The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack is a bonus side experience, not an adaptation of the film’s plot or a replacement for Sonic X Shadow Generations’ main Shadow campaign. Producer Shun Nakamura described it as a way to play as a movie-inspired Shadow in a Tokyo setting while keeping the game’s original Shadow story separate.
What the producer says the Movie Pack is for
In a September 24, 2024 interview with PlayStation.Blog, Sonic series producer Shun Nakamura explained that the game was made for established Sonic players as well as people who might discover the series through its films. With the game and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arriving close together, the teams saw an opportunity to connect those audiences. Work on the movie-related content had begun the previous autumn.

Nakamura said the timing could encourage players to try the game, get to know Shadow, see the film, and then return to the game. He summarized the pack’s place in the title this way: “Basically, it should be positioned as bonus content.” Read the interview with Nakamura on PlayStation.Blog.
Is the DLC part of the main Shadow story?
No. The base game has its own dedicated Shadow story, including his new Doom Powers and memories of his creation. The Movie Pack is a separate experience that lets players control Shadow in a way similar to the base game, but it does not continue that campaign.

Nakamura was explicit about the distinction: “This content will not have a story which per se that would relate directly to the movie.” The pack uses a movie-associated setting rather than retelling the film’s events.
Why is the Movie Pack set in Tokyo?
The added level takes place in Tokyo, a city Shadow visits in the film. Nakamura said the development team researched the real area and aimed to make a stage that felt recognizable while still working as a Sonic level. He described the appeal as being able to “play as Shadow in a real existing city.”

The 2024 interview also said movie information was tightly restricted during development: the game team had limited materials from Paramount and had not yet seen the film’s final scenes. That describes what the team knew during production at the time of the interview, not its current knowledge.
Where can you play as Movie Shadow?
SEGA’s December 6, 2024 notice sets clear limits on the alternate character. Movie Shadow is playable only in the Acts and Challenge Acts added by the Movie Pack. He cannot be selected for the base game’s Acts, Challenge Acts, or White Space. His voice acting is English-only, even if you play the game in another language, and the new stage has no leaderboard. See SEGA’s Movie Pack notice.

Is the Movie Pack included with the game?
That depends on the platform, region, edition, and current listing. PlayStation Blog’s September 2024 announcement said the pack was included with the Digital Deluxe Edition, but that announcement does not establish what every platform or region currently bundles. Check the edition details on the storefront where you plan to buy.
Steam lists the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack as DLC for SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS and describes it as “An additional level and skin for Shadow.” Steam also lists other add-ons separately, including a digital artbook with mini soundtrack. Store prices and package contents can vary by region and change over time. Check the Steam DLC catalog.
Xbox installation warning from SEGA
SEGA’s manual includes a platform-specific caution for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S: the game may crash if you download the DLC through Microsoft Store and attempt installation after the console has entered Shutdown (energy saving) or Sleep mode. SEGA advises not running the game during installation through Microsoft Store; if installation starts while the game is running, do not press the console’s power button. If the console enters Shutdown or Sleep after you launch the game, SEGA advises exiting and installing by its recommended method. Read SEGA’s game manual.
