SSRTGI is not engine-level hardware ray tracing. It is a screen-space, depth-based post-processing effect, so it can make an older game look more cinematic but cannot reproduce the complete lighting, reflections, or global illumination of native DXR or path tracing.

What NVIDIA Freestyle SSRTGI does
SSRTGI stands for Screen Space Ray Traced Global Illumination. NVIDIA introduced it as an advanced depth-based Freestyle filter alongside SSAO and Dynamic DOF. The filter was developed with ReShade creator Pascal Gilcher and is based on a modified version of his “Ray Tracing ReShade Filter.” See NVIDIA’s original announcement for the background and original setup method: NVIDIA’s Freestyle and SSRTGI announcement.
In practical terms, SSRTGI analyzes the rendered image and available depth information to strengthen local shading. It may make these areas look more grounded:

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
- Contact shadows beneath characters, furniture, and props.
- Creases and intersections where surfaces meet.
- Dark corners and enclosed spaces.
- Indirect-light contrast and depth separation.
- Environmental geometry that otherwise appears flat.
The result can resemble a lighting remaster, especially in older games, but the effect is an approximation. “Ray traced” describes the filter’s lighting approach and visual goal; it does not mean that the game has gained a ray-tracing renderer.
SSRTGI versus real ray tracing
Because SSRTGI is screen-space, it is limited to information visible in the current frame and available through the game’s depth buffer. It generally cannot reliably account for geometry outside the camera view, light travelling from another room, off-screen reflections, physically accurate refraction, or complete multi-bounce illumination.
By contrast, native DXR or path tracing is integrated into the game engine. The engine can use scene geometry, materials, lights, and acceleration structures to calculate effects that are not visible in the current frame. NVIDIA’s description of Portal with RTX illustrates this distinction: full ray tracing can account for light from behind the player or from another room.

What you need
- A Windows gaming PC with a compatible NVIDIA GPU.
- A current NVIDIA graphics driver.
- The current NVIDIA App, or a compatible older GeForce Experience installation.
- The NVIDIA in-game overlay enabled.
- A game and rendering mode recognized as compatible with Freestyle.
Do not assume that every RTX card supports SSRTGI in every title, or that an RTX card is universally required. NVIDIA’s public documentation describes Freestyle as a supported-game feature, and availability depends on the title, renderer, driver, NVIDIA App build, and filter implementation. NVIDIA currently documents Freestyle/RTX Filters in the NVIDIA App and says Freestyle filters cover more than 1,200 games, but that broad figure does not guarantee that SSRTGI appears in every one of them. Check the current supported-games and applications list.
How to enable SSRTGI
- Install or update NVIDIA software. Install the NVIDIA App, update the graphics driver, and restart Windows if requested.
- Enable the overlay. Open the NVIDIA App and make sure its in-game overlay or game-filter feature is enabled. Menu names can change between application versions.
- Confirm game support. Check NVIDIA’s supported-games page. General Freestyle support does not necessarily mean that every depth-based filter is available.
- Launch the game normally. Start it through its usual launcher or storefront and load into actual gameplay. The title screen or launcher may not expose the required game image and depth data.
- Open Freestyle. Press Alt+F3. NVIDIA’s original instructions use this shortcut. If nothing happens, open the NVIDIA overlay with Alt+Z and look for Game Filter; also check the overlay hotkey settings for conflicts.
- Add the filter. Choose an empty filter slot or Add Filter, open the filter list, and select SSRTGI if it is offered.
- Compare and save. Toggle the filter off and on, adjust it gradually, and save a per-game preset if your NVIDIA App version provides that option.
The precise labels and available controls may differ between the NVIDIA App and older GeForce Experience versions. If SSRTGI is absent from the list, do not assume that a hidden setting or unofficial workaround will make it safe or functional.
How to tune SSRTGI without making the game worse
Start at the default settings and increase the effect in small steps. The best setting is the lowest strength that gives objects convincing contact and local shading. There is no universal value: the appropriate result depends on the game, resolution, renderer, scene, and personal taste.

- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
- Check both interiors and bright outdoor areas.
- Inspect corners, furniture, character feet, walls, and object intersections.
- Watch foliage, fences, hair, particles, reflections, and transparent surfaces.
- Test while moving the camera rather than judging only a still screenshot.
- Disable the filter if shadows become crushed, halos appear, or the image becomes muddy or grainy.
SSRTGI can look impressive in comparison screenshots while being distracting during normal play. Compare the filtered and unfiltered image at the same resolution and in the same scene before keeping it enabled.

Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Alt+F3 does nothing | The overlay is disabled or the shortcut conflicts with another application. | Enable the NVIDIA overlay, check hotkeys, then try Alt+Z and open Game Filter. |
| “A supported game is required” | NVIDIA does not recognize the title or current rendering path as supported. | Check NVIDIA’s support guidance and supported-games list, then test another known Freestyle title. |
| Freestyle opens but SSRTGI is missing | The title may support general filters without exposing usable depth data, or the current renderer, app build, anti-cheat, or update may block the filter. | Update the driver and NVIDIA App, restart the game, and test another supported title or renderer where the game officially allows it. |
| The image is too dark | The effect is exaggerating ambient occlusion or indirect-light contrast. | Reduce the effect or disable it, then compare neutral surfaces and shadow detail. |
| Shadows flicker | Screen-space depth processing is unstable around thin geometry, foliage, transparency, reflections, rapid movement, or temporal anti-aliasing. | Try a different officially supported renderer or remove the filter. |
| Menus, HUD elements, or subtitles look wrong | The filter may be applied before or after UI compositing differently in that title. | Check gameplay, menus, subtitles, and photo mode separately. |
| Performance falls | SSRTGI adds a real-time post-processing workload. | Compare average FPS, frame-time consistency, GPU usage, and input response with the filter on and off. |
NVIDIA’s documented response to the supported-game warning is that Freestyle requires a supported game. If other supported titles work but one game does not, treat that as a title-specific compatibility issue rather than evidence that your GPU is faulty.
Do not rename the executable
Community discussions have suggested renaming an unsupported game’s executable so NVIDIA software mistakes it for a supported title. This is not a normal NVIDIA-supported fix. It can break launchers and updates, produce incorrect depth data, cause crashes or visual corruption, and create problems with anti-cheat systems or game rules. Avoid it, particularly for online games.

SSRTGI and online games
NVIDIA Freestyle is an official feature for supported games, but that does not guarantee that every publisher or anti-cheat system permits every overlay filter. Policies can change. For competitive or protected multiplayer games, check the publisher’s current rules before using it, and do not use executable-renaming or other injection workarounds.
Alternatives to Freestyle SSRTGI
Native ray tracing
If a game includes ray-tracing options, use those when you want engine-aware lighting, reflections, shadows, or global illumination. Native settings can expose separate effects such as ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, reflections, and shadows; NVIDIA’s Fortnite RTX documentation provides an example.

ReShade offers deeper shader-level customization and is the ecosystem from which the original RTGI work emerged. It requires separate installation and configuration, and compatibility and anti-cheat considerations are more complicated. Verify the current licensing and availability of any RTGI shader before installing it. The official starting point is reshade.me.

RTX Remix or an official remaster
For selected older games, RTX Remix or an official remaster can provide substantially deeper renderer integration than a post-processing filter. These options can alter lighting, materials, reflections, refraction, and shadows, but they are available only for compatible projects and games.
Game-specific lighting mods
A native lighting mod may produce a better result because it can change materials, shaders, lights, and world settings. The trade-off is more complicated installation and version-specific maintenance.
Should you buy an NVIDIA GPU for SSRTGI?
Usually, no. SSRTGI is a useful extra feature for someone who already owns a compatible NVIDIA setup, but buying an expensive graphics card solely for a screen-space filter is difficult to justify. Consider a GPU for broader needs such as native ray tracing, DLSS, RTX Remix, or general gaming performance instead.

Verdict
SSRTGI is worth trying when it appears in NVIDIA Freestyle and your goal is stronger, more cinematic local lighting without modifying game files. It can improve contact shading and depth in older or non-ray-traced games, but it is not a universal “add RTX” switch. Availability is title- and version-dependent, performance must be checked on your own hardware, and artifacts are a normal limitation of screen-space processing.
