Sony’s patent describes a game controller with configurable optical input surfaces that can recognize touch, taps, swipes, presses, pinches and joystick-like inputs. It includes a buttonless configuration, but does not announce a new controller or connect the design to the PS6. The patent was filed in 2023 and granted in January 2026; whether any version will become a product is unknown.

What Sony’s controller patent describes

US patent US12533573B2, titled “Devices and methods for a game controller,” is assigned to Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC. The patent record lists application 18/168451, filed February 13, 2023, and a grant date of January 27, 2026.

At its core, the design uses one or more optical sensors to read input from surfaces on a controller body. A controller interprets that input and sends a control signal. The specification describes several kinds of input:

  • Touch and tap
  • Swipe and press
  • Pinch
  • Joystick-like movement

It also describes detecting a player’s grip and shifting input locations to suit it, as well as letting users select or adjust where controls appear. Input surfaces could be placed on different parts of the controller. One described option, called pretouch detection, can sense a finger approaching a surface before it makes contact. These are possibilities in the patent, not a confirmed feature list for a finished controller.

Does it mean Sony is making a buttonless PS6 controller?

No. The patent does not identify a PS6, provide a release date or announce a retail product. GamesRadar’s February 2, 2026 coverage connects the idea to a possible future PlayStation controller, but also cautions that patents do not necessarily become products. The connection to a PS6 remains speculation.

“Buttonless” is also only one configuration in the patent. It describes assigning familiar button or directional-pad functions to regions of a sensor surface, but says those surfaces can also work alongside physical buttons. The filing therefore does not establish that Sony intends to remove every physical control.

What touch controls could change—and what remains unknown

Configurable input locations could let a player arrange controls around a preferred grip or hand size. The patent frames flexibility and accommodating different hand sizes as design aims. It does not provide usability trials or measurements showing that the concept improves comfort, accessibility or performance.

TechRadar’s February 2, 2026 coverage discusses possible accessibility implications while noting a basic trade-off: touch regions may not provide the physical feel of buttons. In practice, a player may value controls they can locate by touch without looking; a configurable surface may offer flexibility but could make control positions harder to find or invite accidental input. The patent does not establish how accurately the sensors would distinguish intended inputs, whether the design would work with particular games or consoles, or how it would feel in use.

The patent’s background states: “There exists a desire for game controllers to allow for different configurations, and accommodate hand sizes without having to customize or manufacture controller size.” That is the patent’s description of a design motivation, not evidence of a tested outcome.

How it differs from a controller you can buy

Sony’s DualSense is a familiar example of a PlayStation controller with physical inputs; it is not the patented buttonless concept. A useful comparison with any configurable or accessibility-focused controller would ask:

PlayStation DualSense Edge Wireless Controller
  • Aim and move with precision by swapping in fresh stick modules* so you’re always playing with equipment that’s in great shape. Plus, three types of changeable stick caps help you stay comfortable in-game without sacrificing grip or stability.
  • Mappable back buttons The DualSense Edge wireless controller’s two swappable sets of back buttons can be configured to any other button input, so you’ve always got game-changing actions and essential controls at your fingertips.
  • Adjustable trigger lengths Manually set the travel distance of your left and right triggers for an optimal experience with whatever you’re playing. Fast-paced FPS? Set a shorter travel distance to shoot faster on the field. Competitive racer? Set a longer travel distance for precise throttle control on the track.
  • Remappable buttons Remap or even deactivate specific button inputs, so you can create a completely personalized control setup that’s ideal for the game at hand.
  • Quick-swap control profiles Once you’ve found your ideal control settings, you can save them to unique profiles and swap between them on-the-fly, so your favourite configurations are always ready when you are.
  • Can controls be located by touch, and what tactile feedback do they provide?
  • Can the player move or resize controls?
  • Does the layout suit different hand sizes and grip styles?
  • How does input recognition handle accidental touches?
  • Which consoles and games are compatible?
  • Is the controller an available product, rather than a patent description?

The patent does not answer those product-level questions for a finished Sony controller. Sony has also filed a separate application, US20250208720A1, “Extend the game controller functionality with virtual buttons using hand tracking”. That filing describes using multimodal signals and gestures for real or virtual buttons. It is a distinct disclosure and should not be treated as a feature of US12533573B2.
