Soul Sanctum is a former research institution on the western side of the City of Tears in Hollow Knight. Its scholars tried to harness Soul to resist the Infection, but the effort failed. The area’s final boss, Soul Master, rewards the Knight with Desolate Dive, a spell that opens up further progression options.
Where is Soul Sanctum?
Soul Sanctum is a sub-area on the western side of the City of Tears, in Hallownest—not a separate region outside the city. The route leads through hostile rooms and upward via platforms, elevators, and levers before reaching Soul Master.
The first room contains a Soul Twister. Defeating it opens the way upward; a Soul Warrior also guards the approach to the boss. This route overview is based on the guide’s description, not a claim that every room must be cleared to explore the area.

What happened to the Sanctum?
The Sanctum was a research center led by Soul Master. Its scholars sought to expand the mind and attain what they called “pure focus.” As the Infection spread, they tried to use Soul—the life force that animates bugs—to resist it. They collected Soul Totems associated with the Ancient Civilisation and extracted Soul from bugs, but their project failed and the scholars became infected.
“The mind still limits us so. How to break past its constraints? To attain a pure focus, is it even possible?”

This is the wording of an in-game lore tablet attributed to Record Aba. The Hunter’s Journal describes Soul Master as having “Hoarded soul hoping to stave off Hallownest’s affliction,” framing his motive through the game’s own text rather than a definitive outside explanation.
Which enemies are in Soul Sanctum?
- Soul Twisters: They teleport and cast spells, making them a persistent threat as you move through the area.
- Soul Warriors: Two are listed in the Sanctum, including one encountered on the route toward Soul Master.
- Follies and Mistakes: These hostile creatures also inhabit the area.
- Soul Master: The Sanctum’s final boss.
Expect combat while navigating its vertical rooms; the route description does not establish a universally best charm setup or strategy.

What do you get for defeating Soul Master?
Defeating Soul Master grants Desolate Dive, a spell that lets the Knight strike the ground with a dive attack. It is useful for progression, but it should not be treated as mandatory for every possible route through the whole game.

Is Soul Sanctum required?
Defeating Soul Master and obtaining Desolate Dive supports progression, but Soul Sanctum is not established as mandatory for every route through Hollow Knight. The Sanctum also contains optional items; Shade Soul specifically requires the Elegant Key route. If you are exploring rather than following a single completion path, distinguish the boss reward from the area’s optional pickups.
