The announcement establishes Sony’s plan, but the reporting cited here does not verify the exact date the studio stopped operating or confirm that the closure was completed.
Is PlayStation shutting down Bluepoint Games?
Sony confirmed the planned closure to Game Developer on February 19, 2026. In an employee email reproduced by Gematsu, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, wrote: “As a result, we will be closing Bluepoint Games in March.” That is an announced timetable, not independent confirmation of the studio’s final operating date.
Sony’s spokesperson described Bluepoint as “an incredibly talented team” and thanked its staff for their “passion, creativity and craftmanship.” The statement acknowledged the team’s contribution but did not give a specific final day or report how the closure would be carried out.
Why is Sony closing Bluepoint Games?
Sony framed the decision as the result of a business review. In the employee email reproduced by Gematsu, Hulst said: “Rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds are making it harder to build games sustainably.” These are Sony’s stated reasons; the cited reporting does not provide an independent audit or quantify those pressures.

The available reporting does not establish that one canceled game, Sony’s live-service strategy, or any other single event caused the closure. Bluepoint’s live-service God of War project was reportedly canceled in January 2025, according to Game Developer, but the reporting does not demonstrate that the cancellation directly led to Sony’s decision.

Sony’s 2021 acquisition announcement described Bluepoint as a 70-person team and the 16th studio to join PlayStation Studios. Then-SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan said the acquisition reflected Sony’s focus on investing in creative teams it believed could deliver “world-class gaming experiences.”
