What Mario Kart World is built to do
A Nintendo Switch 2-only purchase
Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. Nintendo’s U.S. product page lists a regular price of $79.99 and a June 5, 2025 release date. The price is a regional listing that may change, so check the current store page before buying. If you own only the original Nintendo Switch, the hardware requirement is the first and most important part of the decision: this is not a choice between two games you can install on the same older console.
The exclusivity also gives the game a straightforward household question. A Switch 2 owner can buy it without adding another platform, while a player who does not own Nintendo’s newer system must include that console in the total cost. The game itself is the relevant purchase for an existing Switch 2 household; accessories are optional rather than a requirement established by Nintendo’s product information.

Courses connected by a world, not just a menu
Mario Kart World links its courses through a traversable setting. That structure matters because the game is not limited to selecting an isolated track, finishing a race, and returning to a menu. Its documented modes include Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Free Roam, and battle modes, giving the package several ways to use the connected environment.
Grand Prix is the traditional progression for players who want a series of races. Knockout Tour provides an elimination-style format within the game’s broader race offering. Free Roam is the option to investigate when you want to drive around rather than immediately queue for a standard competition. Battle modes provide a different objective from point-to-point racing. Nintendo has continued to change the feature set after launch, so the current product page is the right place to verify exactly which routes and functions are available in your version.
Large fields and several ways to play together
Nintendo documents races with up to 24 drivers. That is a major part of World’s identity: a race can feel like a large event rather than a small contest among a handful of karts. The same official information lists split-screen play for up to four players on one system and wireless play for up to eight players across systems.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Those numbers answer different household needs:
- One Switch 2 in one room: up to four people can play locally on the same system, subject to the controllers and display setup you have.
- Several systems nearby: local wireless supports up to eight players across systems.
- Large online-style fields: Nintendo’s feature information describes races with up to 24 drivers. Confirm the current online requirements and mode rules before organizing an event, because the game has received post-launch changes.
This is unusually useful if your priority is a big shared race, but it does not automatically make World the best local multiplayer game for every household. A family that wants four people on one screen may value the documented split-screen support more than a solo player who never uses it.
Updates mean the launch description is not the final description
Nintendo has added team play to Knockout Tour, as well as routes and spectator functionality in updates. These additions show that the mode list can evolve after release. Treat older launch coverage as a starting point rather than a complete current specification, and check Nintendo’s official product information for the latest feature set when you are deciding whether a particular mode is present.
What Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is built to do
Play across console families and PC
SEGA released Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Current SEGA support information also covers a Nintendo Switch 2 edition. Because editions are not interchangeable by default, verify the exact listing for your console or PC before purchasing. The broad platform footprint is the clearest contrast with Mario Kart World: you can choose CrossWorlds without committing to Nintendo’s newer hardware.
Prices are not presented as one universal figure. They vary by platform and edition and can change over time, so compare the current store listing for the specific version you need rather than assuming that a price from one console applies elsewhere.

Portals that change the world during a race
SEGA describes CrossWorlds as a racer that spans land, sea, air, and space. Its signature idea is that races can shift between worlds through portals. Instead of treating every course as a fixed route with one visual identity, the portal mechanic makes the transition itself part of the race’s spectacle and decision-making.
The practical question is whether you enjoy adapting to a course that changes its setting and potentially its driving feel. If the fun for you comes from anticipating a transition, learning how a route behaves after a portal, and seeing different environments in one event, CrossWorlds presents the more direct version of that fantasy. If you prefer learning one coherent circuit and optimizing every corner without a mid-race world change, Mario Kart World’s connected-course approach may feel more natural.
Vehicle customization is a core attraction
CrossWorlds places more emphasis on tuning the vehicle itself. A PC Gamer reviewer praised the game’s track experimentation and vehicle customization; that is a reviewer’s evaluation, not an objective measurement or a guarantee that every player will prefer its handling. Customization is nevertheless an important buying signal. Players who like changing a machine’s setup and experimenting with different combinations have a reason to investigate CrossWorlds before choosing a racer based only on character roster or brand familiarity.
SEGA also describes solo and team play, along with offline and online modes. The availability of a mode does not establish identical player counts on every platform, and the publisher’s support information should be checked for the edition you intend to use.

A sales milestone, not a head-to-head score
On October 23, 2025, SEGA announced the headline “Over 1 Million Units Sold Worldwide and Still Counting!” The company said the milestone included physical units and digital downloads across platforms. It is a historical sales announcement, not a current total and not evidence that CrossWorlds is better than Mario Kart World. It does, however, confirm that the game reached a substantial audience across its multi-platform release.
How the two racers differ in the decisions that matter
1. Hardware access
Hardware is the easiest tie-breaker. Mario Kart World requires Nintendo Switch 2. CrossWorlds is available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC, with a Switch 2 edition addressed by SEGA’s current support information. If your friends or family already play on several console families, CrossWorlds creates fewer hardware barriers. If everyone you intend to play with is on Switch 2, Mario Kart World’s exclusivity is less of a disadvantage.
Do not treat “Switch” as a single edition when shopping. A Nintendo Switch listing and a Nintendo Switch 2 listing can represent different versions, and the current support documentation should settle compatibility before you place an order.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

2. What happens outside a standard race?
Mario Kart World has the broader documented activity list: Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Free Roam, and battle modes, all connected through a traversable setting. That makes it the stronger fit for someone who wants to drive around between competitive events or use several distinct modes in one session.
CrossWorlds answers the same desire differently. Its variety comes from portal transitions between worlds and from the ability to tune vehicles, while SEGA lists solo, team, offline, and online play. Choose World for a place to explore; choose CrossWorlds for race routes that transform and a machine you can adjust.
3. Which mechanics sound more fun?
Mario Kart World’s appeal is continuity: courses relate to one another inside a larger navigable setting, and the game supports both conventional Grand Prix progression and nonstandard activities. CrossWorlds’ appeal is contrast: a portal can move the race into another world, and the vehicle-customization layer gives you another way to experiment before the starting lights.
Neither description proves which game handles better. The available evidence supports a preference-based decision rather than a universal quality ranking. Ask yourself which sentence sounds more exciting:
- “I want to learn a connected map, roam between activities, and race in a large field.”
- “I want the course to change worlds and let me build a setup that suits my style.”
The first points toward Mario Kart World; the second points toward Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

Mario Kart World has unusually specific local figures: up to four players on one system and up to eight through local wireless across systems. Nintendo also documents races with up to 24 drivers. This makes it the easier choice when you are planning a four-player living-room session or a larger gathering that can supply several systems.
CrossWorlds supports solo and team play and offers offline and online modes, but you should not assume that every platform exposes the same player count or feature combination. Check the platform-specific support information if your decision depends on a precise lobby size, cross-platform arrangement, or local setup.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a household that owns multiple console types, CrossWorlds may be the practical choice even if World’s local numbers are attractive. A feature is useful only when everyone can access the same edition and hardware.
5. How should you think about cost?
Mario Kart World has a clearly cited U.S. list price of $79.99, but that figure applies to Nintendo’s U.S. store page at the time it was listed and can change. It also presumes that you already own, or are willing to buy, a Nintendo Switch 2.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCrossWorlds has platform- and edition-specific pricing. A fair comparison requires checking the two current stores on the day you buy. Do not compare a discounted digital edition of one game with a regular-price physical edition of the other, and do not assume that a Switch 2 edition has the same contents or price as a version for another platform.
6. Which game is likely to keep changing?
Mario Kart World has already received updates that added team play to Knockout Tour, routes, and spectator functionality. That gives the game a documented history of post-launch feature changes. CrossWorlds’ available description establishes its modes and portal-driven design, but the specific update schedule and platform parity should be checked through current SEGA support information. In both cases, confirm live features before buying for a particular event or mode.

The hardware question disappears, leaving the game’s connected-world structure and race formats to decide the purchase. You can access Free Roam, Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, and battle modes without adding another platform to the household.
You want a large race field
Up to 24 drivers is the clearest documented number in this comparison. If the excitement of a crowded race matters more than changing vehicle setups, World has the stronger feature match.

You want to explore between races
Free Roam and the traversable setting make World the better fit for players who want more than a sequence of isolated track selections.
Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds if these statements describe you
You need a game that is not tied to one console family
CrossWorlds’ PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC availability gives it the practical advantage for mixed-platform households and PC players. Verify the exact edition, including the Switch 2 version, before buying.
You enjoy races that change their setting
The portal mechanic and the land, sea, air, and space premise make CrossWorlds the natural choice if mid-race world transitions are more compelling to you than a single connected map.
You like experimenting with vehicle setups
Vehicle customization is a central part of CrossWorlds’ identity, and a PC Gamer reviewer specifically praised that feature alongside the game’s track experimentation.
You want both offline and online options
SEGA describes solo and team play plus offline and online modes. Because details can vary by platform, check the support information for the version your group will actually use.
A practical buying checklist
- List the hardware everyone will use. If any required player is not on Switch 2, Mario Kart World may require an additional hardware purchase. CrossWorlds removes that particular restriction but still requires compatible editions.
- Decide whether exploration or transformation is the priority. Choose Mario Kart World for a connected setting and Free Roam; choose CrossWorlds for portal transitions between worlds.
- Match the multiplayer format. Use Nintendo’s documented figures—four on one system, eight through local wireless, and up to 24 drivers—when planning a World session. For CrossWorlds, verify the count and mode rules on your platform.
- Check the current store listing. Confirm region, edition, price, and platform. Mario Kart World’s cited U.S. price is $79.99, while CrossWorlds pricing varies by platform and edition.
- Check updates before an event. Nintendo has added Knockout Tour team play, routes, and spectator functionality after launch. Confirm the current feature set rather than relying on an older description.
- Buy for the mechanic you will actually use. A larger roster or a sales milestone should not outweigh the way you prefer to race. Pick the connected-world format or portal-and-customization format that matches your group.
Final recommendation by player type
For a Nintendo Switch 2 owner seeking a broad, explorable package with large races and clearly documented local multiplayer, Mario Kart World is the more fitting choice. For a player who wants PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, or PC access and prefers world-shifting tracks with vehicle customization, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the better fit.
That recommendation is intentionally conditional. The available information supports a feature-based match, not a claim that one racer is objectively superior. Check the current platform listing and update notes, then choose the game whose hardware, multiplayer arrangement, and core mechanic line up with how you intend to play.
