Sonic Terror is an announced turn-based tactical RPG about an outlaw rock band touring an alternate 1984 and fighting aliens with music. Despite its riffs-and-drums premise, the official Steam description explicitly says it has no rhythm QTEs or dice rolls: combat is built around tactical turns, aiming and attacks.
What is Sonic Terror?
In Sonic Terror, a totalitarian republic and an alien life form threaten a dystopian version of 1984. You lead the last rock band on tour, with gigs presented as tactical battles. The game’s central conceit is that music is the band’s weapon: drum beats, guitar riffs and basslines become attacks against enemies.
The Steam description calls the game a tactical RPG and describes three musicians whose skills and personalities can develop. It also advertises a handcrafted world, a dynamic storyline, encounters with people on the road and choices about how to respond to them. These are features described for the game, not independently verified final-game behavior.
Is Sonic Terror a rhythm game?
No—not according to the official Steam description. It says: “Pure tactical gameplay without any rhythm QTEs and dice rolls. If it’s aimed, it hurts.” The musical theme shapes the attacks and presentation, but the description frames combat as turn-based tactics rather than a test of rhythm timing.

The soundtrack is also described as reacting to the fight: it grows as the player succeeds and fades when the band is hit. That makes music part of the combat atmosphere as well as its fictional arsenal.
What does the band do between fights?
The tour is not described as combat alone. The Steam listing says players can compose songs from inspiration, manage the musicians’ basic needs, and improve their equipment. Keeping the band fed, alive and not too hungover is part of the management premise, while developing their skills and personalities ties progression to the people in the group.

The result, as advertised, is a mix of tactical encounters and road-trip decisions: build the band, make music, upgrade gear and choose how to deal with people encountered along the way.
When does Sonic Terror come out, and what platforms are planned?
The current Steam listing names Book Burner Games as both developer and publisher, gives the release date as “To be announced,” and says the game is not yet available. The page offers a playtest access request.

January 2026 announcement coverage described a PC release via Steam and unspecified consoles to follow. Gematsu’s January 27 report named Human Qube Games as publisher and Book Burner Games as developer; RPG Site’s January 28 report described a PC (Steam) release without a release window. The current Steam page instead names Book Burner Games as publisher. The available announcements do not explain the difference in publisher attribution or confirm a console release date, so console timing and availability remain unestablished.

Sonic Terror is pitched for players interested in turn-based combat, band management and a music-driven dystopian setting—not as a rhythm game. Its release date is still unannounced, and the currently available information is store and announcement copy rather than a hands-on evaluation.
