That is a minority investment in KADOKAWA—not an acquisition of FromSoftware. A separate, 2022 disclosure shows Sony Interactive Entertainment also held a direct minority stake in the studio, while KADOKAWA remained its majority shareholder.
What Sony bought in KADOKAWA
On December 19, 2024, Sony and KADOKAWA announced a strategic capital and business alliance. The planned third-party allotment, completed on January 7, 2025, issued 12,054,100 new KADOKAWA shares to Sony for approximately ¥50 billion. Including shares Sony had acquired in February 2021, the companies said the investment would make Sony KADOKAWA’s largest shareholder, with approximately 10% of its shares. Sony and KADOKAWA’s announcement described an investment and alliance, not a purchase of the whole company.
KADOKAWA’s shareholder information, dated March 2026, lists Sony Group Corporation at 11.01% and identifies it as the largest named major shareholder. How KADOKAWA’s stake relates to FromSoftware
There are two corporate levels to distinguish: Sony owns shares in KADOKAWA, and KADOKAWA owns shares in FromSoftware. In a disclosure dated August 31, 2022, FromSoftware reported the following ownership after a share issuance:

The disclosure establishes that KADOKAWA was FromSoftware’s majority shareholder and Sony Interactive Entertainment already held a direct minority stake. These are the figures reported for 2022, not a verified current FromSoftware share register; a newer breakdown is not established by the cited company disclosures. Sony and KADOKAWA said they intended to strengthen cooperation to maximize the global value of their intellectual property. Examples in their announcement included potential joint investments in content, discovering creators, and promoting media mixes of their intellectual property. Those are stated aims, not confirmation that particular projects have been completed.

The announcement does not promise a FromSoftware acquisition, an exclusive game, or a specific release. Sony’s position as KADOKAWA’s largest shareholder should therefore not be read as proof that FromSoftware has been acquired by Sony or that its future games will become PlayStation exclusives.
