If you want both familiar stages and a distinct new campaign in one release, the hybrid is the clearest fit.
What is the difference between a port, a remaster, and a new game?
These labels describe different kinds of releases, not interchangeable levels of quality. A port brings an existing game to another platform. A remaster revisits an existing game with updates, while a collection packages multiple older games together. A new game offers a new campaign or adventure; it may still use a familiar style or characters.
For Sonic, the useful question is what each release actually includes. The examples below document collections, remasters, and new campaigns; they do not establish the technical history or performance of every Sonic port. Compare a particular game’s supported platforms and features rather than assuming a port is automatically better or worse than another edition.
Which Sonic game matches the experience you want?
| Game | What it offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Sonic Origins | A remastered collection of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Classic Mode retains the original stage designs and rules; Anniversary Mode uses widescreen presentation and removes time-over and continue limits. It also includes unlockable content and a Museum. | Players who want a collected way to revisit early Sonic games, with a choice of play modes. |
| Sonic Superstars | A new 2D Sonic game set in the Northstar Islands, with new Emerald powers and Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy as playable characters. Its PlayStation listing describes local four-player campaign co-op and Battle Mode. | Players who want a fresh setting and abilities in a classic-style platformer. |
| SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS | A remaster of Sonic Generations’ 2D and 3D stages alongside a new Shadow Generations campaign. | Players who want older material and a distinct new campaign in one release. |
How should you decide where to start?
Choose familiar stages or a new setting
If revisiting early games is the point, start with Sonic Origins. If you would rather explore a new setting with new abilities, choose Sonic Superstars. SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is the middle ground: it revisits Sonic Generations while also including Shadow’s new campaign.

Check the modes and multiplayer you care about
Origins offers two ways to play its collected games, with Classic and Anniversary modes differing in presentation and rules. Superstars is the option here whose PlayStation listing specifically describes local four-player campaign co-op as well as Battle Mode. Check the listing for your own platform before buying; the available descriptions do not establish that every mode is offered identically on every platform.
Confirm platform and edition before buying
Availability and edition details can differ by platform. SEGA lists a standard physical Nintendo Switch edition of SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS as well as a digital edition. That does not establish current retailer stock or price, so check the seller’s live listing and confirm that the edition matches your console. The official product information for Origins and Superstars likewise describes features, not current prices or marketplace availability.

Does a remaster mean the game is less worthwhile than a new release?
Not by itself. A remaster may suit someone who specifically wants familiar stages, while a new game may be the better choice for a fresh setting or campaign. The product descriptions establish what these releases contain, but they do not provide a controlled comparison of performance across platforms or prove that one type is better value for every player.
In a GamesRadar report published October 1, 2026, Sonic Team lead Takashi Iizuka said, “Remaking an old game requires about as many resources as creating a new title.” The same report quotes him saying, “Rather than using those limited resources to make remakes and remasters, we have a stronger desire to provide fans with new games and deliver new surprises.” These are Iizuka’s reported comments about the studio’s preference, not a universal rule about game development.
