Sonic X Shadow Generations is a two-campaign package: a remastered Sonic Generations featuring Classic and Modern Sonic, plus the new Shadow Generations adventure. That pairing gives the release its appeal: players revisit familiar Sonic stages and then get a distinct Shadow-focused campaign with new Doom Powers. The overall quality supports calling it one of the series’ strongest releases, though critics have noted that Shadow’s campaign is relatively short on its own.
What’s included in Sonic X Shadow Generations?
The package brings together two action-platforming campaigns rather than extending one story with a separate character mode. SEGA describes Sonic Generations as a speed-running adventure through stages with Classic and Modern Sonic; Shadow Generations is a new game centered on Shadow. The campaigns share a release, but they are distinct in focus and should not be assumed to have the same length or structure.

Sonic Generations: a remastered return
The Sonic portion revisits the stage-based format of Sonic Generations, with Classic and Modern Sonic taking on stages in their respective styles. For returning players, its role is partly nostalgic; for the package as a whole, it supplies a substantial familiar campaign alongside the new Shadow material.
Shadow Generations: a new campaign
Shadow’s adventure is the new material. SEGA highlights Doom Powers that Shadow can use against enemies and for traversal and platforming challenges. The additions give this campaign its own identity rather than making it simply a reskin of Sonic’s stages. SEGA’s launch announcement describes the game and these abilities.

Is Sonic X Shadow Generations one of the best games in the series?
That is a review judgment, not an objective ranking, but the case for it rests on the strength of the stage design, bosses, collectibles, and presentation, together with the value of getting a remastered Sonic campaign and a new Shadow adventure in one release. IGN’s review praised those elements while describing Shadow’s new campaign as not especially long on its own. TechRadar likewise framed the release as a remaster paired with a new campaign. Those are critics’ assessments, not a claim of firsthand testing here.
The most useful way to read the praise is as a verdict on the combined package. The Sonic campaign provides the return to established material; Shadow’s Doom Powers and new stages provide the fresher contrast. If the new Shadow adventure is the main reason to play, its relative brevity is the important qualification. If the appeal is a strong Sonic collection with a new Shadow campaign included, the two-part structure is the central strength.
