Neowin reported on September 11, 2024, that the trailer had passed 200,000 dislikes, describing the total as changing quickly (Neowin). Push Square cited 1.6 million views and 5,600 dislikes for the PS4 Pro reveal video as a comparison point, not as a current or independently verified metric (Push Square). YouTube’s public interface does not provide a stable current dislike total in the cited reporting, so those historical figures should not be read as today’s counts.
Why did the announcement attract criticism?
The announced price became the central value question
Sony’s launch recommended retail prices were $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY including tax. The prices were announced for the November 2024 launch, not as current retail quotes. Sony’s announcement said the console would be available at those prices (Sony Interactive Entertainment, September 10, 2024). Contemporary coverage identified the cost as a prominent source of criticism.

The console was digital-only as sold
The PS5 Pro did not include a disc drive, which critics noted as part of the value debate. Players who wanted to use physical games would need to account for the separate disc-drive purchase as well as the console. The cited coverage establishes that the drive was not included; it does not establish its current price or availability.

There is no universal answer in the available facts: Sony’s announced price and the reported criticism do not prove what the console was worth to every player. A useful decision depends on what you already own and how you play:

- Consider your current console. The question is whether a mid-generation upgrade is worth the launch price for you, rather than whether the Pro is an automatic purchase for every PS5 owner.
- Factor in physical games. If you use discs, include the separate drive in your expected cost.
- Weigh the improvements you care about. Sony presented the Pro as an upgraded way to play, but the announcement and backlash reporting do not establish a value judgment that applies to all players.
Sony confirmed the November 7, 2024 release and announced launch prices in its launch announcement (Sony Interactive Entertainment, October 10, 2024). Those figures provide historical context; they should not be treated as a quote for what a retailer charges now.
