Best Controller and Assist Settings for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

By VGSources Team 9 min read

There is no source-backed universal “best” setup for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The most reliable approach is to turn on only the assistance that solves your current problem, then disable assists one at a time as you gain control. Start with steering assist if you regularly leave the track; add auto-accelerate when holding acceleration is tiring; add auto-trick when aerial inputs are difficult. Use the in-game Controls screen as the final authority for button labels on your platform.

What the best setup actually means

SEGA identifies three assists in its support guidance: steering assist, auto-accelerate and auto-trick. SEGA says these options make control easier, but its official material does not establish one combination as the fastest or most competitive. An assist can reduce workload while also changing how directly you handle a task, so “best” depends on whether you are learning the tracks, avoiding mistakes, reducing repeated inputs or preparing for fully manual driving.

The practical target is a setup that lets you hold a clean line and make deliberate decisions. Change one option at a time, test it in a low-pressure race or Time Trial, and keep the setting that addresses a specific problem. Do not treat an assist-off configuration as automatically superior: no published statistic in the official material compares lap times, win rates or error rates between these settings.

Quick recommendations by player need

What you are trying to solve Starting setup How to refine it
Frequent off-track errors or difficulty steering Turn on steering assist. After several races, turn it off briefly and compare whether you can choose your line more confidently.
Too many repeated acceleration inputs Try auto-accelerate. Keep steering and trick assistance independent; disable auto-accelerate if you prefer pressing acceleration yourself.
Aerial tricks are hard to input consistently Try auto-trick. Compare assisted and manual tricks in practice. The French manual says manual execution remains possible and may produce more tricks.
Maximum direct control Disable assists individually rather than all at once. Use Time Trial ghost lines to learn racing lines while you adapt to each manual task.
You already know Team Sonic Racing’s shoulder-button layout Try Team Sonic Racing Controls if your platform offers it. Compare comfort in a low-stakes race; the manual documents the layout but does not claim it improves results.

These are sensible starting points based on SEGA’s description of the assists, not laboratory-tested performance rankings.

  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Steering assist: the safest first change

Steering assist is the first option to test when the car feels difficult to keep on the course. SEGA’s “The game is difficult; are there any tips?” guidance specifically names it as an assist to enable. The official guidance does not provide a detailed behavior specification, such as how strongly it corrects a turn or how it interacts with drifting. Read the current in-game description before deciding how much correction you want.

When to enable it

  • You regularly run wide in ordinary turns.
  • You are learning a track and need to concentrate on braking, drifting or hazards rather than constant steering correction.
  • You are using a new controller or layout and want to separate control familiarity from racing decisions.

When to test it off

Once you can complete several laps without repeated wall hits or off-track errors, disable steering assist for a short Time Trial. If your line becomes more predictable and you prefer choosing every correction yourself, leave it off. If the change creates more mistakes than it solves, turn it back on and revisit it after more practice. The evidence does not support calling either choice universally faster.

Auto-accelerate: fewer repeated inputs

The official online manual describes auto-accelerate as removing the need to provide acceleration input continuously. It is therefore the natural setting for players who find holding or repeatedly pressing acceleration uncomfortable, distracting or fatiguing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reasons to use it

  • It reduces the number of repeated acceleration inputs you must make.
  • It lets you focus attention on steering, drifting, jumps and track decisions.
  • It can make an initial learning session less demanding when several controls are unfamiliar.

Reasons to leave it off

Some players prefer an explicit acceleration button because it feels more direct or because they want acceleration input to be a deliberate part of their routine. The supplied official material does not describe a lap-time advantage either way. Treat auto-accelerate as a comfort and workload choice, not a performance upgrade.

Auto-trick: assisted aerial inputs with a manual option

Auto-trick is intended to make aerial trick inputs easier. SEGA lists it among the assists that simplify control. A French version of the official manual adds an important qualification: assisted tricks happen automatically, while manual tricks remain available; it also notes that manual execution may yield more tricks.

Use auto-trick while learning

Enable it if you are missing aerial inputs because the timing or button sequence is unfamiliar. This lets you learn track routes and jump approaches without making every early attempt a test of manual trick timing.

Move toward manual tricks deliberately

If you want to decide exactly when to trick, disable auto-trick after you know the relevant jump approaches. Practice the same section repeatedly and compare whether manual input gives you the additional trick opportunities described by the French manual. That note is a manual caveat, not a guarantee that every player will gain time or that every jump supports the same result.

Choosing a controller layout

The official manual distinguishes Standard Controls from Team Sonic Racing Controls. Both layouts use the left stick for steering or directional input. The Team Sonic Racing diagram shown for a PlayStation-style controller places acceleration on R1 or R2 and land drifting on L1 or L2; in water sections, the shoulder input is used for Charge Jump.

Those labels come from the manual’s platform-style diagrams, which use button glyphs that can vary by system. They are not a promise that every PC, Xbox or Nintendo controller displays the same names or offers both presets. Open your platform’s own control menu and verify the current mapping before memorizing a button.

Standard Controls

Choose Standard Controls if you want the default arrangement presented by your version or if you are starting without a prior layout preference. Keep the left stick for steering and use the on-screen diagram to confirm acceleration, drift, flight and water actions.

PlayStation Sony 5 DualSense Wireless Controller - Gray Camouflage (Renewed)
  • Wireless Controller: The controller connects wirelessly via Bluetooth for convenience.
  • DualSense Technology: Features advanced haptic feedback and adaptive trigger buttons for immersive gaming.
  • Gray Camouflage Design: Stylish and unique design with a gray camouflage pattern.
  • 17 Buttons: Includes 12 main buttons and 5 customizable buttons for versatile gameplay.
  • PlayStation 5 Compatible: Works with all PlayStation 5 games and accessories.

Team Sonic Racing Controls

This preset is worth trying when you already know the shoulder-button arrangement from that control style. Familiarity can reduce relearning, but the manual does not claim that the preset improves results. Compare both layouts in a low-stakes race, where you can notice accidental inputs without risking an important event.

How to change the layout and assist settings

SEGA Support gives this route for changing a controller layout:

  1. From the main menu, select Help & Options.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Controls.
  4. Choose the available layout or assist options, then confirm the change.

The same support article says button size and opacity can be changed and that buttons can be dragged. Its instructions appear to concern a touch-based layout, so do not assume those editing controls exist on a gamepad, keyboard or every console version.

Check the active platform menu

Control names and glyphs can differ by platform. If a button shown in an online diagram does not match your screen, trust the in-game diagram for your installed version. The official manual’s English search result also reflects closed-network-test-era specifications, which is another reason to verify current labels in the game rather than relying on an older image.

PlayStation-specific options

The official PlayStation listing confirms DualSense vibration support for the PS5 version. It also lists alternate presets or some remapping, basic stick-sensitivity and inversion options, and individual assists. These are PlayStation-page claims, not a complete feature matrix for PC, Xbox or Nintendo systems.

Stick sensitivity

If your PlayStation version exposes stick sensitivity, adjust it only after choosing a layout and deciding whether steering assist is helping. Make a small change, run the same section, and watch for either overcorrection or sluggish response. The available material confirms the option is listed but does not provide recommended numeric values.

Inversion

Use an inversion option only when it matches the way you already control vertical movement. The PlayStation listing confirms basic inversion options, but it does not establish that one direction is preferable for racing. Check flight controls separately from land controls because the manual treats land, flight and water as distinct control contexts.

Vibration

DualSense vibration is an optional feedback feature, not a requirement for using any assist. Keep it enabled if physical feedback helps you notice impacts or actions; disable it if it distracts you. No official source supplied here measures whether vibration changes performance.

A deliberate practice routine

SEGA’s official tips emphasize practice choices rather than a magic settings combination: use Time Trial ghost lines, choose a class that suits you and adjust rival strength. Build those recommendations into a repeatable routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: establish a baseline

  1. Choose a familiar track and a class that feels manageable.
  2. Set only the assist you believe addresses your biggest problem.
  3. Run enough laps to identify repeated mistakes rather than judging a single accident.

Step 2: follow ghost lines

In Time Trial, use another player’s ghost line as a visual reference. Observe where the line enters and exits turns, then repeat the section without changing several settings at once. The official recommendation is to learn from ghost lines; it is not evidence that a particular assist combination produces the fastest line.

  • Elevate PC gaming with advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in a range of blockbuster PC titles.

Step 3: adjust rival strength

SEGA recommends changing rival strength. Lower it while you learn a layout or a new control preset, then raise it when you can complete clean laps. This changes the pressure of the race; it does not prove that your controller configuration is optimal.

Step 4: remove one assist

When a task feels stable, disable only its related assist. For example, remove auto-trick while leaving steering assist on if aerial inputs are the skill you want to practise. Run the same track and compare the specific task you changed. Keeping the other settings fixed makes the result easier to interpret.

Recommended setup paths

New player or frequent off-track errors

  1. Enable steering assist.
  2. Add auto-accelerate if continuous acceleration input is burdensome.
  3. Add auto-trick if aerial timing is getting in the way of learning the course.
  4. After a few races, turn off one assist and test the effect before changing another.

This sequence follows SEGA’s statement that the three assists make control easier. It is an editorial starting point, not a tested fastest configuration.

Player who wants fewer repeated inputs

  1. Enable auto-accelerate.
  2. Leave steering assist on or off according to your line-control errors.
  3. Leave auto-trick independent, based on whether you want automatic or manual aerial inputs.

Player seeking more manual control

  1. Disable steering assist, auto-accelerate and auto-trick one at a time.
  2. Use Time Trial ghost lines to learn the track while you adapt.
  3. Return an assist temporarily if removing it creates a specific, repeatable problem.

Player familiar with Team Sonic Racing shoulder controls

  1. Select Team Sonic Racing Controls if the preset is available on your platform.
  2. Confirm the displayed glyphs in the in-game menu.
  3. Test acceleration, land drifting and water Charge Jump in a low-stakes race.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

“The game is difficult; are there any tips?”

SEGA uses that wording in its support FAQ and answers with the three assists plus practice guidance. Start with the assist that matches the difficulty instead of enabling every option permanently.

The button shown online does not match my controller

Use the current in-game Controls screen. The manual separates Standard and Team Sonic Racing layouts, uses platform-style diagrams and reflects specifications that may not match a later build.

I cannot find drag-and-drop button editing

SEGA’s layout article describes button size, opacity and dragging in what appears to be a touch-based interface. Those controls may not apply to your gamepad or console menu.

Changing every setting made it impossible to tell what helped

Restore a known layout, choose one assist, and change only one variable per test. Use the same track and similar rival strength so the comparison concerns the control change rather than a different challenge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

I want a proven fastest setup

No published statistic or official test in the supplied material establishes a fastest controller layout or assist combination. Treat claims that one preset is objectively best as unsupported unless they provide reproducible testing for the same platform, version and conditions.
