If you searched for “FNaF 9 crashing,” you probably mean Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach. “FNaF 9” is an informal shorthand—not the game’s official Steam title.
For the Windows PC version, start with the low-risk fixes: restart Steam and Windows, verify the game files, remove mods and overlays, and update or roll back your graphics driver. If the game still will not launch, check antivirus quarantine and reset the game’s configuration after backing up your saves.

Try these fixes first
- Exit Security Breach and Steam, choose Steam > Exit, restart Windows, then try again.
- Verify the game files in Steam.
- Remove mods, injected DLLs, ReShade files, and custom launch options.
- Disable overlays and recording tools.
- Update or roll back the graphics driver from Nvidia, AMD, or Intel.
These steps repair the most common causes without immediately risking save data or reinstalling the game.
Check whether your PC meets the published requirements
Steam lists these PC requirements:

These are store-listed compatibility targets, not a guarantee of smooth or crash-free performance. Minimum hardware may struggle at higher resolutions and settings.
- Confirm 64-bit Windows under Settings > System > About > System type.
- Check memory and graphics hardware in Task Manager > Performance.
- Keep more than 80 GB free where possible; Windows, shader caches, updates, and virtual memory also need space.
- If you have integrated and dedicated graphics, confirm that Steam and Security Breach use the dedicated GPU.
Fix Security Breach that briefly says “Running” and returns to “Play”
1. Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, restart Steam, and launch the game.
Steam should download or replace missing and damaged files. Verification normally does not delete your saves, but back them up before performing later configuration work.
If Steam repeatedly redownloads the same files, check free space, remove mods, look for drive errors, and consider moving the installation to a healthy library drive.
2. Remove mods and third-party files
If the game stopped working after a mod, mod loader, ReShade installation, or injected DLL was added, treat that change as the leading suspect. Disable or uninstall the mod, remove third-party files according to the mod’s own instructions, then verify the installation again.
Do not delete saves immediately. A modded save may not load correctly in a clean installation, so preserve a backup first.

3. Disable overlays
Temporarily disable the Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, Nvidia or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, capture software, RGB utilities, and monitoring tools. Test the game, then re-enable these programs one at a time if it launches. This identifies a conflict without requiring every utility to remain disabled permanently.

Update or roll back the GPU driver
Download drivers directly from the manufacturer, not from a generic driver-updater utility:
Install the correct Windows driver, restart the PC, and test Security Breach before reinstalling overlays or tuning tools. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, trying the previous stable driver can be more useful than repeatedly installing the newest one.
Check Windows and runtime components
Install pending Windows updates and restart. Confirm that the GPU is enabled in Device Manager and that Windows Security has not quarantined a game executable.
If Windows reports a missing or damaged runtime, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation and downloads. Never download individual DLL files from unofficial websites.

Check antivirus quarantine
- Open Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for a blocked or quarantined file belonging to the legitimate Steam installation.
Restore a file only when you have confirmed that it belongs to Security Breach. Adding the game folder as an antivirus exclusion can be a temporary diagnostic step, but exclusions reduce protection and are not a universal fix.

Reset display configuration
A damaged fullscreen or graphics configuration can cause a black screen before the menu appears. After backing up your data, rename the relevant configuration folder so the game generates fresh settings. Once the game opens, begin at 1080p with a lower preset and raise settings gradually.
Do not blindly force DirectX 11 with a launch command. Steam lists DirectX 12 for this game, and an undocumented or copied launch option may create another failure rather than fix the original one.
Fix crashes during gameplay
Random crashes, severe stutter, and crashes after loading a large area can indicate GPU driver instability, overheating, memory pressure, background applications, or game-side instability.
- Start at 1080p and use a lower graphics preset.
- Reduce shadows, effects, foliage, view distance, and post-processing.
- Disable ray tracing if it is available in your installation.
- Cap the frame rate.
- Close browsers, video editors, launchers, and other memory-heavy programs.
- Monitor GPU temperature, CPU temperature, RAM use, and VRAM use.
- Return CPU, GPU, and RAM overclocks or undervolts to stock settings.
Do not assume every long pause is a crash. Shader compilation and asset streaming can cause temporary stutter, particularly on an initial launch. Check Task Manager, disk activity, and whether the process is still responding before terminating it.
If the game crashes only while loading one save
A crash affecting one save points more toward damaged save data, a mission- or area-specific bug, a modded save, or a corrupted asset than a general hardware failure.
- Back up the save folder before changing anything.
- Start a new game and test whether it reaches gameplay.
- If a new game works, investigate the affected save and any mod that created it.
- Do not immediately reinstall Windows or replace hardware.

Use this only after verification, driver troubleshooting, and clean-launch testing have failed.

- Close Security Breach and Steam.
- Back up the save and configuration folders.
- Rename the relevant folder instead of deleting it.
- Launch the game and let it create fresh settings.
- If the game works, restore files individually to identify damaged data.

Reinstall only after the earlier steps. It is reasonable when Steam verification repeatedly fails, the installation contains old injected files, installation was interrupted, configuration reset did not help, or the drive may be damaged.
Before uninstalling:
- Back up saves.
- Record installed mods.
- Check what Steam Cloud currently contains.
- Confirm that the target drive has sufficient free space and is not reporting errors.
Reinstalling to the same failing drive or immediately restoring the same broken configuration can reproduce the crash.

Include your Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, crash timing, error message, whether a new game works, whether mods were installed, and what file verification reported. If the computer is below the published minimum requirements, software tweaks cannot reliably compensate for the hardware shortfall.
