Sony’s August 20, 2025 announcement raised the U.S. recommended prices of all three PS5 console models by $50, effective August 21. Those figures are historical: Sony announced another increase in March 2026, effective April 2. Its latest U.S. recommended prices are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro.
What changed in Sony’s August 2025 announcement?
On August 20, 2025, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced higher U.S. recommended retail prices for the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro. The changes took effect the following day. The announcement was authored by Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Vice President of Global Marketing. Sony’s August 20, 2025 announcement listed these new prices:

The prices are Sony’s recommended retail prices, not a promise that every U.S. retailer charged the same amount. Sony said accessory recommended prices were unchanged in that August announcement; that statement applies to the 2025 change, not to later pricing updates.
How much did the 2025 increase add?
The Associated Press reported that each of the three console models rose by $50 compared with its prior recommended price: the standard PS5 went from $499.99 to $549.99, the Digital Edition from $449.99 to $499.99, and the Pro from $699.99 to $749.99. These prior prices and the $50 comparisons are AP’s account of the change, rather than figures in Sony’s August price table. AP’s August 21, 2025 report covered the increase.

What are the current U.S. PS5 prices?
The August 2025 prices are no longer Sony’s latest U.S. recommendations. On March 27, 2026, Sony announced a second increase, effective April 2, 2026. The current recommended prices in that post are:

Why did Sony raise prices?
For the August 2025 U.S. increase, Tomatis cited a “challenging economic environment” and said Sony had made a difficult decision. In March 2026, she referred to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” and said the increase was necessary to keep delivering gaming experiences. Sony’s stated explanations were broad economic pressures; neither announcement named a more specific cause.
AP discussed tariffs and supply pressures as wider context in its reporting, but those are not specific causes Sony identified in its announcements. Its March 27, 2026 report described the later increases as citing global economic pressures: AP’s March 27 report.

What the price announcements tell you when choosing a model
The announcements establish the models’ recommended prices, but they do not provide a technical comparison of their features. Use the price list as a starting point, then compare the specific model’s capabilities and the retailer’s actual offer before buying. In particular, don’t assume that the Digital Edition, standard PS5, and PS5 Pro are interchangeable just because their prices appear together in the announcement.
