Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if you want the safest all-purpose pick: polished Mario racing and battle modes, dependable four-player play on one Switch, and an optional 48-course expansion. Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds if you want tracks that transform mid-race, far deeper vehicle and gadget setup, a Sega-centered cast, or a game you can play across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Switch 2 and PC. Both Switch versions list up to 12 online racers, but that shared number does not prove identical matchmaking or network reliability.
What this comparison is really deciding
These games share the broad kart-racing formula—drifting, item attacks, shortcuts and accessible controls—but they are built around different priorities. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the established, immediately readable package. Its courses stay within the familiar Mario Kart structure, and its battle modes and local multiplayer make it easy to hand a controller to almost anyone. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is more experimental: a Travel Ring changes the destination during a race, and a large vehicle-and-gadget system asks you to make more decisions before you reach the starting line.

The better game depends less on the mascot you prefer than on how you want to race. A family or party looking for a predictable four-player session has a different need from a solo player who enjoys tuning a machine, learning alternate routes and adapting to a course that changes after the first lap.

How the races are structured
CrossWorlds changes the destination during a race
Travel Rings are the defining idea in CrossWorlds. Sega describes a three-lap race in which the second lap passes through a CrossWorld: racers leave the opening track, encounter a different route and hazards, then return to the original course for the final lap. The result is not simply a collection of separate tracks. You learn an opening section, react to a mid-race world change and then apply that knowledge when the original route comes back.
That structure gives CrossWorlds a stronger sense of disruption than a conventional circuit racer. A shortcut or off-road line may matter differently after the Travel Ring, and hazards in the alternate world can force you to alter a plan that worked on lap one. It also means that memorizing a single three-lap loop is not the whole challenge: you must recognize which section is active and prepare for the transition.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe keeps the circuit language familiar
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe uses the long-established Mario Kart approach: a course has a recognizable layout, items create openings for comebacks, and battle modes provide a separate ruleset from standard races. That familiarity is useful when several people have different experience levels. New players can understand the objective quickly, while experienced players can focus on drift timing, item storage, defensive driving and route optimization instead of learning a transformation mechanic.
The contrast is especially clear in a living-room session. Mario Kart lets a group replay a favorite course without explaining a new race phase each time. CrossWorlds asks the group to pay attention to where the Travel Ring sends them and how the second-world hazards alter the line. Neither approach is inherently better; one favors immediate readability, the other variety inside each race.
Which track philosophy suits you?
- Pick CrossWorlds’ approach if you enjoy adapting to changing routes, exploring off-road paths and learning shortcuts that may matter in different sections of a race.
- Pick Mario Kart’s approach if you want courses whose identity remains stable, making repeated practice and friendly competition easier to organize.
- For a mixed-skill group, Mario Kart’s familiar structure is the lower-friction choice; CrossWorlds can be more rewarding once everyone understands the Travel Ring rhythm.
Customization, vehicles and character choice
CrossWorlds puts setup at the center
CrossWorlds is the more ambitious game when you want to build a machine rather than select a preset. Nintendo’s listing reports 45 original vehicles and 70 gadgets. Sega’s launch announcement uses slightly different wording—more than 70 gadgets and over 70,000 machine combinations. Those figures are publisher specifications, so the safest interpretation is that the game offers a very large combination system rather than a guarantee that every listed combination feels meaningfully unique.

Gadgets make preparation part of the strategy. Before a race, you can think about the kind of acceleration, defense, handling or item interaction your build should support, then change the setup when a course or your driving habits expose a weakness. Players who like experimenting with builds, comparing trade-offs and refining a favorite machine have substantially more to investigate here than in Mario Kart’s simpler vehicle-combination system.
The same depth can create a learning burden. A newcomer may not know whether a poor result came from driving, a gadget choice or an unsuitable vehicle. If you prefer to improve by practicing the track itself, the extra layer may feel like homework; if you enjoy tuning and testing, it is a major reason to choose CrossWorlds.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe offers character and vehicle choices, but they sit inside a more readable ruleset. You can change the driver, kart body, wheels and glider and then learn how that combination behaves without managing a large gadget catalogue. The lower number of pre-race decisions is valuable when the game is being shared with children, guests or players who do not want to study a build menu.
That does not make Mario Kart shallow. Optimizing a combination, selecting tires for a preferred handling style and deciding when to hold an item still reward practice. The difference is where the complexity lives: Mario Kart concentrates it in driving and item decisions during the race, while CrossWorlds adds a much larger preparation phase.
Roster priorities
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the natural choice if the appeal of recognizable Mario-series characters is central to your group. CrossWorlds instead presents a Sega-focused cast, with Nintendo’s listing giving a total of 23 characters. Choose based on which universe you want on the screen, but remember that roster size alone does not establish how distinct the characters feel in play.

Multiplayer: what the numbers do and do not tell you
On a standard Nintendo Switch
Both official Switch listings show the same headline capacities: one system supports one to four players, local wireless supports two to eight, and online play supports two to 12. That makes either game a plausible choice for a small couch session or a larger group using multiple consoles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Nintendo explicitly says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play. The available CrossWorlds information does not establish one universal subscription rule across every platform, so check the requirements for the system you intend to use. A shared capacity number is not a promise that matchmaking pools, connection quality or moderation work the same way in both games.
Switch 2 changes the local-play ceiling for Mario Kart
Nintendo lists Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as supported on Switch 2. Its free Switch 2 update includes visual improvements, faster loading and support for up to eight players racing locally on one system. The standard Switch listing remains a one-to-four-player single-system experience, so the eight-player figure belongs to the updated Switch 2 use case rather than every version of the game.
CrossWorlds also has a Switch 2 version, but the supplied platform information does not establish an equivalent single-system player increase. If your main requirement is a large group sharing one newer Nintendo console, Mario Kart has the clearer documented advantage.
Online reliability is an open question, not a tie-breaker from the listings
PC Gamer’s 2026 catch-up review of the 2025 CrossWorlds release praised its racing, off-road paths, shortcuts and vehicle customization, but the reviewer reported online errors and criticized item balance. The review also found the transition into alternate tracks repetitive. Those observations describe one reviewer’s experience and should not be converted into a universal network verdict. The official player counts tell you the advertised capacity, not how often a match succeeds or how stable it feels in your region.

Platforms and release timing
| Game | Release information | Current hardware scope in the supplied listings |
|---|---|---|
| Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds | September 25, 2025 on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch; Steam and Epic Games Store followed September 26, 2025. | Switch 2 release recorded by Sega Support as December 4, 2025. Nintendo’s listing says Switch 2 compatibility is supported with upgraded resolution and frame rates on that system. |
| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | April 28, 2017. | Nintendo Switch game with supported Switch 2 play; the free update adds visual improvements, faster loading and the documented local-play enhancement. |
CrossWorlds is the straightforward choice if members of your group own different console families or prefer PC. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is tied to Nintendo hardware, although Switch 2 compatibility lets owners of the newer system continue using it.
The platform list does not establish cross-play between systems. If you plan to race with friends on different hardware, verify the current cross-platform features for the specific edition before buying; the supplied listings only establish where each game is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Expansion, course count and long-term value
Mario Kart’s 48-course Booster Course Pass
Nintendo says the Booster Course Pass adds 48 remastered courses. It is optional: you can compare the base games without treating the pass as a prerequisite. In the United States, Nintendo’s support information lists a $24.99 purchase option, or access through an eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Purchased DLC remains playable after a membership ends; access supplied through the membership lasts only while that membership is active. Prices and membership terms are US listing details and can change.
The pass matters most if your household will replay Mario Kart for months or wants the largest official course selection. If you only need a compact party game, buy or play the base game first and decide later. Do not count the 48 courses as part of the base-game comparison when judging the initial purchase.
CrossWorlds’ post-launch content
CrossWorlds has a Season Pass and crossover DLC, but the supplied information does not give a stable lineup or a single price that applies to every platform and date. Treat those additions as optional future content rather than a guaranteed part of the launch package. Check the store page for your platform if a particular crossover or season item is the reason you are considering the game.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
How to compare value without false precision
- Compare the base editions first: CrossWorlds’ changing-race structure and customization against Mario Kart’s established circuits and battle modes.
- Add the Mario pass only if the extra 48 courses are relevant to your expected play time or group.
- Do not infer that CrossWorlds’ published combination count equals 70,000 distinct quality experiences; it is a publisher-reported count of machine combinations.
- Do not infer that either game’s 2–12 online label guarantees equal matchmaking population or stability.
What the independent review perspective adds
The available independent perspective is useful precisely because it is mixed. PC Gamer’s 2026 catch-up review treats CrossWorlds as a 2025 release and credits the underlying racing, off-road alternatives, shortcuts and customization. The same review criticizes online errors, item balance and the repeated pattern of moving into alternate tracks. That combination suggests a game with a strong mechanical hook whose rougher edges may matter to players who spend most of their time online or who want every race transition to feel surprising.
There is no equivalent independent evidence here for a head-to-head test of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe against CrossWorlds. No comparative win rates, network study, sales statistic or controlled performance benchmark establishes a universal winner. The responsible conclusion is preference-based: official feature information supports a clear difference in design priorities, while the one named review supplies a warning about specific CrossWorlds issues rather than a final ranking.
Choose by player and situation
Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe when…
- You want a game that guests can understand within a race or two.
- Four people need to play on one standard Switch without setting up multiple systems.
- Battle modes are as important as conventional racing.
- You prefer stable, recognizable circuits to a race that changes world midway through.
- You want the option to expand the course library by 48 with the Booster Course Pass.
- Your group already uses Nintendo hardware and does not need PlayStation, Xbox or PC availability.
Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds when…
- Travel Rings, alternate worlds and changing hazards sound more exciting than a fixed circuit.
- You enjoy tuning vehicles and testing gadgets before a race.
- You want a Sega-centered roster rather than Mario characters.
- Your friends are spread across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC ecosystems, subject to the game’s current multiplayer features.
- You value off-road routes and shortcuts as a major part of the driving challenge.
- You are willing to tolerate a larger learning curve and to keep an eye on updates affecting online play or item balance.
For a household deciding together
Ask three questions before purchasing. First, will most sessions be local on one console or online across several systems? Second, does anyone actively want build experimentation, or would menus slow the group down? Third, is the course catalogue a long-term priority, making Mario Kart’s optional 48-course pass meaningful, or is a distinctive race format more important than quantity?
If the answers are split, use the strongest practical constraint rather than trying to average every preference. Hardware ownership, the number of local players and the importance of battle mode usually decide faster than a roster count. For a solo player, the deciding question is more likely to be whether the Travel Ring and gadget systems remain interesting after the novelty fades.
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm the platform. CrossWorlds is available on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, Steam and Epic Games Store. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a Switch title with supported Switch 2 play.
- Confirm the local setup. On a standard Switch, both list one to four players on one system and two to eight through local wireless. Mario Kart’s Switch 2 update documents up to eight local racers on one system.
- Decide whether online membership matters. Nintendo requires Switch Online for Mario Kart online play. Check the current platform rule for CrossWorlds rather than assuming the same requirement.
- Choose the learning style. Select CrossWorlds for Travel Rings, alternate routes and extensive setup; select Mario Kart for a familiar race-and-battle flow.
- Price the expansion separately. Mario Kart’s 48-course Booster Course Pass is optional and, in the US support listing, costs $24.99 or is included while an eligible Expansion Pack membership is active. CrossWorlds Season Pass contents vary by platform and date.
- Set expectations for online play. The advertised 2–12 Switch capacity is a maximum listing, not a guarantee of identical matchmaking, population or connection quality.
Bottom-line decision
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the better default recommendation for a group, a first kart racer or anyone who values dependable local play and battle modes over experimentation. Its Switch 2 update and optional 48-course pass extend a familiar format without changing what makes it approachable.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the more distinctive recommendation. Travel Rings give races a changing shape, and the vehicle-and-gadget system offers a level of preparation Mario Kart does not try to match. Pick it when those systems—and its broader hardware availability—are the reason you want a new racer, not merely because it has a large advertised combination count.
