Bloomberg reported in November 2024 that Sony was in the early stages of developing a standalone handheld console designed to play PS5 games on the move. Sony has not confirmed the device. Its specifications, price, release date and game compatibility remain unknown.
What is the Sony PS5 handheld report?
The standalone handheld claim comes from Bloomberg’s November 2024 reporting, not a Sony announcement. The original Bloomberg article could not be independently reviewed here, so the report should be treated as unconfirmed rather than as evidence of a finished product or imminent launch. Sony has not publicly confirmed or denied the rumored device in the sources available.
That distinction matters: Sony’s currently documented handheld-style product is PlayStation Portal, which streams games rather than running PS5 games locally. Portal is not proof that a separate console is in development.
What has Sony confirmed about the rumored console?
Nothing about the standalone handheld’s hardware or availability has been confirmed by Sony. There is no verified release window, price, technical specification, or compatibility list. The report describes development as early-stage; it does not establish that the product will reach stores.

In a June 26, 2026 report, TechRadar quoted Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Hideaki Nishino discussing console hardware and playing in different locations. Nishino said, “My belief that a console is necessary for playing games hasn’t changed,” and, “We developed the PlayStation Portal as part of this initiative.” The remarks refer to Sony’s plans for gaming in other locations and its existing Portal, not an announcement of the rumored standalone handheld. This is secondary reporting, not a direct Sony transcript.
What Sony offers now: PlayStation Portal
PlayStation Portal is a remote player. For Remote Play, compatible games run on a paired PS5 and are streamed to Portal over Wi-Fi; the PS5 must be connected to broadband and powered on or in Rest Mode. Sony says a broadband Wi-Fi connection of at least 5 Mbps is required and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Actual performance depends on the network environment.

Portal also supports cloud streaming for a selection of PS5 games with PlayStation Plus Premium. Sony says this includes titles from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, as well as select digital games from a user’s library. The available selection varies over time, by country and region, and by subscription plan.
Sony lists Portal with an 8-inch LCD screen, 1080p display and gameplay up to 60 fps. Performance varies by game and network. Those figures describe Portal only; they are not specifications for the rumored console.

Can PlayStation Portal run PS5 games without a PS5?
Not through Remote Play: that feature streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5, so a PS5 is required. Portal’s separate cloud-streaming option can play eligible titles without streaming them from the user’s own console, but it requires PlayStation Plus Premium and is limited to the games Sony makes available for cloud streaming in the user’s country or region.
How Portal and the rumored handheld differ
| Question | PlayStation Portal | Reported standalone handheld |

| What network or subscription is needed? | Remote Play requires broadband Wi-Fi: Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps. Cloud streaming requires PlayStation Plus Premium; availability varies by country and game selection. | Unknown. |
| What games are supported? | Compatible games installed on the paired PS5 for Remote Play; selected catalog and library games for cloud streaming, subject to availability. | Unknown. |
| Is it confirmed and available? | Sony’s current product. | Reported as early-stage development by Bloomberg in November 2024; not confirmed by Sony. |
What the report does—and does not—tell PS5 owners
Sony Interactive Entertainment reported more than 95 million PS5 consoles sold worldwide on a sell-in basis as of June 30, 2026. That figure is context for the size of Sony’s console business, not evidence that a handheld is being developed or that it would find a particular level of demand.
