Crafting recipes below are for one armor piece at a time; equip up to ten pieces, and mix types to suit your supplies and plans.
How armor pieces and capacity work
Armor is tracked in pieces, with a maximum of ten pieces equipped. The pieces do not have to match: you can combine types as you acquire them. Recipe quantities below are per piece, not for a full ten-piece loadout. The recipe and acquisition details come from game-guide and community sources rather than official documentation; check them against the version you are playing if an ingredient or behavior differs.
Craftable armor recipes
Leaf Armor
Combine 10 leaves and 1 cloth in your inventory to craft one piece. Leaves are the defining low-effort ingredient, while cloth is also required for each piece. Gamer Guides lists this recipe. Source: Gamer Guides
Hide Armor
Combine 2 deer hides and 1 cloth for one piece. Gamer Guides says deer and moose can be skinned for hides; a Steam recipe guide corroborates a hide-based recipe, though it uses the less-specific term “hide.” Gamer Guides · Steam Community recipe guide
#1 Best Overall
Bone Armor
Combine 4 bones, 1 rope, and 1 duct tape for one piece. Gamer Guides says bones can be collected by burning corpses on a campfire. The same ingredients are listed by the Steam recipe guide. Gamer Guides · Steam Community recipe guide
Tech Armor
Combine 1 Tech Mesh, 1 wire, 1 duct tape, 1 battery, and 1 circuit board for one piece. Tech Mesh is made at a 3D printer. Each piece uses one of every listed component; the Steam recipe guide corroborates the recipe. Gamer Guides · Steam Community recipe guide

Armor obtained from enemies or the story
Creepy Armor
Creepy Armor is acquired rather than crafted. Gamer Guides describes skinning eligible cannibals with the Utility Knife; another guide says it may drop from mutant enemies. The eligibility matters: do not assume every enemy will yield a piece. Gamer Guides · Steam Community recipe guide
Gold Armor
Gold Armor is a separate, story-related item found in a bunker, not an ordinary crafting recipe. Gamer Guides describes it as providing ten armor segments. Guidedragon characterizes Golden Armor as indestructible and relevant to the ending, but offering little physical protection in ordinary combat. Because its purpose is tied to the story, consult a current walkthrough for route and requirement details rather than treating it as a general combat upgrade. Which armor should you make or collect?
There is no one choice that suits every stage or goal. Compare the practical trade-offs: how reliably you can get the ingredients, how much crafting each piece requires, and whether the piece serves a combat or story purpose. The sources reviewed do not establish comparable, version-specific numerical protection ratings, so this guide does not assign a universal ranking.
| Type | How you get one piece | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Leaf | 10 leaves + 1 cloth | Simple ingredients; cloth is still needed for every piece. |
| Hide | 2 deer hides + 1 cloth | Requires hunting and skinning deer or moose for hides, according to Gamer Guides. |
| Bone | 4 bones + 1 rope + 1 duct tape | Several materials to gather; Guidedragon recommends it for early cave trips, a guide recommendation rather than an independently tested optimum. |
| Creepy | Skin eligible cannibals with a Utility Knife; guides also report drops from mutant enemies. | Depends on eligible enemy encounters rather than a repeatable crafting recipe. |
| Tech | 1 Tech Mesh + 1 wire + 1 duct tape + 1 battery + 1 circuit board | Needs five components per piece, including Tech Mesh made at a 3D printer; Guidedragon suggests tech or mixed tech/creepy armor later. |
| Gold | Found in a bunker; story-related. | Its reported story role and durability make it distinct from ordinary crafted combat armor. |
For a practical loadout, use what you can replenish and mix pieces instead of waiting to fill all ten slots with a single type. Guidedragon’s early-bone and later-tech-or-mixed suggestions are recommendations from that guide, not a tested best-build ranking.

How to read recipe and stat claims
The detailed recipe page from Gamer Guides lists a 2023 guide-release date and no clearly visible last-updated date. The Steam Community recipe guide was updated August 15, 2024, but currently carries a removed/incompatible notice, so it is corroboration rather than an authoritative current reference. Guidedragon’s comprehensive armor guide is dated October 18, 2025 and says its advice draws on latest content and community tests, but it is not official documentation. Check recipes in your game if they differ by version. Do not apply armor numbers from The Forest, the predecessor: its armor page is not a source for Sons of the Forest stats or recipes.
