The shift may make new PlayStation releases less accessible to players who value lending, resale, collecting, or keeping a playable copy independent of a storefront. That makes “grave mistake” a defensible consumer argument, not an established fact. And while Nintendo’s current official materials do not announce a similar plan, they do not prove it will avoid one.
What Sony is changing in January 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment says it will discontinue physical game-disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. Sony’s announcement says those new games will be available digitally through PlayStation Store and at retailers; it does not say that retailers will stop selling digital games. Sony’s stated rationale is a shift in consumer preferences and the wider entertainment industry. Sony’s announcement is the primary source for the policy, but it does not set out a market-by-market schedule or quantify the effect on players.

The change is not an immediate shutdown of physical PlayStation games. Sony explicitly says games that already released, or will release before January 2028, in disc format are unaffected by this transition. The announcement does not say that those discs will stop working, nor does it establish what future hardware will support them. It concerns production of discs for new releases after the cutoff.
Why the digital numbers do not settle the argument
Sony reported that 82% of full-game units for PS4 and PS5 were digitally downloaded in Q1 FY2026. Its measure divides digitally transacted full-game units by total full-game units. That is strong evidence that downloads account for most of Sony’s reported full-game unit sales; it is not proof that every player, region, or type of game has moved on from discs. Sony’s Q1 FY2026 supplemental tables define the ratio.

A different Sony figure illustrates why the denominator matters. In Sony Group’s FY2024 Game & Network Services revenue breakdown, physical software contributed 3% of revenue, digital software 20%, and add-on content 29%. Those percentages are shares of revenue sources, not shares of game units. They should not be treated as a second estimate of how many games were sold digitally. Sony’s Corporate Report provides that revenue breakdown.
Electronic Arts estimated that digital sales made up 78% of its total units on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5 in FY2025, compared with 73% in FY2024 and 68% in FY2023. EA’s estimate combines platform-reported digital units with estimates for packaged goods. It covers one publisher across several platforms, so it is context for industry direction—not a measurement of Sony’s customers or proof that physical distribution no longer matters. EA’s SEC filing describes the estimate.

Sony also reported more than 1.706 billion cumulative PS4 and PS5 software units sold in through June 30, 2026, including physical and download-only titles, PS VR games, and bundled software. That lifetime total shows the scale of the PlayStation software business, but says nothing by itself about players’ preference for discs. Sony’s supplemental tables provide the figure and its scope.

What players could lose—and what Sony says it will preserve
A disc can function as more than a delivery method: it may be lent, resold, displayed, or kept as part of a collection. Ending discs for new releases removes those options for players who rely on physical copies, even if downloads are convenient for others. The cited company materials do not quantify how often PlayStation players resell or lend games, whether players would switch platforms over the change, or how the cutoff would affect preservation. Those outcomes are concerns to weigh, not effects measured by the figures above.

Sony says it will continue to give players choices about where to purchase new games, including retailers and PlayStation Store, while prioritizing innovation in game access. That is a choice of purchase channel, not a promise of a physical copy: Sony’s announcement says post-cutoff new releases will be digital. The distinction matters for anyone who equates buying from a retailer with owning a disc.
Is going all digital a grave mistake?
The strongest case against the decision is about the options that discs provide, not a claim that digital sales are unpopular. A high digital unit share can coexist with a meaningful role for physical software: the unit and revenue figures answer different questions, and neither establishes that the remaining disc audience is unimportant. New-release disc production also supports access routes that downloads do not replicate, especially lending and resale. The available figures do not measure the value of those routes or show how many buyers would change their behavior if they disappeared.

There are also plausible business reasons for Sony’s decision: its reported full-game unit sales are already predominantly digital, and it says it is responding to consumer and industry trends. But the announcement offers no cost, margin, market, or consumer research that would let outsiders determine whether the policy is optimal. Calling the move a “grave mistake” is therefore an argument about the value of choice and the risk of excluding physical buyers—not a conclusion established by Sony’s sales data.
Will Nintendo go all digital?
Nintendo’s official investor-relations hub points readers to company policy and sales materials, but the official material considered here does not verify a promise to keep physical releases or a decision to abandon them. Nintendo’s investor-relations hub is a source for formal company materials, not evidence of a specific future format policy.

It is reasonable to forecast that Nintendo will not copy Sony’s move soon, but that remains a forecast rather than a confirmed Nintendo position. Sony’s announced cutoff is its own policy; it does not establish what Nintendo will do with future hardware or games. Without a public Nintendo commitment, “anytime soon” cannot be assigned a reliable date.
