Horizon Hunters Gathering is Guerrilla’s upcoming cooperative action game for PS5 and PC (Steam), built around teams of up to three Hunters taking on machine hunts. It was announced on February 5, 2026, and the current official PlayStation page still lists no release date. The title’s visuals differ from earlier Horizon games in the official materials, but Guerrilla has not published a written explanation of the art direction in the sources reviewed.
What is Horizon Hunters Gathering?
Guerrilla describes the game as a canon Horizon story centered on cooperative machine hunting. Game Director Arjan Bak called it “a cooperative action game (developed by Guerrilla for PS5 and PC) that lets up to three players team up as heroic Hunters to protect a world under threat from deadly machines.” The story takes place after Horizon Forbidden West, and PlayStation says it is designed to work as a standalone experience.

Rather than centering on one hero’s open-world journey, the announced structure sends teams into missions. Players choose Hunters with different combat styles and weapons, then use roles and rogue-lite perks to shape a build for a hunt. The announcement also described a narrative campaign and a social hub for preparation and customization.
How do the announced modes work?
Machine Incursion
This mission mode pits Hunters against waves of machines emerging from underground gateways, culminating in a boss fight.

Cauldron Descent
This is a longer, multi-stage trial with changing rooms and optional hidden rewards. The initial announcement positioned it as a more extended challenge than a single wave-based encounter.
These are the two modes named in the February 2026 announcement. Playtest updates have described additional content, but those development-stage details should not be treated as a confirmed final launch lineup.

What is known about the art style?
The official trailer and screenshots show a visual presentation that looks different from the earlier Horizon games. The official text reviewed does not provide a detailed comparison or state why Guerrilla chose this direction. In particular, there is no published explanation here attributing the change to multiplayer readability, performance, or a different target audience.
Which platforms, online features and solo options are listed?
The current US PlayStation product page lists PS5 and PC via Steam, with crossplay, matchmaking and up to three online players. Cross-progression is listed when players are signed in and saving with the same PlayStation account. The page also says solo play is supported, with two Hunter NPCs helping during missions.

The US FAQ says a PlayStation Plus Essential-or-higher membership is required for online play. That is the requirement stated on the US page; players in other regions should check their local PlayStation listing for applicable terms.
When does Horizon Hunters Gathering release?
No release date has been announced on the current official US PlayStation page. It says more release information will be shared later. PlayStation mentions upcoming playtests but does not give a new date there, so no specific launch window is confirmed in the reviewed official materials.

What has Guerrilla shown since the announcement?
In a May 5, 2026 update, Guerrilla described a second closed playtest scheduled for May 22–25, following a small test at the end of February. The update reported new Hunters Ensa and Shadow, a playable Episode, higher difficulty options for Machine Incursion, a region called Breakers’ Bounty, and Hunter NPC assistance in Solo Mode during Episode or Machine Incursion. These were details for that playtest, not a guarantee of the final release feature set.

The announced contrast is mainly one of structure: prior Horizon entries emphasize a solo narrative journey, while Hunters Gathering is designed around repeatable team hunts, distinct Hunter roles and build-shaping perks. That is a comparison of the announced approach, not a hands-on assessment of the unfinished game. Its final mission variety, progression, and how its combat feels across solo and co-op play remain to be established.
