What happened to the CrossWorlds open test?
SEGA announced the Open Network Test on August 20, 2025, inviting players on eligible platforms to join. It ran from August 29 through September 2, 2025—not an ongoing or still-upcoming beta. SEGA listed PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Epic Games as eligible platforms. SEGA’s announcement put the event in the past well before the full game’s release.

The full game became available on September 25, 2025, according to SEGA’s investor presentation. The title’s original “isn’t even live yet” phrasing was tied to the pre-test period; it does not describe the game’s status today.
How many players did CrossWorlds reach on Steam?
SteamDB records two separate concurrent-player peaks. The figures refer to Steam only, not all platforms, total players, sales, or average activity.

SteamDB tracks the test and full game under separate app records: Open Network Test statistics and full-game statistics. The test peak occurred after the test had opened; it cannot establish that CrossWorlds was beating another game before the event began.
Did CrossWorlds beat Team Sonic Racing?
The player-count evidence does not verify the headline’s specific claim. It supplies no comparable, dated Team Sonic Racing peak, and neither CrossWorlds figure establishes a pre-opening comparison. The 18,094 figure is the test app’s peak on August 30; the full game’s 13,630 peak came on September 26. Both are post-launch-of-test records, and neither is a count from before August 29.

A fair comparison would need the same platform, metric, time window, and product definition. For example, a Steam concurrent peak for the CrossWorlds test should be compared with a Steam concurrent peak for Team Sonic Racing over a stated period—not with a different platform’s total players, an average, or a count from another app or time window. Without that like-for-like record, the headline’s “beating” claim remains unconfirmed.
Where can you play CrossWorlds now?
SEGA’s current official CrossWorlds page lists local play for one to four players and online play for up to 12. Its platform listing includes physical and digital editions for PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2, and digital-only availability for PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic Games. Physical availability can vary by region.

SEGA’s October 8, 2026 Version 1.4.3 notice says the update adds data for upcoming live-service operations and includes minor bug fixes. It also says players must update to the latest version to play online modes such as World Match and access DLC.
