Sony raised U.S. recommended prices for all three PS5 console models by $50 starting August 21, 2025. Those prices are now historical: a later Sony increase took effect April 2, 2026, setting the PS5 at $649.99, the Digital Edition at $599.99 and the PS5 Pro at $899.99. Sony cited a challenging economic environment in 2025; tariffs were a prominent concern in contemporaneous reporting, but Sony did not identify them as the sole cause.
What changed in the August 2025 U.S. price increase?
Sony’s August 2025 increase applied to the recommended retail prices of its three PS5 console models sold in the United States. Each went up by $50, effective August 21, 2025, according to CBS News and the Associated Press.
| Model | Before Aug. 21, 2025 | From Aug. 21, 2025 | From Apr. 2, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | $499.99 | $549.99 | $649.99 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $449.99 | $499.99 | $599.99 |
| PS5 Pro | $699.99 | $749.99 | $899.99 |
The August 2025 figures are historical U.S. recommended prices, not current prices. The latest official U.S. prices shown here come from Sony’s notice of March 27, 2026, effective April 2, 2026; retailer prices and availability can differ from Sony’s recommendations. Sony’s PlayStation Blog announcement also covers the PlayStation Portal, which is not a PS5 console model.
Why did Sony raise PS5 prices in the U.S.?
Sony’s stated explanation in August 2025 was broad, not tariff-specific. Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, wrote: “Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment.” She said the company had decided to increase U.S. recommended prices as a result. The AP report reproduced her statement.

Tariff uncertainty was part of the context reported at the time. Reuters, republished by Investing.com, described tariffs as a threat to costs and reported concerns about supply-chain disruption and material costs. AP reported that Sony was diversifying its supply chain to ease tariff impacts. WIRED cited analyst Daniel Ahmad, who viewed U.S. stockpiles and manufacturing diversification as steps to mitigate tariff effects. These reports explain the tariff pressures surrounding the increase; they should not be mistaken for Sony saying tariffs alone caused it.
When did the increase start, and did it affect games or accessories?
The new U.S. console prices took effect August 21, 2025. The AP reported that the change applied to consoles sold in the United States, while games and accessories were unchanged in that round. That qualification applies to the 2025 increase, not to every later price change or retailer offer.
