Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for races that change course mid-event, gadget-driven customization, and crossplay. Choose Team Sonic Racing if you want cooperation between three-person teams or a confirmed story scenario in Team Adventure. The best fit depends on how you want to race, not on a verified head-to-head verdict about handling or overall quality.
What makes the races different?
CrossWorlds changes the route during a race
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds uses a three-lap structure. After the first lap, a Travel Ring sends racers to a different world for lap two. On lap three, they return to the original course, but with changes such as different shortcuts, obstacles, Rings, and items. That makes route shifts the game’s defining feature; SEGA describes Travel Rings as a way to “completely shak[e] up each race” in its September 25, 2025 launch announcement.

In Team Sonic Racing, players form teams of three in solo, local, or network play and compete on team placement. Its teamwork actions include Touch Dash, which helps a slowed teammate recover speed; Line Boost, which uses a teammate’s slipstream; item transfers; and a shared Ultimate Boost. The game also allows single races, so the team system is central without being the only way to play.

What do customization and content look like?
CrossWorlds: gadgets and machine combinations
SEGA announced more than 70 gadgets and more than 70,000 machine combinations at launch. These are publisher-stated launch-era figures, not independent counts or current roster totals. The gadgets are intended to alter abilities and play style. SEGA’s launch announcement also said the game had 23 Sonic-universe characters at launch; updates and paid DLC mean that number should not be read as the current roster size.
Team Sonic Racing: performance parts and Wisp items
Team Sonic Racing allows players to change vehicle parts affecting performance and appearance. SEGA Japan lists 14 Wisp items with offensive, defensive, or comeback effects. The official page also lists Team Adventure alongside Grand Prix, Exhibition, Time Trial, and Challenge modes.
