The PS4 Slim is Sony’s smaller, lighter redesign of the standard PlayStation 4, not a separate higher-resolution model. Its CUH-2000-series hardware supports HDR output, but Sony’s specifications do not establish 4K game rendering or real-world performance. It makes sense for someone seeking a compact PS4; when buying one now, verify the exact model, storage, condition and included accessories rather than relying on old launch prices.
What is the PS4 Slim?
“PS4 Slim” is the common name for Sony’s redesigned standard PS4 in the CUH-2000 series. Sony’s 2016 announcement called it the “new slimmer and lighter PlayStation®4,” rather than giving it a separate official product name. Sony said the redesign reduced volume by more than 30% compared with previous models. Those are company-published comparisons, not independent measurements. Sony’s 2016 announcement describes the launch and its comparisons.

Does the PS4 Slim support HDR?
Yes. Sony said HDR support applies to all PS4 systems, including the slimmer model. HDR can expand the range of brightness and color a compatible display can reproduce; Sony described it as enabling the reproduction of brightness and darkness across a wider range of colors. HDR is not a claim that the console renders games at 4K. You need a compatible HDR display and content to benefit from HDR output.

Is the PS4 Slim 4K?
No: do not interpret HDR support as 4K game rendering. The Slim’s listed graphics specification is 1.84 TFLOPS; PlayStation lists 4.20 TFLOPS for the PS4 Pro. These are published hardware figures, not a promise of proportionally faster or better performance in every game. If 4K output or Pro-specific enhancements are central to your choice, compare the actual console model and the games and display features you want, rather than treating Slim and Pro as interchangeable.
PS4 Slim vs PS4 Pro: which should you choose?
| Consideration | PS4 Slim (CUH-2000) | PS4 Pro (CUH-7000 family) |
|---|---|---|
| Published graphics figure | 1.84 TFLOPS | 4.20 TFLOPS, listed by PlayStation |
| Best fit | A compact standard PS4 for playing PS4 games | A buyer prioritizing Pro’s greater published graphics capability and compatible enhancements |
| Storage, price and condition | Check the specific unit and local listing | Check the specific unit and local listing |
| Current value comparison | Not established by Sony’s specifications; compare condition-adjusted local listings | |
The Slim is the straightforward choice if a smaller standard PS4 suits your setup and you do not need Pro-focused features. A Pro may suit a buyer seeking its greater listed graphics capability, but the TFLOPS figures alone cannot predict the result in a particular game. Current prices and value depend on local market, condition and bundle contents.

How much storage does a PS4 Slim have?
Sony listed 500GB and 1TB configurations. Storage capacity is worth verifying because a listing may omit it or describe it imprecisely. Sony’s release listed the 500GB model at launch; its listed launch-price table also gave a Japanese launch price for the 1TB model. Those historical launch details do not establish current availability or resale prices.
What changed from earlier PS4 models?
Sony reported that the CUH-2000 redesign weighed 25% less than CUH-1000 and 16% less than CUH-1200. It also reported power consumption reductions of more than 34% against CUH-1000 and 28% against CUH-1200. Sony’s environmental page labels the comparison information as of November 2016. Treat these as Sony’s stated comparisons, not independent tests of a console you are considering. Sony’s environmental information gives the company’s comparison context.

What to check before buying a PS4 Slim
- Model: Confirm the CUH-2000-series model code on the console or listing; do not assume every PS4 revision is the Slim.
- Storage: Verify whether it is the 500GB or 1TB configuration.
- Condition: Check the seller’s description of the console’s condition and what, if anything, has been tested. Sony’s specifications cannot establish the condition of a used unit.
- Included items: Confirm whether a controller, power cable, HDMI cable and other accessories are included. Contents can vary by seller, region and bundle.
- Disc drive: The listed hardware has a read-only Blu-ray/DVD drive; confirm that the specific unit’s drive works if physical games or movies matter to you.
- Price and region: Compare current listings where you live, accounting for condition and bundle contents. Sony’s 2016 prices are not current market guidance.
- Display expectations: If HDR matters, check that your display and the content you plan to use support it; do not buy the Slim expecting 4K game rendering.
Verdict
The PS4 Slim is a compact standard PS4 with two Sony-listed storage options, HDR support and clearly documented core specifications. It is a sensible candidate when you want a smaller PS4 and a particular listing checks out. Choose with realistic expectations: HDR is not 4K rendering, published hardware figures are not game benchmarks, and whether a used or refurbished unit is worth its price depends on its condition and local market.
