South of Midnight is a story-led, single-player action-adventure set in a macabre, folkloric version of the American Deep South. Its strongest appeal is its Southern Gothic atmosphere, family story and music that responds to the action; its combat and traversal use familiar third-person adventure conventions. Compulsion Games says it is aiming for a 10-to-12-hour playthrough. It launched on Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2025, with PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions listed as available from March 31, 2026.
What is South of Midnight about?
Hazel becomes a Weaver after disaster strikes her hometown and sets out to find her mother. Her journey leads through a fantastical, unsettling Deep South shaped by folklore, family history and the aftermath of a hurricane. She encounters Haints—corrupted creatures born from the world’s sorrow—and can heal the wounds of mythical beings drawn from real-life folktales. Compulsion Games describes the game as a narrative-focused action-adventure; PlayStation’s product page likewise emphasizes Hazel’s family history and the consequences of the storm.
The setting and storytelling are central to the experience, not just a backdrop for combat. If Southern folklore, eerie imagery and a character-driven search sound appealing, the premise is a strong reason to play. If you mainly want a combat system that breaks sharply from other third-person adventures, temper expectations: a TechRadar review of the PS5 version found the mechanics familiar to the genre.
How does the gameplay work?
South of Midnight is a single-player, third-person action-adventure—not a pure platformer or combat game. Hazel’s Weaving powers tie together encounters, traversal and puzzles, with platforming and exploration between story sequences. Her abilities develop as the narrative unfolds, so the full set is not available from the outset, according to Compulsion’s FAQ.

Combat, traversal and exploration
Combat centers on confronting Haints and using Hazel’s supernatural abilities. Traversal and platforming break up encounters, while puzzles give the player other ways to engage with the environment. Xbox Wire’s tips guide notes that a Guiding Strand helps with navigation, but chapters also contain hidden areas, optional finds and lore items. Exploration can therefore uncover context and rewards beyond the route to the next objective.
Progression and collectibles
Floofs can be used for skill upgrades, and Life Filaments contribute to a permanent health-bar increase: collecting three yields one upgrade, according to the Xbox Wire guide. These discoveries give you reasons to look around rather than rush through each chapter. Compulsion says progression includes some player choices, while Hazel’s abilities become available over the course of the story.

How long is South of Midnight?
Compulsion Games says it is aiming for a 10-to-12-hour playthrough. That is the developer’s stated target in its FAQ, not an independently measured average. Optional areas and collectibles may affect how long an individual takes, but the available sources do not establish a separate completion-time average.
Why does the music stand out?
The score is designed to participate in the storytelling. In an Xbox Wire interview with composer Olivier Deriviere and Audio Director Chris Fox, the developers describe music that grows with levels, player actions and the stories of mythical creatures. Songs and lyrical fragments can surface during play and build toward fuller performances at encounters. Deriviere summed up the idea: “This game is singing with the player.”

It is a good fit if you want a compact, atmospheric adventure where setting, folklore, family history and music carry as much weight as action. The mix of combat, platforming and puzzles offers variety, while optional discoveries reward curiosity. The main reservation is that its action-adventure mechanics may feel recognizable rather than especially novel. In its PS5 review, TechRadar praised the story, visuals, sound and gameplay mix, but described the mechanics as familiar; that is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus score.
