This order prevents the most damaging failures: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long, redirect loops, broken images or scripts, and checkout callbacks that still use HTTP. HTTPS is expected by many payment integrations, but a certificate by itself is not PCI compliance.

What SSL changes on a WooCommerce store
“SSL” is the familiar term for the certificate and encrypted HTTPS connection now provided by TLS. The certificate proves that the server presenting your domain is authorized for it; HTTPS then encrypts traffic between a shopper’s browser and the endpoint handling TLS. WordPress describes the platform as fully compatible with HTTPS when a TLS/SSL certificate is installed and available for the web server: WordPress HTTPS documentation.
For WooCommerce, the practical result is that product pages, customer logins, cart data, checkout fields and administrative sessions can be requested over HTTPS. A payment gateway may refuse insecure checkout or insecure return URLs. WooCommerce says integrated gateways require at least rudimentary PCI compliance, including valid HTTPS/SSL; SSL alone still does not make the store PCI-compliant.

There are two separate jobs:
- Terminate TLS: install a certificate and configure the server, host or proxy to answer HTTPS on port 443.
- Tell WordPress and browsers to use it: change the site URLs, redirect old HTTP requests and repair every hard-coded HTTP asset or callback.
Completing only the second job produces errors. Completing only the first leaves shoppers and search crawlers able to use the old scheme.
Identify your hosting architecture before changing anything
Make a written record of the components that can handle a request. You need this map when a certificate appears valid in one place but WordPress or the browser still sees HTTP.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The exact canonical domain, including whether the store uses
wwwor the bare domain. - The hosting control panel or managed WooCommerce platform.
- Any CDN, load balancer or reverse proxy in front of the origin server.
- Whether the origin runs Apache, Nginx, or a provider-managed web server.
- Where DNS currently points and which component terminates TLS.
- How you can restore a backup or use an alternative administrator account if the URL change locks you out.
Create a current database and file backup before editing URLs, wp-config.php or server configuration. Record the existing WordPress Address and Site Address exactly; a difference in hostname, subdomain or trailing path can create a separate redirect problem.
Choose a certificate and installation route
The certificate must cover the precise hostname shoppers use and must be active on the server or TLS terminator that receives that hostname. WooCommerce lists Let’s Encrypt as a free option available on some hosts with one-click installation, and identifies Namecheap as an example of a paid option in its SSL FAQ. Availability, renewal handling and support depend on the provider.
| Route | Who installs the certificate | Renewal and port-443 work | Proxy/CDN considerations | Downtime and support considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Managed host with one-click certificate | The host’s control panel or support team | Often automated by that host; confirm that HTTPS is active on port 443 and that renewal is included. | Ask whether the host or a separate CDN terminates TLS and how the origin is reached. | Usually the lowest configuration risk; still test both hostname variants and the checkout flow. |
| Free Let’s Encrypt certificate on a supported host | The host generally provisions it from the panel. | Confirm automatic renewal and what happens if renewal validation fails. | Make sure the certificate is installed at the public TLS endpoint, not only on an unreachable origin. | No certificate fee on hosts offering the option; support quality and availability vary. |
| Paid certificate | You or the host installs the issued certificate and its required chain. | Renewal is your responsibility unless the host automates it; verify the 443 listener after installation. | Install it on whichever service answers the public domain, and configure the origin separately when required. | Pricing, validation and support depend on the certificate vendor and plan. |
| Self-managed Apache or Nginx | The server administrator installs the certificate and private key. | You configure the 443 virtual host/server block and renewal process. | Forwarded-protocol headers must be handled if a proxy terminates TLS before the origin. | Most control, but a bad virtual host or certificate chain can take the store offline. |
Do not switch WordPress URLs merely because a certificate has been purchased. Installation, activation and a working 443 listener are prerequisites.

Install the certificate and verify HTTPS at the server
- Use the host, certificate vendor or server administrator’s documented installation process. Select the exact domain and any hostname that will remain publicly reachable, such as the chosen
wwwor bare-domain version. - Confirm that the certificate is active at the public endpoint. A certificate installed only on an origin server will not help if a CDN or load balancer terminates TLS first.
- Verify that HTTPS is listening on port 443 and that Apache’s virtual host or Nginx server block for the domain points to the WooCommerce site. WooCommerce’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out the certificate, port-443 listener and virtual host when HTTPS errors occur: SSL error troubleshooting.
- Open the HTTPS URL in a private browser window. Inspect the certificate shown by the browser and load a simple page before touching WordPress’s URL settings. Resolve certificate-name, chain, or server errors at this layer first.
If HTTPS displays plain HTTP or the server returns ssl_error_rx_record_too_long, stop. That error usually means HTTPS is pointed at a listener returning ordinary HTTP, the certificate is absent, or port 443 is mapped to the wrong virtual host.
Change both WordPress URLs after HTTPS works
WordPress stores two related addresses. Change both together, and do it only after the server test succeeds.
- Sign in to WordPress and open Settings > General.
- Change WordPress Address (URL) from
http://tohttps://, preserving the exact hostname and path. - Change Site Address (URL) in the same way.
- Save the settings, then open a new private-window session at the HTTPS address.
- Clear any page, object or CDN cache only after confirming the HTTPS site responds; otherwise a stale cached redirect can hide the real result.
WooCommerce warns that setting these fields to HTTPS before the server is ready can cause errors. If the change makes the site unreachable, use the documented recovery method for your host or database to restore the previous values, fix the 443 configuration, and repeat the migration in the correct order.
Configure reverse proxies and load balancers
A proxy can receive HTTPS from the browser and send ordinary HTTP to the origin. WordPress then sees an HTTP request even though the shopper is secure. WooCommerce uses WordPress’s is_ssl() detection, so the proxy must communicate the original scheme.
Pass the HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO request header from the trusted proxy. The documented pattern sets the server HTTPS flag when that value is https:

if ( isset( $_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO'] ) && 'https' === $_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO'] ) {
$_SERVER['HTTPS'] = 'on';
}
Place an appropriate version of this pattern in wp-config.php only when the header is supplied by your controlled proxy. Do not trust arbitrary client-supplied forwarding headers; have the host or proxy provider confirm its exact behavior. The WooCommerce and WordPress guidance is documented at WooCommerce reverse-proxy HTTPS guidance and WordPress HTTPS administration.
A missing or incorrect scheme header commonly causes a redirect loop: the browser requests HTTPS, the proxy forwards HTTP, WordPress redirects to HTTPS, and the cycle repeats. Correct the proxy mode and forwarded-protocol translation before adding more redirects.
Redirect all old HTTP requests
After the HTTPS URL works, configure a permanent HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect at the web server, managed host or CDN, following that platform’s instructions. Test the bare domain and the www variant if both have DNS records or have ever been published. Choose one canonical hostname and make the other redirect to it rather than allowing two independently cached storefronts.
Check these combinations separately:
http://bare domain to the canonical HTTPS hostname.http://wwwhostname to the canonical HTTPS hostname, when it exists.- Direct HTTPS requests to product, cart, checkout, account and admin paths.
- Legacy links containing query strings, language paths or campaign parameters.
WooCommerce cautions that a blanket constant-SSL approach can interfere with caching on some sites. Prefer the redirect mechanism supported by your host or CDN, then measure the result with your normal cache and performance checks. A redirect should change the scheme and, if necessary, the hostname once—not bounce through several intermediate URLs.

A secure page can still show a browser warning when it requests an image, stylesheet, JavaScript file, font, iframe or embedded media URL beginning with http://. The browser may block active content or display an insecure-content warning even though the page itself is HTTPS.

- Open the affected page and inspect the browser console for the exact insecure URL.
- Identify whether the URL comes from a theme setting, a WooCommerce product image, a page-builder field, custom CSS, a script enqueue, an embedded form or stored post content.
- Replace the hard-coded
http://address with the matchinghttps://address when that resource supports HTTPS. Keep the hostname and path unchanged. - Update reusable templates and database content rather than editing only the one rendered page. Take a backup before any search-and-replace operation.
- Purge relevant page, object and CDN caches, then reload the page in a private window and recheck the console.
Do not assume every warning is a WordPress URL problem. WooCommerce notes that reverse-proxy misconfiguration can prevent WordPress from updating asset URLs automatically. If newly generated links still use HTTP, return to the forwarded-protocol check instead of repeatedly replacing content.
Force secure logins and administration when appropriate
Once server HTTPS and proxy detection are correct, WordPress documents this setting for forcing logins and administration over SSL:
define( 'FORCE_SSL_ADMIN', true );
Add it in wp-config.php according to WordPress’s configuration guidance, and test an administrator login in a private window. Do not enable it as a substitute for a working certificate or proxy configuration; doing so can make the dashboard inaccessible when WordPress cannot recognize the secure request.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Use a staged checklist after the migration. Test while logged out and, where relevant, in a customer account.
- Run the Qualys SSL Labs SSL Server Test and review certificate validity, hostname coverage, protocol errors and the public endpoint’s configuration.
- Inspect the browser certificate and developer-console network requests on the home page and a product page.
- Add a product to the cart, change quantity, remove it, and confirm cart fragments and totals load without mixed-content or redirect errors.
- Open checkout, enter validation data without submitting an unnecessary live order, and verify that every checkout resource is HTTPS.
- Sign in, register a test customer if your store permits it, open the account area and test logout.
- Sign in to /wp-admin, edit a noncritical item and confirm media and AJAX requests remain secure.
- Run a controlled payment test according to the gateway’s test mode. Check both the outbound checkout request and the gateway’s return, webhook or callback URL.
- Open Tools > Site Health and review the HTTPS status. WordPress documents the Site Health screen at Site Health documentation.
- Repeat the key URL checks from a second network or device to catch cached redirects, DNS differences or a proxy edge that the first test did not reach.
Keep a short record of the canonical hostname, certificate renewal owner, proxy settings and the date of the successful test. That information makes the next renewal or host migration safer.

Troubleshoot common WooCommerce HTTPS failures
ssl_error_rx_record_too_long
This normally indicates that the HTTPS request reached a server or virtual host returning plain HTTP, or that the certificate and 443 configuration are missing. Recheck the certificate activation, the port-443 listener and the Apache virtual host or Nginx server block. Confirm that both WordPress URL fields use the hostname served by that virtual host. Ask the host to inspect the TLS endpoint rather than changing plugins or content first. WooCommerce’s diagnostic steps are at the SSL error guide.
Endless redirect loop
First determine where TLS ends. If a proxy terminates HTTPS and forwards HTTP, WordPress must receive a trusted HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO: https signal translated to $_SERVER['HTTPS'] = 'on'. Check that the proxy is not adding conflicting scheme headers and that the origin is not redirecting an already-correct internal request. Temporarily disable extra redirect rules, test one canonical hostname, then reintroduce the required rule once the scheme is detected correctly.
Mixed-content warnings remain
Use the console to locate each remaining HTTP resource. Correct theme, image, script, stylesheet and embedded URLs, then purge caches. If WordPress continues generating HTTP links for new content, investigate the reverse-proxy header and WordPress’s SSL detection instead of making repeated manual replacements.
Checkout or gateway return fails
Verify that the checkout page, the gateway’s configured return URL and any webhook or callback endpoint all use HTTPS and the canonical hostname. Use the gateway’s own requirements and test mode to identify whether the failure occurs before payment, during the hand-off or on return. A valid certificate is necessary for many integrations, but review the store’s wider PCI obligations separately; WooCommerce explicitly says SSL alone is not PCI compliance. See the security guidance at WooCommerce security FAQ.
Administration becomes inaccessible after a proxy change
Review the proxy’s TLS mode and forwarded-protocol configuration with the host or proxy provider. WooCommerce notes that some Cloudflare configurations can block the admin area. Restore the last known-good proxy mode or temporarily bypass the proxy for diagnosis, then correct the origin’s HTTPS detection before enabling forced secure administration.
Operate HTTPS after launch
- Assign certificate renewal ownership and monitor expiry notifications; an expired certificate can take down checkout even when WordPress files are unchanged.
- Document which service terminates TLS and which service serves the origin certificate.
- Keep HTTP redirects, canonical-host rules and proxy headers under configuration control so a theme or plugin update cannot silently replace them.
- Repeat the storefront, cart, checkout, account and admin smoke tests after certificate renewal, DNS changes, CDN changes and major WooCommerce updates.
- Check Site Health and browser-console errors whenever a new integration adds an external script, image, iframe or payment return URL.
The reliable sequence is certificate and 443 configuration, WordPress URL migration, proxy and redirect handling, mixed-content cleanup, then end-to-end payment testing. Treat each layer as a separate checkpoint and the HTTPS change becomes reversible, diagnosable and safe for shoppers.
