caution: a licensed synopsis can establish that a period is being explored without proving that all of its events occurred in the original source text.
This boundary prevents two opposite errors: treating later franchise material as irrelevant when it clearly expands the aftermath, or presenting a game’s plot as if it were a scene-by-scene substitute for the original novel or webtoon.
Where to read after the ending
Choose the edition according to how you want to experience the story:
- For prose: follow the Yen Press novel series, which lists the eight-novel collection/omnibus.
- For sequential art: use the Yen Press comic listings for the main volumes and the separately identified side stories.
- For digital comic reading: the official Tappytoon page identifies the epilogue’s availability.
Those are publisher and platform catalog references, not statements about current retailer inventory, prices or regional release schedules. Availability can vary by territory and format, so check the linked listing for the edition you actually want.
What the ending ultimately resolves
Jinwoo’s arc resolves the question posed by the opening: can the hunter who is treated as powerless become strong enough to determine humanity’s fate? The System answers that question through his growth, but the finale gives the power a cost. Winning does not mean returning to the life he had before the first dungeon. It means choosing a timeline in which Earth is spared the same catastrophe and accepting a continuing fight beyond it.
The completed core story therefore ends with three linked facts: the Cup of Reincarnation moves history back before the gates, Jinwoo remains active in the dimensional gap, and later comic or game material must be labeled as epilogue, side story or licensed expansion rather than folded indistinctly into the original ending.
