Sony Interactive Entertainment completed its acquisition of Bungie on July 15, 2022, making the Destiny developer a wholly owned Sony subsidiary. The deal was commonly reported as worth $3.6 billion, although Sony described the total consideration at closing as approximately $3.7 billion, including employee incentives. Bungie said it would retain creative independence and keep publishing games across platforms, so Destiny 2 did not become a PlayStation exclusive.
Did Sony’s acquisition of Bungie close?
Yes. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Group, acquired 100% of Bungie, Inc. on July 15, 2022. Bungie became a wholly owned Sony subsidiary. Sony had announced the transaction on January 31, 2022. Sony’s closing announcement confirmed that the deal was complete.
Why was the deal called a $3.6 billion acquisition?
The $3.6 billion figure became the widely reported shorthand, but it does not describe a single cash payment to Bungie’s operating budget. Sony’s closing announcement put total consideration at approximately $3.7 billion after customary adjustments, including the purchase price and committed employee incentives.
Sony’s subsequent securities report identified approximately $2.522 billion as purchase consideration and approximately $1.179 billion as deferred payments and retention incentives, mainly for employee shareholders. The report’s figures reflect its stated currency conversion. The different headline totals reflect rounding and what the figures include; they should not be read as the price of Bungie’s intellectual property alone. Sony’s quarterly securities report provides the breakdown.

What did Sony acquire, and why?
The acquisition brought Bungie’s Destiny franchise and its experience building and operating large-scale live-service games into Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony also pointed to Bungie’s technology and expertise as valuable to its broader games business. Its stated rationale included applying that experience across Sony’s live-service ambitions—not a promise that every PlayStation game would adopt that model. Sony’s financial statements and investor materials described Bungie’s live-service knowledge as part of the deal’s strategic value.
Did Destiny 2 become a PlayStation exclusive?
No. At the time of the acquisition, Bungie said Destiny 2 would remain multiplatform, with cross-play, cross-save and support for players on Steam, Xbox and other supported platforms continuing. The acquisition did not require players on Xbox or PC to move to PlayStation. Bungie also said the transaction would not immediately remove platform access or third-party companion-app support. Bungie’s player FAQ set out those commitments.

Those were Bungie’s stated plans for its games and players at the time; they should not be treated as a permanent legal guarantee about the platform plans of every future Bungie project.
Was Bungie still independent?
Not in ownership: Bungie became part of Sony. But Bungie and Sony presented the studio as creatively independent, with Bungie continuing to self-publish and develop games for multiple platforms. The clearest description is that Bungie became a Sony-owned but deliberately independent subsidiary. At closing, CEO Pete Parsons remained in place. Bungie’s acquisition announcement explained its stated creative and publishing model.

What changed after the deal?
The original rationale was a bet on Bungie’s live-service expertise; later events brought significant changes, but do not by themselves establish that the acquisition caused them.
Restructuring and project plans
Bungie later described pressure from rapid expansion, an industry downturn, problems with Destiny 2: Lightfall, and the need to give The Final Shape and Marathon more time. It also said one incubation project would spin out into a new studio within PlayStation Studios. Bungie’s New Path announcement outlined those developments.

In May 2026, Bungie announced that the June 9, 2026 update would be the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 and that the studio would turn toward incubating its next games. This later roadmap change should not be mistaken for an immediate consequence announced when Sony bought Bungie. Bungie’s 2026 announcement has the current details.
