Sony’s US PS5 price increase is no longer something buyers can avoid by acting before a deadline: the new recommended prices took effect on April 2, 2026. Sony set the PS5 at $649.99, the PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99, and the PS5 Pro at $899.99. Check current retailer prices and stock before buying; Sony’s announced prices do not establish what a retailer charges today.
What Sony announced—and when it took effect
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the US price changes on March 27, 2026, with new recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026. That effective date has passed. The original “act fast” window is closed; a lower price may still be available through a retailer, but it cannot be assumed from Sony’s announcement.
Sony attributed the change to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President, Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: “We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.” Sony’s March 27 announcement lists the US schedule and effective date.
New US recommended prices compared with Sony’s prior schedule
The table compares Sony’s announced US recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026, with its prior US schedule announced August 20, 2025, and effective August 21, 2025. Each listed console price is $100 higher in the newer schedule. These are Sony’s recommended prices, not a record of every retailer’s prices or promotions.

The earlier figures are from Sony’s August 20, 2025 US price announcement. The comparison is between the two announced recommended-price schedules; it does not show that every store charged the earlier price or that promotions continued uninterrupted.
What to do if you are shopping now
- Compare the current checkout price at retailers you trust, including shipping and any applicable tax. The recommended price is not a guarantee of a retailer’s live price.
- Confirm the exact model and whether it is new, refurbished, or bundled. Sony’s price announcement does not compare console features, performance, storage, or which model suits a particular buyer.
- Check stock and the seller before placing an order. The announcement does not establish present-day availability, retailer inventory, or transaction prices.

PlayStation Portal is a separate product
Sony also listed the PlayStation Portal remote player at a US recommended price of $249.99, effective April 2, 2026. Portal is a remote player, not a PS5 console, so it should not be treated as another console price in the comparison above.
