The core appeal is its weapon-based combat. Critics in the sampled reviews praised the fighting system’s precision and dynamism, while noting that newcomers have accessible ways in and experienced players have depth to explore. PLAY! Zine praised the combat, maps, characters, and customization; DualShockers highlighted robust gameplay and campaign modes. These are reviewers’ assessments, not guarantees that every player will value the same features.
CD-Action’s review captured the balance between demanding play and immediate fun: “A very well done fighting game – nuanced and demanding, but also fun in simple instances of waving some big swords around.” The quote was reproduced by Metacritic alongside its November 14, 2019 review entry.

Common reservations
Some reviewers objected to the story modes’ presentation, visuals, or loading times, and others found parts familiar or criticized the DLC approach. Reversal Edge also drew criticism from some reviewers. Those judgments vary by reviewer and should be read as caveats, not as universal player experience.
How the fighting and modes work
Bandai Namco describes SOULCALIBUR VI as a weapons-based, head-to-head fighting game. Its Reversal Edge mechanic lets a player guard and respond to an opponent’s attack, turning a read into a counter opportunity. Steam’s feature description also identifies Soul Charge, a temporary power-up, and Lethal Hits, which can enable heavy combo damage. The game was released on October 18, 2018; Steam lists BANDAI NAMCO Studios Inc. and Dimps Corporation as developers and Bandai Namco Entertainment as publisher. Solo play
Steam lists Soul Chronicle, a story mode set in the 16th century that revisits events of the first SOULCALIBUR, alongside other single-player content. That breadth is a plus if you want more than versus matches, though the story presentation was a recurring criticism in some reviews. Steam also lists character creation, so you can make a custom fighter rather than only choosing from the roster.
Playing with others
The Steam listing includes online player-versus-player, shared or split-screen player-versus-player, and shared or split-screen play. These features make the game suitable for local matches as well as online bouts. The existence of online modes does not establish how busy matchmaking is today; the available review and store information does not confirm current player counts or server health.

Platforms, editions, and DLC
Bandai Namco lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam as platforms. Steam’s store page lists the base game, a Deluxe Edition, two season passes, and character or creation-set add-ons. Named DLC characters include Tira, 2B, Amy, Cassandra, Hilde, Setsuka, Haohmaru, and Hwang. The Steam listing says the Digital Deluxe Edition includes the game and a season pass.
Edition contents and availability can change by storefront and date. Compare the current contents of the edition you are considering with the base game and any add-ons; a season pass is not established as necessary to enjoy the core game. The review evidence’s concerns about DLC are worth weighing if you want a broad roster or prefer to buy a complete package at once.
Who should play it?
- A strong fit: Players drawn to weapon-based 3D fighting, distinct fighting styles, and a combat system that can be enjoyed casually or explored in depth.
- Also a good fit: Players who value custom-character creation, solo story modes, or local and online versus options in one fighting game.
- Consider carefully: Players whose top priority is cinematic story presentation, or who want all characters and add-on content included without comparing editions.
- Check before buying: Anyone choosing the game mainly for online matchmaking should verify current activity for their platform and region; the available sources do not establish it.
PC requirements to verify
Steam’s listing gives minimum requirements of 64-bit Windows 7, 8.1, or 10; an Intel Core i3-4160 or equivalent; 6 GB RAM; an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050; DirectX 11; and 20 GB of storage. These are listing details, not a current compatibility guarantee. Steam also notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024. Check the live store page for current game requirements and operating-system compatibility before installing.
