[Solved] How to Lock Your Cursor to the Main Display While Gaming Fullscreen

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To lock your cursor to the gaming monitor, set the game to Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen first. If the pointer still escapes, configure Dual Monitor Tools to use Lock cursor onto screen. For automatic locking when a particular game has focus, use AutoCursorLock.

Use exclusive fullscreen first; use a cursor-lock utility if the pointer still escapes

If your mouse moves from a fullscreen game onto a second monitor, try the game’s Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen mode first. Do not assume that Borderless Fullscreen will confine the pointer: it often behaves more like a maximized window.

If the cursor still crosses displays, the most reliable general fix is Dual Monitor Tools cursor lock. Configure its Lock cursor onto screen function, assign a release or toggle hotkey, place the pointer on the gaming monitor, and activate the lock. For automatic per-game behavior, use a focus-aware tool such as AutoCursorLock.

What Windows’ “main display” actually controls

Windows calls the chosen primary monitor the main display. You can select it under Settings > System > Display by selecting a monitor and enabling Make this my main display. The same screen lets you identify and rearrange monitors so Windows’ virtual layout matches their physical positions.

Making a monitor primary affects where Windows places some windows and system interface elements. It does not guarantee that every game will keep its cursor on that display. A game can still allow the pointer to cross onto another monitor, particularly when it uses windowed or borderless rendering.

Windows’ Win + P menu provides four display modes: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only. These modes determine which displays are active, but they are not the same as a game-specific cursor lock. Microsoft’s multi-monitor guidance covers these settings and modes in more detail: Microsoft’s Windows multi-monitor documentation.

Fix it in the game first

  1. Open the game’s Settings, Options, or Video menu.
  2. Set Display Mode or Window Mode to Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen, if available.
  3. Apply the change and restart the game if it does not take effect immediately.
  4. Move the mouse around the edges of the game screen and test whether it can reach the other monitor.

Exclusive fullscreen may confine the cursor when the game implements its input and window handling correctly. It is a useful first test, not a universal solution. Some newer games offer only borderless or windowed modes, and some games still release the pointer when you open an overlay, use a menu, or change focus.

If the problem began after enabling an overlay, temporarily disable overlays and mouse-related utilities from services such as your game launcher, graphics software, chat client, or peripheral software. Test the game again before adding a separate cursor-lock program.

Best general solution: Dual Monitor Tools

Dual Monitor Tools is a free Windows utility with cursor-management features for multi-monitor systems. Its cursor settings include Lock cursor onto screen, which confines the pointer to the current monitor. The official documentation also describes configurable hotkeys, cursor movement, and sticky-edge behavior.

Configure a manual monitor lock

  1. Download and start Dual Monitor Tools before launching the game.
  2. Open its cursor settings or Cursor section.
  3. Find Lock cursor onto screen.
  4. Assign an easy-to-reach toggle or release hotkey.
  5. Place the pointer on the monitor used for gaming.
  6. Activate the lock, then launch or return to the game.

Keep the release shortcut available. Use it before switching to the desktop, working on the second monitor, or troubleshooting the game. If the lock seems to trap you, use the configured release key first; if necessary, use Alt + Tab and close the utility from Windows.

The official cursor documentation is available at Dual Monitor Tools’ cursor settings page.

Automatic per-game locking: AutoCursorLock

A manual monitor lock is useful when you play different games or want to decide when the boundary is active. If you want the lock to follow one particular game, AutoCursorLock is a more targeted option. Its project documentation says it can monitor configured processes, lock the cursor to a selected game window or screen while the process is focused, unlock when you use Alt + Tab, and reapply the lock when the game regains focus.

This focus-aware behavior is useful when the main annoyance is having to toggle the lock every time a game opens or regains focus. Review the project’s current release information and security details before installing any third-party executable. Compatibility can vary by game, Windows release, display arrangement, permissions, and anti-cheat software; no cursor-lock utility should be assumed to work with every title.

AutoCursorLock’s source and project information are available on its GitHub repository.

What these tools can—and cannot—do

A cursor-lock utility normally creates a desktop boundary for the visible Windows pointer. It does not create separate mouse devices or allow two simultaneously active applications to receive independent mouse input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters because some games use raw mouse input, hide the normal pointer, or constantly recenter the cursor. The game may continue responding to mouse movement even when the visible pointer is confined to the gaming monitor. Conversely, a game that loses focus after a click on the second display may be fixed by the desktop boundary, because the click can no longer occur outside the game’s monitor.

Third-party utilities can also conflict with overlays, elevated games, or anti-cheat systems. If a game refuses to start, reports an input problem, or behaves differently after installing a cursor-lock tool, disable the utility and check the game’s and utility’s compatibility guidance.

Check the monitor layout before locking the cursor

A monitor lock cannot correct a confusing Windows display arrangement. Open Settings > System > Display, select Identify if necessary, and drag the monitor diagrams until they match the physical positions of your screens.

  • Make sure the intended gaming screen is connected and enabled.
  • Confirm that Windows identifies the gaming monitor as the primary display if that is where you want games and system UI to open.
  • Check whether one monitor is positioned above, below, or diagonally beside the other in Windows’ layout.
  • Test the pointer at the edges after applying the arrangement.

An unusual virtual arrangement can make the cursor cross at an edge you did not expect. Correcting the layout may reduce accidental movement, although it still does not replace an explicit lock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick temporary workaround: turn off the second display

For a fast test, press Win + P and choose PC screen only. With only one active display, the pointer has nowhere else to go. To restore the multi-monitor setup, press Win + P again and choose Extend.

This is effective but disruptive: the second monitor is unavailable while the game is running. It is best used as an isolation test or emergency workaround, not as a replacement for cursor confinement when you need the second screen for chat, guides, monitoring, or streaming.

Alternative: Cursor Lock

SnakeByte Studios’ Cursor Lock is another Windows utility intended to stop a game cursor from drifting onto a second monitor and accidentally defocusing or minimizing the game. Its project page includes Windows 10 and Windows 11 setup guidance, including running the setup shortcut as administrator.

Because the project is older and compatibility varies, treat it as an alternative rather than the first recommendation. Start with the game’s own fullscreen mode, then try Dual Monitor Tools or a focus-aware solution before relying on an older utility for a particular game.

Developer option: Windows’ ClipCursor function

Developers can implement a cursor boundary with the Win32 ClipCursor function. Passing a rectangle confines subsequent mouse or programmatic pointer movement to that screen region; passing NULL releases the restriction. Microsoft specifically notes that an application controlling the shared cursor should release the restriction before relinquishing control.

A simple rectangle can represent one monitor, but a multi-monitor desktop with unusual positioning may require more careful boundary logic. A robust implementation also needs to detect when the game loses focus and release the clip during Alt + Tab, application exit, errors, and other handoff cases. More complex exclusion shapes may require mouse-hook logic rather than one rectangular ClipCursor region.

Refer to Microsoft’s ClipCursor API documentation. This is a programming interface, not a normal Windows setting for players.

Troubleshooting order

  1. Confirm the target display: In Settings > System > Display, select the gaming monitor and check the primary-display setting.
  2. Correct the layout: Make the monitor arrangement in Windows match the physical arrangement.
  3. Test exclusive fullscreen: Prefer Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen over borderless fullscreen where the game offers the choice.
  4. Check overlays: Temporarily disable overlays and applications that modify input, windows, or display behavior.
  5. Use a manual lock: Configure Dual Monitor Tools’ Lock cursor onto screen and test its hotkey.
  6. Use per-game automation: Configure AutoCursorLock if you need locking when a specific process has focus and unlocking during Alt+Tab.
  7. Inspect the game’s own settings: Look for mouse, controller, accessibility, or “force unlocked cursor” options. Some games intentionally release the pointer in menus.
  8. Try one display: Use Win + P > PC screen only to determine whether the second monitor is involved.

When the problem is probably not a cursor-boundary problem

If the cursor escapes in every application—not only one game—check for broader mouse, display, or driver symptoms. Examples include pointer freezing, monitor disconnects, flickering, incorrect resolutions, USB device dropouts, or system instability. Those symptoms justify general Windows and hardware troubleshooting.

Driver maintenance may be relevant in that broader situation, but a driver updater is not a substitute for cursor confinement. Ordinary fullscreen cursor escape is usually caused by the game’s window mode or input behavior, not by an automatically “outdated” driver. Also check the game’s own support page and the current compatibility information for any utility before changing drivers or running software with elevated permissions.

Why a mouse, monitor, or cable will not directly solve it

This issue is controlled by Windows’ display boundary and the game’s window/input handling. Replacing a mouse, monitor, HDMI cable, or controller does not normally add a cursor lock. Hardware troubleshooting is appropriate if the device is malfunctioning, but buying a different gaming accessory is not the direct fix for a pointer that is allowed to cross an extended desktop.

Recommended setup

For most players, use exclusive fullscreen if the game supports it. If the cursor still escapes, configure Dual Monitor Tools with a clearly remembered release hotkey. If you want the behavior tied automatically to one game, configure AutoCursorLock and verify that Alt+Tab releases the boundary correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does making a monitor the primary display lock the cursor there?

No. In Windows, the main display is the primary monitor, but games control their own window and input behavior. A game can still let the pointer cross to another monitor, especially in borderless or windowed modes.

What is the easiest way to keep my mouse on one monitor while gaming?

Try the game’s Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen mode first. If that does not work, use Dual Monitor Tools and enable Lock cursor onto screen, or configure AutoCursorLock to lock the pointer while a specific game has focus.

Will a cursor-lock utility stop the game from receiving mouse input?

Yes, but the lock is normally a desktop pointer boundary. It does not provide separate mouse input to two active applications, and games using raw input or their own cursor-recentering behavior may respond differently.

How can I temporarily stop the cursor crossing monitors without installing software?

Press Win + P and select PC screen only. This disables the other active display, so the pointer cannot enter it. Select Extend later to restore the multi-monitor desktop.

The Bottom Line

Best order: set the correct primary display and monitor layout, test exclusive fullscreen, then use Dual Monitor Tools for a manual lock or AutoCursorLock for per-game focus-aware locking. Use Win + P > PC screen only only as a temporary workaround.
