EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION is a symptom, not proof that your RAM is bad. It means a game attempted to read or write memory it was not allowed to use. The trigger may be corrupted game files, mods, overlays, a graphics-driver problem, unstable XMP/EXPO or overclock settings, Windows corruption, storage errors, or failing hardware.
Start with the safest tests: restart Windows, launch the game without mods or overlays, verify its files, and return CPU, GPU, and RAM settings to stock. If only one game crashes, investigate that game first. If several unrelated games crash, investigate drivers, memory stability, temperatures, storage, and Windows.

What “reading address” means
The message means the game tried to read data from an invalid, inaccessible, or no-longer-valid memory location. The hexadecimal value after reading address is mainly useful for developers and crash-log correlation; it normally does not identify a defective RAM stick.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn address such as 0x0000000000000000 often corresponds to a null or missing reference, but it does not prove one particular cause. A changing address across crashes can be consistent with broad instability, corrupted data, or an external software conflict. A crash that repeats at exactly the same loading screen, save, map, or cutscene can point toward a damaged asset, configuration file, shader, mod, or game-specific bug. These are clues, not definitive rules.

First determine whether the problem is local or system-wide
| Pattern | Best first checks | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Only one game crashes | Verify files, remove mods, reset configuration, disable overlays | Game files, a mod, configuration, patch, or game-specific bug |
| Several unrelated games crash | Return BIOS settings to stock, test the GPU driver and RAM, check temperatures | System instability, driver, Windows, storage, or hardware problem |
| Crashes began after a driver update | Roll back and test the previous stable driver | Driver regression or installation conflict |
| Crashes began after a game patch | Verify files, remove mods, check the developer’s support channels | Patch incompatibility or changed game assets |
| Only happens with overlays or monitoring tools | Disable injected software one item at a time | Hook or overlay conflict |
| Blue screens, artifacts, black screens, or restarts also occur | Check temperatures, stock settings, memory, storage, and logs | Hardware, power, thermal, or driver failure is more likely |
Do not change every setting at once. Record the game, launcher, GPU, driver version, Windows build, active mods, and exact crash location. Change one variable, reproduce the same scenario, and record whether the crash frequency changes.
Fast, low-risk fixes in the right order
- Restart Windows. Use Restart, not merely closing and reopening the game.
- Remove modifications temporarily. Disable mods, ReShade, ENB, custom DLLs, injectors, and custom launch arguments. Do not delete saves before backing them up.
- Disable overlays and monitoring tools. Test without Steam Overlay, Discord overlay, NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay, AMD Adrenalin overlay, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, OBS game capture, Overwolf, Medal, FPS counters, RGB utilities, audio enhancers, and peripheral software. These tools are not universally faulty, but injected components can conflict with some games or anti-cheat systems.
- Reset graphics settings. Try borderless windowed mode. Temporarily disable HDR, ray tracing, frame generation, high-resolution texture packs, and aggressive upscaling settings. Remove custom launch options.
- Test a new save, profile, map, or game mode. If only one save or location crashes, the save, streamed asset, or local configuration may be damaged.
- Check free space. Ensure both the Windows drive and game drive have usable free space.
- Return the system to stock settings. Temporarily disable CPU and GPU overclocks, undervolts, GPU VRAM overclocks, XMP, EXPO, DOCP, manual memory timings, and motherboard enhancement features.
Verify the game installation
Steam
In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam recommends verification when extracted or installed files may be corrupted. Its troubleshooting guidance also recommends restarting, updating Windows and drivers, disabling nonessential software, and checking system requirements.
Verification may restore files quarantined by antivirus software, but it may not remove old mods, manually installed DLLs, ReShade files, or damaged configuration folders. Steam games may also depend on secondary installers such as DirectX, PhysX, Visual C++ components, or Windows updates.
Other launchers
- Epic Games Launcher: usually Manage → Verify.
- Battle.net: Scan and Repair.
- EA app: Repair.
- Ubisoft Connect: Verify files.
- Xbox app or Microsoft Store: Verify and Repair or Repair, where available.
Launcher labels can change. Use the current repair or verification option for the installed game.
Before renaming or deleting folders in Documents, %AppData%, or %LocalAppData%, back up saves and settings. Cloud synchronization can restore a bad configuration or save, so test with a local backup where relevant. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection; if a legitimate file was quarantined, verify it first and use only a narrowly scoped exception when necessary.
Update or roll back the graphics driver
- Identify the exact GPU model and Windows edition.
- Download the driver from the manufacturer’s official site: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Restart after installation.
- If the crashes began immediately after an update, test the previous stable driver instead of assuming the newest version is best.
On laptops, check the laptop manufacturer’s support page as well. Hybrid-graphics systems can require OEM-specific packages. Use a clean-install or factory-reset option only when a normal reinstall or rollback does not resolve the issue. AMD’s Adrenalin installer currently offers default, minimal, driver-only, and optional factory-reset paths, although choices vary by GPU and software version. Avoid random “driver updater” utilities.
Disable XMP, EXPO, and overclocks
Gaming can expose marginal instability that does not appear during browsing or office work. A memory profile is not inherently defective, but XMP, EXPO, or DOCP can be unstable on a particular combination of CPU, motherboard, BIOS version, memory kit, and voltage settings.

Enter the motherboard firmware, load optimized or default settings, and temporarily disable memory profiles and manual CPU or GPU tuning. Test the game at stock settings. If the crashes stop, re-enable one setting at a time and test again. Do not continue overclocking while diagnosing unexplained access violations.
Repair Windows components
Windows corruption is not the most likely explanation for a single game crash, but it becomes relevant when multiple applications fail or Windows shows other integrity problems. Install pending Windows updates and restart. Then open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
After DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can provide the files needed to repair corrupted Windows components. If SFC reports that no integrity violations were found, it found no protected-file corruption. If it repaired files, restart and retest. If it could not repair some files, check Windows Update and repeat the process; broader symptoms may justify Safe Mode or an in-place Windows repair.
Do not delete system DLLs or download replacement DLLs from third-party sites.
Check the page file and virtual memory
The page file is Windows-managed virtual memory; it is not the same as physical RAM. Open System Properties → Advanced → Performance Settings → Advanced → Virtual memory. Prefer Automatically manage paging file size for all drives or a System managed size on a healthy Windows drive.
Make sure the drive is not nearly full and is not reporting errors, then reboot after changing the setting. Increasing the page file is not a general fix for an access violation. A disabled or undersized page file can aggravate memory-pressure problems, but it cannot repair a buggy game, faulty RAM, or broken driver.
Check storage, temperatures, and Windows logs
- Use the SSD or hard-drive manufacturer’s official health utility.
- Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures, clocks, power limits, and throttling while reproducing the crash.
- Open Reliability Monitor to see whether application failures began at a specific date.
- Open Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System and look for
WHEA-Logger, disk or NTFS errors, display-driver resets, and unexpected shutdowns.
Logs show useful correlations but do not always identify the root cause. Use chkdsk only when storage errors justify it. For example, chkdsk /f C: can repair file-system errors and may require a restart. Follow the manufacturer’s storage guidance before using more aggressive options.

Test RAM and other hardware
Run deeper hardware tests after the reversible software checks:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Use Windows Memory Diagnostic for an initial check.
- Use MemTest86 or another bootable memory tester for a longer, more sensitive test.
- If errors appear, test individual memory modules and different motherboard slots.
- Run CPU and GPU stability tests separately. A single combined stress test is not definitive.
- Watch for GPU artifacts, driver timeouts, black screens, audio looping, spontaneous restarts, and blue screens.
A clean memory test does not prove that the GPU, motherboard, power supply, or storage is healthy. Conversely, a game crash does not prove RAM failure. Errors at stock settings across multiple tests and applications justify hardware diagnosis or warranty support.
When the game developer is the right support channel
Contact the developer or publisher when only one title crashes, the problem began after a patch, the crash is reproducible at one location or cutscene, or other games and stress tests remain stable. Include the game version, launcher, Windows build, GPU and driver version, crash logs, exact reproduction steps, save or map details, and a list of removed mods and overlays.
An engine-specific, anti-cheat-related, or mod-configuration failure may require a game-side fix. Do not buy RAM, a GPU, a registry cleaner, or a paid “repair” utility merely because the message contains the word memory.
Diagnostic matrix
| Symptom | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| Crash during shader compilation | Clear the shader cache, update or roll back the driver, and reduce graphics settings. |
| Crash after 10–30 minutes | Monitor temperatures, return to stock, and test RAM and GPU stability. |
| Crash only with overlays enabled | Disable overlays one by one to identify the conflicting component. |
| Crash at one save or location | Test a new save or profile and verify the installation. |
| Changing address values | Test broad system stability rather than treating the address as a RAM identifier. |
| Same address and location every time | Reproduce with clean files and no mods; a deterministic software or asset bug becomes more likely. |
| Blue screens, artifacts, or restarts | Perform hardware, temperature, storage, and driver checks promptly. |
Do you need to replace hardware?
Hardware replacement should be the final conclusion, not the first reaction. It becomes reasonable when several unrelated games fail, Windows also blue-screens or restarts, memory tests report errors at stock settings, GPU artifacts or driver resets occur, storage diagnostics report problems, or the crash persists after a clean software test on a fresh installation.

Should I update or roll back my GPU driver?
Update from the manufacturer when the driver is old or unrelated to the problem. If crashes began immediately after an update, test the previous stable driver instead.
Can Discord or Steam Overlay cause this crash?
They can conflict with some games or anti-cheat systems, but they are not universally responsible. Disable overlays one at a time and reproduce the same crash scenario.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I increase the page file?
Usually no. Leave it system-managed on a healthy drive. A page file can help memory pressure, but it cannot fix invalid program access, defective RAM, or a broken driver.
Why does the crash stop when XMP or EXPO is disabled?
The memory profile may be unstable with your particular CPU, motherboard, BIOS, memory kit, or voltage settings. Re-enable it only after testing, one setting at a time.
Do I need to reinstall Windows?
Not for a single-game crash. Consider an in-place repair only when DISM/SFC cannot repair broader Windows problems or multiple applications fail after software and hardware checks.
Should I buy more RAM?
Not based on this error alone. Check memory usage and test existing RAM first; replacement is justified only when diagnostics establish a capacity or hardware problem.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: treat EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION as a clue, not a diagnosis. One-game crashes usually begin with files, mods, settings, overlays, and patches; multi-game crashes justify stock-setting, driver, Windows, storage, temperature, and hardware testing. Replace components only after repeatable diagnostics point to a fault.
