sortwindows61.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL. If Windows says it is missing, corrupt, or unable to load, repair Windows itself before searching for a replacement file.
Do not download sortwindows61.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into a system folder. The correct file depends on the installed Windows build and architecture, and a filename-only match may be outdated, incompatible, or malicious.

What is sortwindows61.dll
Public Windows file metadata identifies the file as SortWindows61 Dll, produced by Microsoft for the Windows operating system. It has been observed in Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and later Windows builds.
Recommended Free Tools
It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX runtime, .NET assembly, or ordinary game component. There is also no reliable evidence that one particular game, launcher, or application universally causes this error.

The file normally belongs to protected Windows directories:
| Windows installation | Typical system location |
|---|---|
| 64-bit Windows | C:WindowsSystem32 for native 64-bit files |
| 64-bit Windows running 32-bit software | C:WindowsSysWOW64 for 32-bit system files |
| 32-bit Windows | Usually C:WindowsSystem32 |
The names can be confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit counterparts. Do not move a file between these folders based only on its name.
Historical public metadata shows different versions and file sizes across Windows releases. Those records are not a current compatibility table. The correct copy must match your Windows build, servicing state, and architecture.
What the error message means
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because sortwindows61.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because sortwindows61.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading sortwindows61.dll.”
- “sortwindows61.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
A missing or not-found message can indicate that the file was deleted, quarantined, or damaged. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. The file may exist while another required component prevents Windows from loading it.
The “not designed to run on Windows” wording usually indicates corruption, an incompatible build, a damaged dependency, or a file that is not authentic.
First fix: install updates and repair Windows
Because sortwindows61.dll is a Windows component, use Windows servicing before reinstalling the application that displays the error.
1. Install pending Windows updates
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check the application again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
2. Run DISM
DISM repairs the Windows component store that Windows uses to restore protected files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that a restart is required.
The command can appear to pause at a percentage for some time. Do not close the window while it is working.
A successful result indicates that the restore operation completed. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, install pending updates first and run the command again. On managed or severely damaged systems, a matching Windows installation source may be required.
3. Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run SFC in the same elevated Command Prompt window:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
The result usually falls into one of these categories:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact. Continue with the diagnostic steps below.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the affected application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run DISM again, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, review the CBS log or use System Restore or a supported Windows repair path.
Manually running these commands requires patience and careful interpretation of the results. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while its repair function is available in the full version; it is optional, and DISM plus SFC remain Microsoft’s supported repair path.
Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a system file if it was modified, replaced, or detected as suspicious. Do not restore it merely because the filename matches.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the original file path.
- Open the detection details and note the file location and detection name.
If the detection identifies malware or the file was located outside a normal Windows directory, leave it quarantined. Run a Full scan and, when appropriate, a Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

Only consider restoring or allowing a quarantined file after its authenticity, path, digital signature, and source have been verified. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can allow malware to run.

Confirm whether the file exists and where
You can check the standard folders without downloading anything.
- Press Windows + E.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Search for
sortwindows61.dll. - If Windows is 64-bit, also inspect
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Right-click any matching file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab, file location, and version information.
A file with the correct name is not automatically genuine. A copy in a temporary folder, an application directory, or a user profile directory deserves additional scrutiny.
Do not delete a copy just because it is outside System32. Record its path first, scan it, and determine which executable is loading it.

If only one application fails
If Windows repairs successfully but one older application still reports the error, the application may be requesting an incompatible or missing dependency.
Use the program’s official repair process:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset, if offered. Reset can remove application settings and local data.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan files option before changing Windows files. If the issue began after an application update, install the current release from the vendor rather than copying an older DLL.
There is no verified evidence that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET specifically repairs sortwindows61.dll. Install those runtimes only when the affected application explicitly requires them or reports a separate runtime error.
Check architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL in place of its native dependency.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not:
- Copy a 32-bit file into
System32. - Copy a 64-bit file into
SysWOW64. - Assume “61” in the filename identifies an architecture.
- Replace a Windows 11 file with a file taken from Windows 8 or an old Windows 10 installation.
- Treat a file-size match as proof of compatibility.
If the file exists but the loader still reports “specified module could not be found,” another dependency may be missing. The affected executable, event log, and application installation details are more useful than repeatedly replacing the named DLL.
Update a related driver only when evidence points there
A graphics, storage, or device driver is not established as the normal cause of this Windows DLL error. Consider driver troubleshooting only if the problem began immediately after a driver change, Device Manager shows an error, or the affected program reports a separate hardware or graphics failure.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and review Device status.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Update Driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a large system, manually identifying which of many drivers is outdated can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates, while installation through the full version is optional; use the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update as the trusted source when possible.
Use System Restore for a recent change
If the error started after an update, driver installation, program installation, or configuration change, System Restore may reverse the system change without normally removing personal files.

What not to do
Do not use a random DLL download
Unverified DLL sites can provide:
- The wrong Windows build.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A modified or malicious file.
- A file that lacks a valid Microsoft signature.
- A replacement that hides the original component-store problem.
There is no verified Microsoft standalone download page for sortwindows61.dll. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, System Restore, a matching Windows installation source, or a supported Windows repair installation.
Do not run regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Available public analysis of sortwindows61.dll lists other exports and does not establish it as a COM or ActiveX registration DLL.
Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 sortwindows61.dll
It may produce an entry-point error and will not restore a damaged Windows component.
Do not use registry cleaners
A registry cleaner cannot reconstruct a missing protected Windows file and can create additional startup or application problems. Repair the component store instead.
If the error remains
Collect these details before attempting further changes:
- The exact error text.
- The executable that displays it.
- Your Windows edition, version, and build.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Every location where
sortwindows61.dllexists. - The file’s signature and version information.
- Recent Windows updates, driver changes, or application installations.
- Relevant entries in Event Viewer.
- Whether DISM and SFC reported repairs or failures.
To open Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Check Application and System around the time of the failure.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, use System Restore when an appropriate restore point exists. Otherwise, proceed with a supported Windows repair or in-place reinstall using installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture.

Is sortwindows61.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is identified in public Windows metadata as a Microsoft Windows system DLL. That does not mean every file with this name is authentic. The path, signature, build, and source still matter.
Is this file part of Windows 10 and Windows 11?
It has been observed in Windows system builds across Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and later Windows releases. The exact file differs by build and architecture.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not specifically for this file. Those packages may be relevant to a separate application error, but they are not established as the normal repair for a damaged Windows component.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Avoid doing so. A different computer may have a different Windows build, edition, architecture, or servicing state. Use Windows servicing or a matching trusted installation source instead.
Why does Windows say the module cannot be found when the file exists?
The named DLL may have a missing dependency, an invalid signature, the wrong architecture, or a damaged file. The message does not prove that the named file alone is absent.
Should I reinstall the application?
If only one application fails after Windows repair, repair or reinstall that application from its official source. If several programs or Windows functions report the error, prioritize Windows servicing and malware checks.
