A black preview in OBS Studio usually means Game Capture could not hook the game’s renderer. Close and reopen both programs, verify the Game Capture target, align OBS and the game on the same GPU, then remove overlay conflicts. If the title blocks hooking, use Window Capture or Display Capture instead. The sequence below covers laptops, multi-GPU PCs, fullscreen games, DX12 problems, and the case where audio works but video is black.
What an OBS Game Capture black screen means
Game Capture is designed to hook a game’s rendering process directly. OBS Project describes it as the most efficient way to add games and recommends trying it first. A completely black source means that hook did not attach, attached to the wrong process, or is being blocked. It is different from a source that is visible but incorrectly sized; that is a transform problem.

The most common causes are straightforward:
- The source is not set to the game that is actually running, or OBS was opened before the game and did not reconnect correctly.
- The game runs with elevated permissions while OBS does not.
- On a laptop or multi-GPU computer, OBS and the game are rendering on different adapters.
- An overlay, frame-rate counter, monitoring utility, security hook, or anti-cheat component interferes with the capture hook.
- The game blocks normal hooking, especially in some fullscreen or protected titles.
- A DX12 implementation is unstable with capture while the game’s DX11 mode works.
- The source has a transform that places the captured image outside the canvas, making it appear missing rather than black.
Fast repair sequence
- Restart both programs. Exit the game and OBS Studio completely. Open the game, then OBS, or reverse that order if the title’s documentation requires it. In the Sources list, confirm the source type is Game Capture and that its target matches the running game. Do not troubleshoot a stale source pointed at another executable.
- Run OBS as administrator when required. Close OBS, right-click its shortcut, select Run as administrator, and reopen the scene. OBS specifically lists Call of Duty, Valorant, Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero among games for which administrator mode may be needed. Use the same elevation level consistently; launching only one program with higher privileges can prevent the hook from attaching.
- Put OBS and the game on the same GPU. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics. Add
C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exeif OBS is not listed. Assign OBS and the game to the same appropriate GPU, then restart both applications. A laptop commonly uses its integrated GPU for the desktop and its discrete GPU for games; Game Capture cannot work when OBS and the game are running on different GPUs. - Close hook conflicts. Temporarily exit overlays, FPS counters, anti-virus hooks, RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS), and MSI Afterburner. Test the preview with those components disabled, then restore them one at a time to identify the conflict. RTSS version 7.3.2 and later has a documented Microsoft Detours compatibility option; enable the relevant compatibility setting if you need RTSS running.
- Test outside exclusive fullscreen. If the image disappears when you press Alt+Tab, start a short recording while the game remains active. For titles that block or lose a fullscreen hook, change the game to windowed or borderless fullscreen and switch the OBS source to Window Capture. OBS cites Destiny 2 and Counter-Strike 2 as examples of games where a fallback may be necessary.
- Try DX11 when DX12 misbehaves. If a DX12 title crashes, produces odd frames, or remains black, select its DX11 mode when the game provides one. Restart the title after changing the rendering API, then test Game Capture again.
- Reset the source geometry. If the source is present in the preview but the image is cropped, tiny, or off-canvas, right-click it and choose Transform → Reset Transform (Ctrl-R). Right-click again and choose Transform → Fit to Screen (Ctrl-F).
Check the Game Capture source itself
Match the capture mode to the running title
Open the Game Capture source properties and make sure its target selection refers to the game process currently running, not a launcher or a previously used executable. If the title has multiple launchers or renderers, close the wrong process before selecting the correct one. A source aimed at a non-running target can stay black even though OBS is otherwise functioning.

Game Capture includes an anti-cheat compatibility hook and capture-method controls. If a protected title is not visible with the default method, test the compatibility hook in the source properties, apply the change, and restart the game before judging the result. Anti-cheat systems can reject ordinary injection; the compatibility option is intended for that class of title, but it is not a guarantee that every game permits capture.

Keep the game visible during the test
Use a brief recording rather than relying only on the preview while rapidly switching windows. Some fullscreen games stop presenting frames when they lose focus, so the preview can look black after Alt+Tab even though Game Capture works while the game is active. Stop the test recording and inspect it before changing several settings at once.
Fix GPU assignment on laptops and multi-GPU PCs
Windows can assign OBS to the integrated adapter while assigning the game to a discrete adapter, or the reverse. Because Game Capture hooks the renderer on the game’s GPU, that mismatch prevents a usable image. In Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add both applications if necessary and select the same GPU preference for each. The OBS executable to add is C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe for a standard installation. Rebooting is not normally required, but both OBS and the game must be closed and reopened after changing the assignment.

GPU rules differ by capture type. Game Capture requires alignment with the game’s rendering adapter. Window Capture and Display Capture can require different choices on a laptop, so do not assume that a setting that fixes one source automatically fixes the others.
When overlays and utilities cause the black screen
Overlays and monitoring tools often use the same interception points as Game Capture. Disable every nonessential overlay for one controlled test: in-game social overlays, frame-rate counters, hardware monitors, RTSS, MSI Afterburner, and security software features that insert a process hook. If the image returns, re-enable items individually. This isolates the conflict without permanently removing software you still need.

For RTSS, OBS documents a Microsoft Detours compatibility option in version 7.3.2 and later. If your RTSS installation is older, update it before testing that option. Do not change several overlay settings between recordings; otherwise you cannot tell which change mattered.

To use Window Capture, switch the game to windowed or borderless fullscreen if necessary, add a Window Capture source, and select the game window. To use Display Capture, add a Display Capture source and choose the monitor. On Windows 10 version 1903 and later, OBS 27 and later documents a Windows capture method for Display Capture. Microsoft’s capture API can draw a yellow border around the captured area; OBS notes that this border is not present in the recording or stream.

Audio and video follow different paths. If game audio reaches OBS while the Game Capture preview is black, treat the symptom as a failed video hook rather than proof that the game source is correct. Work through the restart, administrator, GPU, overlay, and fullscreen checks above, then test Window Capture or Display Capture. Confirm that the visible source is the one selected in the scene and that another source is not covering it. A short recording with the game in focus is the quickest way to distinguish a preview-only problem from a video-capture problem.

Correct a source that is visible but the picture is wrong
A black-looking canvas can actually be an image positioned outside the scene or reduced to an unusable size. Select the source, use Transform → Reset Transform (Ctrl-R), and then Transform → Fit to Screen (Ctrl-F). This resets position, scale, and rotation without changing the game hook. If the source becomes visible after the reset, no GPU or overlay change was required.
Display Capture details for newer Windows systems
Display Capture is the broadest fallback because it records the desktop, but it also captures anything that appears on that display. OBS documents a Windows 10 (1903+) capture method available in OBS 27 and later, with GPU behavior different from Game Capture. If Display Capture is black on a laptop, revisit the graphics assignment for the capture type rather than copying the Game Capture GPU choice blindly. The yellow border generated by Microsoft’s API is a capture indicator only; it does not appear in the saved recording or live stream.
A controlled diagnostic order
- Close OBS and the game, then reopen and verify the Game Capture target.
- Run OBS as administrator for titles that require elevated access.
- Align OBS and the game to the same GPU in Windows Graphics settings.
- Disable overlays, RTSS, MSI Afterburner, FPS counters, and anti-virus hooks for one test.
- Use windowed or borderless mode and test Window Capture if fullscreen hooking fails.
- Switch from DX12 to DX11 when the game offers it and DX12 produces crashes or anomalous frames.
- Reset and fit the source transform if the source exists but is misplaced.
- Use Display Capture as the final compatibility fallback, accepting that it records the whole desktop.
This order changes one class of variable at a time, so you can return to the smallest working configuration and then restore features deliberately.
