Sony’s August 20, 2025 announcement was a US price increase, not a decision to spare the United States: new recommended retail prices took effect there on August 21. The “skips the USA” framing is now outdated. Sony announced another increase on March 27, 2026, this time globally, with higher US prices effective April 2, 2026.
What Sony announced in August 2025
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s August 20, 2025 notice set new US recommended retail prices for three consoles, effective August 21. It also said PlayStation 5 accessories’ recommended retail prices were unchanged and that it had no other market price changes to announce at that time. That was a statement about the August announcement—not a promise that US prices would stay unchanged.
| US console | RRP announced August 20, 2025 | Effective date |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | $549.99 | August 21, 2025 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $499.99 | August 21, 2025 |
| PS5 Pro | $749.99 | August 21, 2025 |

The later increase included the USA
On March 27, 2026, Sony announced a global price increase for PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player. The new console prices took effect April 2, 2026, and Sony’s US figures were:
| US product | RRP announced March 27, 2026 | Effective date |

| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | April 2, 2026 |

Why did Sony raise prices?
For the March 2026 increase, Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, cited “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” Sony’s notice did not give a more specific breakdown, so it does not establish tariffs, component costs, inflation, or exchange rates as the reason.

What these prices mean for shoppers
The figures above are Sony’s recommended retail prices, not a guarantee of what every retailer charges or has in stock. Discounts, availability, and current asking prices can vary. Sony’s March 2026 notice listed prices for the US, UK, euro area, and Japan; for other territories it directed customers to local retailers or direct.playstation.com where available. Those regional prices should not be treated as simple currency conversions.
