Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWindows may show “The program can’t start because sketchupviewer.dll is missing from your computer,” “Error loading sketchupviewer.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.” The sketchupviewer.dll error belongs to the SketchUp software family, so the safest fix is to repair the SketchUp installation that requested it rather than copy a DLL into Windows.
The 60-second answer
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find SketchUp.
- Select the … menu, choose Modify, then select Repair.
- Restart Windows and try SketchUp, LayOut, or the related Viewer again.
- If Repair is unavailable, run the matching official SketchUp installer as administrator.
- Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history if the file disappeared again.
Do not place sketchupviewer.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. It is an application component, not a normal Windows system library.

What is sketchupviewer.dll?
sketchupviewer.dll is associated with Trimble’s SketchUp software family. It may be loaded by SketchUp, LayOut, SketchUp Viewer, or an older SketchUp installation. A historical SketchUp installation, for example, loaded a file from a path similar to:

That is an example of one older installation, not a universal location. The correct path depends on the product and version installed on the computer.

Public historical metadata records both 32-bit and 64-bit SketchUpViewer builds. That information is useful when diagnosing architecture problems, but it is not a reason to download a replacement file. The file must match the requesting SketchUp executable and its release.
What the error message means
The wording gives a useful starting point:
| Message | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
sketchupviewer.dll is missing |
The application cannot find its own DLL in the expected installation directory. |
sketchupviewer.dll was not found |
The file is absent, inaccessible, or the application is looking in the wrong location. |
Error loading sketchupviewer.dll |
The file may exist but cannot be loaded. |
The specified module could not be found |
The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. |
not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error |
The file may be corrupt, incompatible, the wrong architecture, or blocked by a damaged installation. |
The exact requesting program cannot be determined from the filename alone. Note whether the error appears when starting SketchUp, LayOut, Viewer, or a shortcut for an older release.
Fix 1: Repair the installed SketchUp copy
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged application DLL.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Close SketchUp, LayOut, Viewer, and any related processes.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for SketchUp.
- Select the … button beside the matching installation.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair in the SketchUp maintenance window.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the same shortcut that produced the error.
A successful repair should restore the file inside the application’s own directory and allow the requesting program to start. It should not place the file in a Windows system folder.
If several SketchUp versions are installed, repair the one associated with the failing shortcut. An older LayOut shortcut may use a different installation from the current SketchUp program.
If Repair is not available
Use the official Trimble installer for the same product and, where possible, the same release.
- Download the installer from Trimble’s official SketchUp account or download area.
- Save it locally rather than running it from a temporary browser location.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Choose the maintenance, repair, or installation option presented.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If repair cannot restore the file, uninstall the affected SketchUp release and reinstall it from the official installer. Do not replace an old Viewer DLL with one taken from a newer SketchUp installation.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus removed the file
Security software may quarantine an old, modified, unsigned, or infected file. A detection does not automatically prove that every file with this name is malicious, but it should never be ignored.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving SketchUp or
sketchupviewer.dll. - Expand the event and record the detected path and action.
- Compare the path with the SketchUp installation you intended to use.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are trusted:
- The file came from the official SketchUp installation
- The installation path is correct
- The file’s publisher and digital signature are appropriate
- The security event is understood
- A current scan does not identify the installation as compromised
If those checks are not satisfied, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall SketchUp from Trimble. If the file disappears immediately after reinstalling, check endpoint-security policy and the antivirus event rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 3: Reinstall the correct Visual C++ runtime
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency of sketchupviewer.dll, not necessarily to the named file itself.
Current SketchUp installation requirements include the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015. Older SketchUp releases may require an older runtime generation as well. Microsoft’s official packages include:
vc_redist.x86.exefor 32-bit applicationsvc_redist.x64.exefor 64-bit applicationsvc_redist.arm64.exefor ARM64 Windows applications
Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads, not a DLL repository.
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit SketchUp or LayOut process still needs the x86 runtime. Installing x64 alone does not satisfy a 32-bit application.

After downloading the appropriate package:
- Close SketchUp.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected SketchUp program.
Visual C++ can repair a missing runtime dependency. It will not recreate a missing sketchupviewer.dll; repair or reinstall SketchUp for that.
Fix 4: Check .NET and Windows optional components
SketchUp installers may install prerequisites such as Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2. A missing .NET component usually produces a different startup message, but it can prevent an older SketchUp installation from completing correctly.
To inspect Windows optional features:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Check whether the .NET Framework entries required by your SketchUp release are enabled.
- Select OK and restart if Windows makes a change.
Do not enable arbitrary legacy features as a substitute for repairing SketchUp. Use the requirements for the exact release being installed.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM are secondary fixes here because sketchupviewer.dll belongs to an application, not to Windows. Use them when several unrelated programs report damaged Windows files, Windows Update is failing, or the error began with broader system corruption.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC repair procedure.

If it reports that no integrity violations were found, return to the SketchUp repair path. These commands normally do not restore a third-party SketchUp DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the actual problem is a damaged application installation. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; reinstalling the affected SketchUp product remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Fix 6: Confirm the application architecture
Architecture mismatches commonly affect older installations.

- A 32-bit SketchUp process needs a 32-bit DLL and the x86 runtime.
- A 64-bit SketchUp process needs a 64-bit DLL and the x64 runtime.
- A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit SketchUp, but it does not make 32-bit application files interchangeable with 64-bit files.
Do not install both DLL architectures into Windows folders. Do not copy a file from SketchUp 8, SketchUp 2016, or another release into a current installation. A similarly named file can be the wrong binary even if it removes the first error message.
Recommended Free Tools
Repair the exact installation that owns the executable. If you cannot identify it, right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect the Target field. The target usually reveals which SketchUp version is being launched.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the symptoms support it
A graphics driver problem can cause SketchUp crashes or rendering failures, but it normally does not create a missing sketchupviewer.dll message. Treat driver work as a separate path when SketchUp starts but crashes during display operations, or when Device Manager reports a device error.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a manufacturer-provided driver, use the graphics vendor’s official support channel and match the driver to the computer model and Windows architecture. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the relevant package, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it does not replace repairing the SketchUp installation that owns sketchupviewer.dll.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It is intended for self-registering OLE or COM libraries that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. There is no reliable Trimble documentation establishing that sketchupviewer.dll should be registered this way.
Running a command such as this is therefore not a normal fix:
regsvr32 sketchupviewer.dll
It may produce an error or create the impression that the file is installed when the actual problem is a missing dependency.
If Trimble specifically instructs you to register a particular legacy build, architecture matters. Microsoft explains the scope and architecture of Regsvr32. Follow vendor instructions for that exact file instead of applying the command generically.

The old standalone SketchUp Viewer
Trimble ended downloads and support for SketchUp Viewer for Desktop on April 22, 2025. If the failing program is the old standalone Viewer, repair its original installation if it remains installed. If it is no longer installed, use an installer retained by your organization or move to a currently supported Trimble viewing option.
Do not substitute a DLL from another SketchUp release for the discontinued Viewer. If a current SketchUp installation works while the old Viewer fails, product retirement or an unavailable installer may be the real limitation rather than Windows corruption.
If reinstalling still fails
Collect these details before escalating the issue:
- The complete error message
- The application named in the shortcut or window
- The executable path
- The path where
sketchupviewer.dllis expected - Windows 10 or Windows 11 build information
- SketchUp, LayOut, or Viewer release
- Whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Any antivirus quarantine action
- Whether the file appears and then disappears
- Any dependency or installer-log errors
Also test from a new local Windows profile if the error affects only one user. Check folder permissions, redirected folders, and endpoint-security rules. If the failure began immediately after a cleanup, update, driver change, or malware-removal event, use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists. Microsoft describes System Restore as a way to roll back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files.
FAQ
Should I download sketchupviewer.dll from a DLL website?
No. A downloaded copy may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another SketchUp release, or fail because a dependency is missing. Repair or reinstall SketchUp from Trimble’s official installer instead.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Keep the DLL in the application directory created by SketchUp. A global copy can create version conflicts and hide the damaged installation.
Is sketchupviewer.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with SketchUp software and should be repaired through the product that installed it.
Does installing Visual C++ replace the file?
No. Visual C++ repairs runtime dependencies. It does not recreate a missing sketchupviewer.dll.
Will SFC fix this error?
Usually not by itself. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while this is normally an application-specific SketchUp file.
Why does the message say the module is missing when the file exists?
One of sketchupviewer.dll’s own dependencies may be absent, incompatible, quarantined, or inaccessible. Repair SketchUp first, then check the appropriate Visual C++ runtime and security history.
