One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a like-for-like starting point, compare the MSCI Korea Index with the MSCI Taiwan Index: both target large- and mid-cap companies in their respective markets. Then check each index’s largest holdings and the companies’ different roles in the chip supply chain. The available profile observations show substantial exposure to Samsung Electronics in Korea and especially high exposure to TSMC in Taiwan, but their dates and profile variants are not aligned. Treat the figures below as dated examples, not a synchronized snapshot or current weights.
Choose comparable country benchmarks first
The MSCI Korea Index and MSCI Taiwan Index are designed to represent the large- and mid-cap segments of their respective national equity markets. That makes them a matched starting point for country exposure, but neither represents every listed company. MSCI describes their coverage in its Korea index profile and Taiwan index profile.

Be precise about what you are comparing. The MSCI country indexes are not interchangeable with broader local benchmarks such as the KOSPI or TAIEX, or with a fund that tracks a particular index. A fund’s holdings can also differ from its benchmark because of its own structure and implementation. Name the benchmark or fund and its coverage before drawing conclusions about national exposure.

In the MSCI profile results available for this comparison, Samsung Electronics accounted for 35.31% of the MSCI Korea Index. A different returned profile variant showed 34.55%, and the available information does not establish that the two figures share an as-of date. For the MSCI Taiwan Index, TSMC was listed at 55.16%, with profile data stated as of June 30, 2026; another result showed 54.00%.
These are not synchronized observations, so they do not support a precise same-day comparison. They do illustrate why the largest constituent matters: a country index can have meaningful exposure to a single company, and the displayed Taiwan profile showed a particularly large TSMC weight. Before using either figure as current, consult the relevant live MSCI profile and report its exact observation date and profile variant. Index weights change with share prices, corporate actions, and index reviews.
Understand what the chip exposure represents
Taiwan: TSMC and a broad set of end markets
TSMC is a semiconductor manufacturer, and its business is relevant to AI-chip exposure. Its 2025 annual report identifies high-performance computing (HPC) as one of its end markets, but also lists smartphones, the Internet of Things, automotive, and digital consumer electronics. The company’s semiconductor products therefore serve more than AI-related demand. See the TSMC 2025 annual report.
Rank #2
The report says TSMC is listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange as 2330 and that its American depositary shares trade on the NYSE as TSM. Buying an ADS changes the trading route, not the underlying company exposure.
South Korea: Samsung is a major constituent, but the mix is not established here
Samsung Electronics is a large weight in the MSCI Korea profile, so the index’s chip-related exposure cannot be understood without considering the company. However, the available official-company material for this comparison does not break down Samsung’s AI-related revenue or provide a directly comparable separation of its memory, foundry, and other businesses. Do not treat Samsung’s index weight as a measure of AI-chip revenue, or assume its business mix matches TSMC’s.

Account for what the country indexes include beyond chips
Country indexes include companies outside semiconductors, so a country index is not a pure-play AI-chip investment. The available profile snippets do not provide a complete, comparable sector breakdown for Korea and Taiwan; consult current provider factsheets if you need to quantify non-chip exposure.
A regional index is another option when the goal is broader exposure, but it does not isolate either country. The MSCI EM Asia profile lists both TSMC and Samsung among its leading constituents, alongside companies from other markets. That broader coverage dilutes country-specific exposure rather than replacing a focused Korea-versus-Taiwan comparison. See the MSCI Emerging Markets Asia profile.
Rank #4
Keep access route separate from company exposure
Investors may encounter exposure through local shares, depositary shares, country-market funds, or regional funds. Those routes can differ in trading currency, fees, taxes, domicile, and product structure. TSMC’s report confirms its Taiwan ordinary-share and U.S.-traded ADS listings, but it does not establish which route is suitable for an individual investor. Check the relevant fund documents and the rules that apply to your own account and jurisdiction.
