Start with the default PlayStation layout: □ is Light, △ is Medium, ○ is Heavy, and × calls an Assemble Assist. Hold ← to stand guard or ↙ to crouch guard. For your first combos, repeat one button: L → L → L → L reaches a Skill and can cause a Break, M → M → M leads to a Super Skill, and H → H → H leads to an Ultimate Skill. Learn these in Startup Battle, then verify every character-specific command in Training Mode.

Marvel Tokon controls at a glance

The official PlayStation beginner guide uses PlayStation symbols for its examples: Light is □, Medium is △, and Heavy is ○. A default PS5 layout reported by Dot Esports adds the utility buttons below. Treat that secondary layout as a starting reference rather than a guarantee: your character, platform, accessibility settings, or a custom control scheme can change what you see. Open the in-game command display whenever an input matters.

Input Default action Beginner use
□ Light (L) Fast attack and the four-hit Light Link Attack route
△ Medium (M) Medium attack and the three-hit Medium Link Attack route
○ Heavy (H) Heavy attack and the three-hit Heavy Link Attack route
R1 Unique Attack Character-specific action; read its command entry
× Assemble Calls an Assemble Assist when pressed by itself
R2 Quick Skill Executes a Skill with one button
L1 Quick Dash Fast movement option in the reported default layout
L2 Quick Assemble With a direction, switches to the corresponding teammate
← Stand guard Hold to block standing attacks
↙ Crouch guard Hold to block while crouching
□ + × while not guarding Assemble Counter Backsteps and can automatically counter during the maneuver
□ + × while guarding Crossover Calls a teammate to interrupt and create an opening

The button names above describe the reported default PS5 arrangement, not a required control method. The official FAQ says PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers work, and button inputs can be customized. A regular gamepad is sufficient to learn the systems.

Learn the game in the right order

Pick a character you actually want to play

The official beginner guide recommends starting with a character you like and checking the Ease of Use rating on the character-select screen. It names Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine as beginner-friendly examples, while describing Iron Man and Spider-Man as relatively easy to learn. Storm and Danger are presented as more advanced choices. These are the guide’s recommendations, not a permanent tier list or an independently tested ranking; balance patches and personal preferences can change the experience.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose one main character first. Add a second teammate only after you can perform that character’s basic attacks, Skill, and Link Attacks without looking down at the controller. The goal is to reduce decisions while you learn movement, defense, and the team system.

Complete Startup Battle before general matches

Startup Battle is the official interactive tutorial. Its Basics section introduces individual-character actions, while Assemble teaches team mechanics. The beginner guide recommends it before general play. If you prefer a slower pace, Training Mode lets you repeat the same action until the input and timing feel automatic.

Arc System Works Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine summarizes the intended entry point: “By repeatedly pressing the same attack button, you can easily perform beginner-friendly combo sequences.” That design lets you participate before you know motion inputs or elaborate team routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Movement, guarding, and emergency defense

Standing and crouching guard

Hold ← to stand guard. Hold ↙ to crouch guard. Use the two positions deliberately rather than holding one forever: switch when you recognize the height of the incoming attack, and release guard when you need to move or attack. The game displays character-specific commands and frame information in Training Mode, so use the dummy to learn which attacks require a standing or crouching response.

Assemble Counter

Press □ + × while you are not guarding to perform Assemble Counter. It backsteps and can automatically counter an attack during the maneuver. Because it is an active defensive option, do not mash it whenever you are nervous. Practice recognizing an approaching attack, then use the move to create space or punish the committed action.

Crossover

Press □ + × while you are guarding to perform Crossover. This calls a teammate to interrupt the opponent and create a counterattack opening. The same two buttons therefore have different results depending on whether guard is held. In Training Mode, test both states separately so you can tell which defensive action came out.

Assemble Assists and switching

Call the teammate you want

Press × to call an Assemble Assist. The official guide maps directional choices as follows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Neutral or → + ×: call the second teammate.
  • ↓ + ×: call the third teammate.
  • ← + ×: call the fourth teammate.

The direction selects the teammate; it is not a separate attack button. Practice each direction while watching which character enters, especially if your team order changes between matches.

Switch directly or follow the prompt

Use a direction plus L2 to switch to the corresponding teammate. After calling an assist, the game can display a “Switch?” prompt. Press L2 while that prompt is visible to switch to the assisting character. The prompt is a useful guided route for beginners because it links an assist to a controlled tag instead of asking you to remember every team direction immediately.

Beginner Link Attack combos

Link Attacks are the easiest place to start because they use repeated attack buttons. In the routes below, L means Light (□), M means Medium (△), and H means Heavy (○).

Route What the official guide says it does What to practice
L → L → L → L Chains into a Skill and can trigger a Break, including a stage transition Press □ four times at a steady rhythm, then confirm whether the Skill and Break occur in the situation
M → M → M Leads into a powerful Super Skill Press △ three times and watch for the Super Skill ender
H → H → H Leads into an even stronger Ultimate Skill Press ○ three times and confirm the Ultimate Skill animation

These are introductory routes, not guaranteed optimal-damage combos. The official guide supplies no damage values and does not claim that one string is best for every character, stage, matchup, or version. Some characters may have different follow-ups or conditions, so check the command list for the character you selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to make the strings reliable

  1. Enter Training Mode with one character and disable distractions such as a moving opponent.
  2. Start with the Light route. Press the same button four times without adding directions.
  3. Watch the command display and the dummy’s health. Confirm that every press registers as the intended attack.
  4. Repeat until you can perform the route three times in a row from a neutral position.
  5. Repeat the process with Medium and Heavy strings.
  6. Only then add movement, an assist, or a switch. If the route fails after an added action, remove that action and rebuild the sequence one input at a time.

Adding team coordination

The official guide’s advanced team example is:

L → M → H → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack

Use it as a structure for learning, not as a universal combo prescription. First make the L, M, H sequence work. Then identify the character’s listed Skill input. After that, practice the Assemble Rush and the follow-up separately in Training Mode. A route that works for one character may require different timing or may not exist for another.

Quick Skills or Command Inputs?

Marvel Tokon gives beginners two ways to execute Skills. Quick Skills use one button, while Command Inputs use motion inputs. The official sources describe a qualitative trade-off: Command Inputs provide slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge, but they require more execution. No exact percentage or numerical difference is published in the cited guides.

Execution style Input demand Known reward Best starting use
Quick Skill One button Lower than the Command Input version according to the guide, with no stated number Learn neutral, defense, Link Attacks, and match awareness without dropping the move
Command Input Motion input plus the attack button Slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge; exact values are not stated Add after the Quick Skill version is dependable and you want the extra resource return

Sekine’s beginner guidance is to use Quick Skills while learning fundamentals and try Command Inputs as your comfort grows. You do not need a motion input to begin playing effectively.

A secondary combo route: use it as a test case

Dot Esports reports a route written as Square > Triangle > Circle > down Circle, followed by a jump or chase and air follow-ups. That sequence is a secondary example, not part of the official beginner guide. Treat it as a route to investigate in Training Mode, not a promise that every character can perform it unchanged.

Character commands can be specific, patches can alter behavior, and remapping changes the physical buttons. Open the current command display, reproduce the grounded portion first, then test the jump or chase. If the game shows a different command, follow the in-game entry rather than the published notation.

Training Mode: a repeatable practice workflow

The official FAQ says Training Mode can display command inputs, frame data, and damage. It also includes scenario presets, bot settings, and record/replay tools. Official PlayStation product information describes custom bots and adjustable CPU settings. Use those tools to turn a vague “this combo drops” problem into a specific input or timing problem.

  1. Select the character and team. Use the same order you intend to take into matches; assist directions depend on team position.
  2. Turn on command input display. Confirm that □, △, ○, directions, and Skill inputs are being read as intended.
  3. Set the dummy’s behavior. Start with a passive dummy for combo execution, then use a recorded attack or a suitable scenario preset to test defense.
  4. Practice guarding. Test ← and ↙ against the dummy’s attacks so you can see when each guard state succeeds.
  5. Test Assemble Counter and Crossover separately. Perform □ + × with guard released, then repeat while guarding. Check that the resulting defensive action matches the situation.
  6. Rehearse assists and switches. Call each teammate with neutral/→, ↓, and ←, then try direction + L2. Use the visible “Switch?” prompt when it appears.
  7. Record the failure. If a combo drops, record the dummy or replay your attempt and inspect the first incorrect command rather than immediately speeding up.
  8. Check damage and resource behavior. Compare Quick Skill and Command Input versions for your chosen character. The game can display the result, but the published guides do not establish universal numerical differences.
  9. Retest after updates. Character commands and system rules can change. Verify the current command list and Battle Guide whenever a patch changes behavior.

Choosing a team and understanding Breaks

Build around comfort first

The beginner guide suggests experimenting with a close-range and a long-range specialist, while emphasizing that the best team is the one you enjoy. Use that as a learning experiment, not a universal competitive rule. Pick a lead whose Light, Medium, and Heavy Link Attacks you can perform, then choose a teammate whose assist direction and play distance make sense to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why only two characters may be available at the start

The official FAQ says a match starts with the first two selected characters available. The rest of the team can be assembled after a qualifying Break. The FAQ lists several ways this can happen, including certain attacks or throws, selected Skill attacks, a successful Light Link Attack route near the screen edge, and losing a round. Because system rules may be adjusted by updates, consult the current in-game Battle Guide when the exact trigger matters for a particular match.

This rule changes how you should practice: learn the opening pair first, then rehearse the action that brings another teammate into play. Do not assume every Link Attack causes the same Break condition; the FAQ describes qualifying situations rather than saying that every route has the effect.

A beginner match plan

  1. At round start, identify your active pair. Know which two characters are available under the current team rules.
  2. Use movement and guard before chasing damage. Hold ← or ↙ when you need to block and learn the opponent’s attack height.
  3. Call an assist with × when you have a clear purpose. Use the directional selection deliberately, then watch for the “Switch?” prompt.
  4. Take the simplest confirmed hit. Use L → L → L → L, M → M → M, or H → H → H only when the starter connects.
  5. Attempt a Break or team action only after the basic string is stable. Adding an assist or switch too early makes it harder to identify why the combo failed.
  6. Use Assemble Counter or Crossover as identified defensive choices. Counter is performed outside guard; Crossover is performed while guarding.
  7. After the match, reproduce the decisive moment in Training Mode. Practice the exact guard, assist, or Link Attack that would have changed the exchange.

Platforms, modes, and online requirements

The official FAQ identifies PS5 and PC versions and lists 20 launch characters. It says online play requires an internet connection plus PlayStation Plus on PS5 or a PlayStation account on PC. Availability, roster counts, account rules, and service requirements can change, so check the current product information for your region before purchasing or planning online play.

Use case Officially listed information
Offline play Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, and Character Guides
Online PS5 Internet connection and PlayStation Plus are required according to the FAQ
Online PC Internet connection and a PlayStation account are required according to the FAQ
Supported controllers PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers are supported; button inputs are customizable

The PlayStation beginner guide was published July 20, 2026, to prepare players for the July 24–26 Open Beta on PS5 and PC. Those dates are historical; they are not a current access window.

Common control problems and fixes

“My repeated-button combo stops early.”

Check the command display first. If one press is missing, slow the rhythm and use a passive dummy. If all four inputs register but the Skill or Break does not occur, test the route in the character’s current command list and move away from a wall or screen edge to see whether the condition is positional.

“□ + × gives me the wrong defensive move.”

Guard state determines the result. Release guard for Assemble Counter; hold guard for Crossover. Practice each version from a neutral reset so an accidental held direction or guard input does not obscure the cause.

“I called the wrong teammate.”

Use the direction mapping deliberately: neutral or → for the second teammate, ↓ for the third, and ← for the fourth. Rehearse the sequence after every team-order change. A direction plus L2 switches rather than calls an assist.

“The command works with Quick Skill but not with a motion.”

Return to the Quick Skill while learning the rest of the sequence. Then practice the motion alone in Training Mode with input display enabled. The Command Input is an optional execution upgrade that offers slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge, not a prerequisite for learning the character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A published combo does not work for my character.”

Do not force the route. The Dot Esports sequence is a secondary example, and the official Link Attack strings are introductory patterns rather than universal optimal routes. Read the current in-game commands for your character and version, then build a route from a confirmed starter.

A practical first-week practice plan

Session 1: controls and defense

  • Complete Startup Battle’s Basics section.
  • Perform standing and crouching guard against a simple dummy attack.
  • Perform Assemble Counter outside guard and Crossover while guarding.

Session 2: Link Attacks

  • Perform L → L → L → L three times in succession.
  • Perform M → M → M and H → H → H three times each.
  • Note which routes produce a Skill, Super Skill, Ultimate Skill, or Break for the selected character.

Session 3: team actions

  • Call each teammate with the correct direction plus ×.
  • Switch with direction + L2.
  • Use the “Switch?” prompt after an assist.

Session 4: input choice

  • Perform the character’s Skill with Quick Skill.
  • Learn the same Skill’s Command Input from the command display.
  • Choose the version you can execute reliably, then compare the displayed damage and Skill Gauge behavior in Training Mode.

Session 5: a real match and review

  • Play with one main character and one familiar teammate.
  • Use only the Link Attack you can confirm.
  • Afterward, recreate one missed defense or dropped combo in Training Mode and fix that specific problem.

What to remember before your first online match

  • □, △, and ○ are Light, Medium, and Heavy in the official PlayStation examples.
  • Repeated-button Link Attacks let you learn useful combo outcomes without motion inputs.
  • Guard direction changes between standing and crouching defense.
  • □ + × behaves differently depending on whether you are guarding.
  • × calls an assist; directions choose the teammate, while direction + L2 switches.
  • Quick Skills are the accessible starting point; Command Inputs trade execution difficulty for slightly more damage and Skill Gauge.
  • Training Mode’s input, frame, damage, bot, scenario, and replay tools are the place to verify a character-specific route.
