No: 74.9 million is not Sony’s current PlayStation 5 sales milestone. Sony Interactive Entertainment says PS5 had sold in more than 95 million units worldwide by June 30, 2026. The figures are reported as sell-in—units shipped into the market—not a direct count of consoles purchased by players.
What does the 74.9 million figure mean?
The 74.9-million figure should be treated as a historical headline, not a current total. Its exact original publication date and source are not established by the official materials available here, so it should not be attributed to a specific Sony report without verifying that report.
Sony’s financial reporting distinguishes hardware sell-in from sell-through. In its supplement for the quarter ended December 31, 2024, Sony said PS5 hardware units are disclosed on a sell-in basis and reported 9.5 million units for that quarter. That quarter’s figure is not the source confirmation for the 74.9-million cumulative claim. Sony’s FY2024 Q3 supplemental information
How many PS5s has Sony reported since then?
Sony’s later figures show how the total has moved beyond 74.9 million. The reporting periods and measures matter when comparing them:

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s company page states: “PlayStation 5 has sold-in more than 95 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2026”. Sony Group’s FY2026 Q1 supplemental information reports 93.7 million cumulative sell-in units through March 31, 2026, and 1.6 million units during that quarter. The company’s later milestone is reported on its history of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Does “sold” mean players bought that many consoles?
Not necessarily. Sell-in refers to hardware shipped into the market; it is not the same metric as sell-through, which tracks units sold to consumers. Sony publishes these measures separately, so a headline that says consoles were “sold” can blur an important distinction. Use the date, metric, scope and source together when comparing PS5 totals.
