Sony’s PlayStation Technical Presentation revealed PS5 Pro: price, specs and what happened

Sony’s September 2024 technical presentation was initially announced without naming PS5 Pro. The nine-minute Mark Cerny broadcast ultimately revealed the upgraded console, its $699.99 launch MSRP and its graphics-focused features.

Sony announced a nine-minute PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation on September 9, 2024, after weeks of PS5 Pro speculation. Hosted by PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny, the presentation aired on September 10—and formally revealed the PlayStation 5 Pro.

Sony positioned the upgraded console as a way to deliver higher visual quality and smoother performance without the usual choice between fidelity and performance modes. It launched on November 7, 2024, at a historical U.S. MSRP of $699.99.

What Sony announced on September 9, 2024

Sony’s original announcement did not explicitly name PS5 Pro. It confirmed a short technical broadcast focused on the PS5 and “innovations in gaming technology.” The presentation details were:

Why the event was linked to PS5 Pro

PS5 Pro was not confirmed when Sony announced the broadcast. However, several clues made a hardware reveal a reasonable expectation.

Cerny was the natural presenter for a technical explanation of a new PlayStation system, and the event’s nine-minute runtime suggested a focused engineering presentation rather than a conventional State of Play full of game announcements. The announcement also arrived during a period of intense PS5 Pro reporting and speculation.

Sony’s 30th-anniversary campaign had added to the discussion. Fans and contemporary reports interpreted elements of the anniversary imagery as possible references to a revised PlayStation design, although Sony did not officially describe that artwork as a PS5 Pro confirmation. Contemporary coverage from GameSpot captured that pre-reveal context.

In other words, the September 9 post pointed toward PS5 Pro, but it was still speculation until the presentation aired.

What the presentation revealed

On September 10, Sony introduced PlayStation 5 Pro. It was an enhanced PS5 model, not a new console generation. The system kept the PS5 software ecosystem, user interface and network services, while adding more graphics performance and image-reconstruction technology.

Sony’s headline technical claims were:

  • 67% more Compute Units than the standard PS5 GPU
  • 28% faster memory
  • Up to 45% faster rendering
  • Ray-tracing performance at roughly twice and, in some cases, up to three times the standard PS5’s rate
  • A machine-learning upscaler called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR

These figures were Sony’s claims, not universal frame-rate guarantees. “Up to 45% faster rendering” does not mean every game runs 45% faster, and the ray-tracing comparison can vary by game and implementation.

What PSSR was designed to do

PSSR uses machine learning to reconstruct a sharper image from a lower-resolution internal render. The practical goal was to make it easier for developers to offer high image quality and higher frame rates together.

That distinction matters. PSSR was not a promise that every PS5 game would automatically receive the same visual upgrade. The quality and usefulness of the result depended on the game, its rendering settings and developer support.

PS5 Pro hardware and features

The launch configuration included a 2TB SSD, one DualSense wireless controller and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. Sony listed support for VRR and 8K gaming, as well as Wi-Fi 7 in territories where that standard was supported.

PS5 Pro did not include a built-in disc drive. Buyers who wanted to use physical PS5 or PS4 discs had to purchase Sony’s compatible Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive separately. This made the advertised $699.99 launch price particularly important to interpret: it was the price of the digital-only console, not a complete disc-based package.

The console supported existing PlayStation accessories, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, the Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore.

Which games benefited?

Sony used the PS5 Pro Enhanced label for games with specific improvements. Examples listed around launch included:

  • Alan Wake 2
  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows
  • Demon’s Souls
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered
  • The Crew Motorfest
  • The First Descendant

Enhancements varied by title. A PS5 Pro Enhanced game might use the extra GPU capacity, ray tracing or PSSR differently from another game, and the label did not establish one universal resolution or frame-rate target.

Game Boost and backward compatibility

PS5 Pro’s Game Boost feature could apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. Sony said it could stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games. Select PS4 games could also benefit from Enhanced Image Quality.

Game Boost was not a guarantee of a dramatic improvement in every title. Results depended on how each game behaved with the console’s additional hardware and software features.

Who was PS5 Pro for?

PS5 Pro was most relevant to players who already owned, or planned to buy, a capable 4K display with a high refresh rate and VRR. Those players were more likely to notice improvements in sharpness, ray-traced effects and frame-rate consistency.

It was a less obvious choice for owners of older 1080p televisions, buyers primarily concerned with price, or players who did not care about ray tracing and high-fidelity graphics modes. The console did not introduce exclusive games or a separate software generation.

Digital-only players avoided the disc-drive limitation, while collectors and anyone with a physical PS4 or PS5 library needed to budget for the optional drive as well. Existing PS5 owners who were satisfied with their current image quality also had a reasonable reason to wait and see how many of their preferred games received meaningful enhancements.

What Sony did not promise

  • PS5 Pro was not a next-generation PlayStation console.
  • “Up to 45% faster rendering” was not a universal 45% frame-rate increase.
  • PSSR and other enhancements did not apply identically to every game.
  • Game Boost did not guarantee a major upgrade for all 8,500-plus compatible PS4 games.
  • The console did not include a disc drive.
  • 8K support did not mean that every game rendered natively at 8K.

The most accurate way to describe PS5 Pro is as a premium, mid-generation PS5 upgrade focused primarily on graphics performance and image quality.

Update: Sony announced the technical presentation on September 9, 2024. The presentation aired and revealed PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024; this article is written as a retrospective rather than a current event preview.
