A server that exits during startup needs different checks from one that runs but is invisible in the browser, and a listed server that hangs while loading points to a different port again.
For a home-hosted server, the current port reference uses UDP 8766 for game traffic, UDP 27016 for Steam browser queries, and UDP 9700 for world and save synchronization. All three require inbound firewall permission and router NAT forwarding. The sections below map each failure to the evidence and fix most likely to resolve it.

Start with the symptom, not a random setting
Before editing a configuration file or forwarding another port, record exactly what happens:

- Startup failure: the process exits immediately or stops while loading a world.
- Browser invisibility: the process stays running, but the server is absent from the public list.
- Join timeout: players can see the server but cannot establish a game connection.
- Loading hang or save-sync failure: joining stalls while the world loads, or progress does not appear.
- Mass rejection after a patch: everyone is refused after the game updates.
- Settings appear unchanged: a valid edit has no observable effect.
Open the server console and read the last lines before shutdown or the error. Change one setting at a time, restart, and note the result. This gives you a cause-and-effect trail instead of several simultaneous changes that are impossible to undo confidently.

Know the three network ports
The port roles are different, so forwarding only one can produce a partially working server. The current reference assigns these values:

For a home-hosted installation, all three must be open inbound and forwarded through NAT. A hosting panel may display provider-assigned ports instead; use the values shown for your service rather than assuming the home defaults.
When the server will not start or exits immediately
1. Read the console and log first
The final console lines distinguish a configuration parse error, a port conflict, and a world-loading failure. Save the relevant lines before making a change. Log visibility is itself a server setting, so make sure logging is enabled enough to capture the shutdown reason.
2. Validate dedicatedserver.cfg as JSON
Malformed JSON is a common post-edit cause. Look for a missing comma, mismatched quotation mark, or unmatched brace. Stop the service, copy the current file for safekeeping, and run the active file through a JSON validator. Correct the syntax, save the file, and restart.
If you have a last-known-good copy, compare the two files rather than rebuilding the entire configuration. This preserves unrelated settings and makes the offending edit easier to identify. Do not edit a similarly named copy in another folder; the service may never read it.

3. Check for a port conflict
Another process using a required port can prevent the server from binding during startup. The console normally provides the useful evidence. Stop duplicate server instances and any other service configured to use the same port, then start the server again. Do not change all three port values at once; change only the conflicting value if the log identifies one and update the matching firewall and NAT rules.
4. Test whether the save is the trigger
If the process reaches world loading and then exits, the save may be damaged. Stop the server, select another save slot or a fresh world temporarily, and start again. A different slot starting successfully points to the original save rather than a general installation or network problem.

Panels and services can use a working directory or user-data path that differs from the folder you opened manually. Verify the service’s active dedicatedserver.cfg, working directory, and data directory in the panel or launch configuration. A syntactically perfect file in an inactive folder has no effect.
When the server runs but is missing from the browser
Check query discovery before game traffic
Browser discovery depends on UDP 27016, not just the primary game port. Confirm that the query port configured for the service is reachable from outside the host network. A blocked query port can hide a healthy process from the browser.
Turn off unintended LAN-only mode
Check the server configuration for a LanOnly state. If it is enabled, the server is intended for local-network discovery and will not behave like a public server. Disable it when you need players outside the LAN, then restart and retest.

Verify the address and provider-assigned port
Use the public address and external port displayed by the hosting panel or your router’s WAN status. Do not substitute the server’s private address when testing from the internet. Managed providers may map an external port to an internal service port, so the panel’s assigned value takes precedence over the default reference.

Create or enable inbound rules for the server executable and the three required UDP ports. Check both the operating-system firewall and any security suite that can filter applications independently. A router rule cannot compensate for a host firewall that drops the packet after it arrives.
Test from a genuinely external network
Testing from the same LAN can succeed because of local routing or fail because the router lacks hairpin NAT, neither of which proves public reachability. Use a device on a different connection, such as a mobile-data hotspot, and search or connect using the public address. If the external test fails while local play works, focus on NAT, the provider port, or the upstream connection rather than the game installation.
When players see the server but cannot join
Check UDP 8766 first
Once the listing is visible, primary game traffic is the first network check. Confirm that UDP 8766, or the provider’s configured equivalent, is permitted by the host firewall and forwarded to the correct private address. A stale router rule pointing at an old DHCP address can look exactly like a closed port, so reserve the server’s local address or update the forwarding target.
Separate connection failure from loading failure
If the join attempt never establishes a session, continue investigating the game port, firewall, NAT, and address. If the server is reached and the screen hangs while the world loads, move to UDP 9700 instead. That port carries world and save synchronization; blocking it can produce a listed server with an apparently endless load.

Check the forwarding destination
For each rule, verify protocol (UDP), external port, internal port, and destination IP. The three values must be consistent with the service configuration. Forwarding a TCP rule, or forwarding UDP to a different machine, does not satisfy the requirement.
When everyone is rejected after a game update
A client and dedicated server on incompatible builds can reject every player immediately after a patch. Update the dedicated-server installation, restart it, and have clients update the game through their normal launcher. Confirm that the server reports the new build after restarting; restarting an old installation without updating its files does not resolve a version mismatch.
Do not diagnose a post-patch mass rejection as a port problem first when the server was reachable before the update. If one player can join after both sides update while others cannot, then investigate that player’s local installation separately; if nobody can join, verify the server build and restart state.
When configuration changes appear to do nothing
Locate the file the service actually reads
Check the panel’s data-path and working-directory fields, the launch arguments, and the account under which the service runs. Compare those paths with the file you edited. A copied configuration, a second installation, or a panel pointing at another user-data directory can make a correct change appear ignored.
Restart after saving
Many server settings are read only during startup. Stop the service cleanly, save the file, and start it again. Confirm the setting in the startup output or panel status rather than assuming it loaded.

Change one value at a time
Make a small, documented edit, restart, and observe the result. If the change causes a parse error or a new symptom, restore the backup and you have a clear rollback point. Bulk rewrites make it difficult to tell whether the path, syntax, or value was responsible.

Protect the complete data directory
Before an update, migration, or repair attempt, stop the service and copy the complete SonsOfTheForestDS data directory to separate storage. A partial copy may omit the save or metadata needed for recovery. Keep dated copies so a newer, damaged state does not overwrite the last known-good version.
Use a second slot as a diagnostic
Switch temporarily to another save slot or create a fresh world. If the alternate world starts, the original save is the likely fault. If every slot fails, return to the console, configuration, installation, and port-conflict checks instead of repeatedly modifying the damaged save.

Restore only with the service stopped
Stop the server before replacing a save or restoring a backup. Restore a known-good copy of the relevant data, start the service, and watch the log through world loading. Restoring while the process is running can leave files in a mixed state and make the original problem harder to diagnose.
Treat restart commands and slot changes as destructive operations
The server settings include initType, save-slot selection, autosave interval, and log visibility. The /restart command resets save data, so it is not a routine connectivity test. Use it only when you deliberately intend to initialize or reset the world and have confirmed that a backup exists.
A safe recovery and troubleshooting sequence
- Record the symptom. Note whether the process exits, is invisible, times out, hangs during loading, or rejects everyone.
- Capture evidence. Save the last console lines and relevant log entries before changing anything.
- Back up data. Stop the service and copy the complete
SonsOfTheForestDSdirectory before repair or migration work. - Check the active paths. Confirm the service’s configuration file, working directory, and user-data directory.
- Validate JSON. Correct commas, quotation marks, and braces in the active
dedicatedserver.cfg. - Test startup with another slot. This separates save corruption from a server-wide failure.
- Check the network by role. Use UDP 27016 for browser visibility, UDP 8766 for joining, and UDP 9700 for loading and save synchronization.
- Test externally. Use a network outside the server’s LAN and the public address or provider-assigned port.
- Update after patches. Update the dedicated-server files, restart, and verify build compatibility with clients.
- Roll back deliberately. If a change causes a new failure, restore the last-known-good configuration or save rather than stacking more edits.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting for troubleshooting
The underlying diagnostics are similar, but responsibility moves between you and the provider.

Managed hosting is most useful when router forwarding, firewall administration, update scheduling, or backup maintenance is the part you cannot reliably perform. It does not remove the need to check logs, active paths, build compatibility, or save integrity.
