These symptoms call for different checks; the official guidance does not point to one fix for all of them.
Start by separating a freeze from a multiplayer problem
Note when the problem occurs and what still works. A game that stops responding at the main menu is different from a whole-PC lockup. If the game remains playable but movement snaps back or pauses online, focus on multiplayer responsiveness. If the lobby is absent or joining crashes the game, follow the relevant multiplayer path below.
Also compare where the problem occurs: can you start and play single-player, and does the same joining issue happen on other multiplayer servers? Keen Support asks players with join crashes to make these comparisons; they help describe the failure but do not, by themselves, identify its cause. Keen Support
Can’t join a friend’s game or the lobby is missing
Join from Space Engineers
- Open Space Engineers and select Join Game > Friends.
- Select your friend’s session there instead of trying to join through the Steam Overlay.
Keen QA suggested this workaround for a reported friend-lobby join problem. It is a sensible first check for that symptom, not a guaranteed solution to every multiplayer failure. Keen’s multiplayer support case

If the friend’s session does not appear
- On each player’s PC, including the host’s, open Steam and go to Settings > Downloads > Download Region.
- Set every player’s Download Region to the same region as the host’s.
- Return to Join Game > Friends and check whether the session appears.
Keen recommended matching regions for a reported missing-lobby symptom. The guidance does not establish that changing regions will fix other connection failures.
If joining still fails
Collect the latest Space Engineers logs from both the host and client around the time of the failed attempt. To locate them, enter %appdata% in Windows search and open RoamingSpaceEngineers. Include the logs when contacting Keen Support so the report covers both sides of the connection. Keen Support

Multiplayer pauses, lag, or rubberbanding
For rubberbanding or slow-internet symptoms, Keen’s gameplay troubleshooting guidance recommends enabling Options > Video > Render Interpolation. This is a setting to try for those multiplayer symptoms, not a remedy established for a frozen game or a system lockup. Keen’s gameplay troubleshooting page
Steam lists 5 Mbit/s or more as its recommended connection rate for multiplayer. Steam does not state a publication year on the cited technical-support page. Treat this as a recommendation, not a diagnostic cutoff: being below it does not prove that your connection caused the problem, and meeting it does not guarantee smooth play. Steam technical support

Game freezes at the main menu or crashes
Verify the installed game files
- In Steam, open Library.
- Right-click Space Engineers and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Verify Integrity of Game Files.
Keen included file verification in guidance for a report titled “Game freezes after a few seconds in main menu.” If the problem continues, consult Keen’s game-start troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming file verification addresses every freeze. Keen Support
For a crash while joining a server
Record whether the crash also occurs on other multiplayer servers or in single-player. If it persists, Keen Support’s response asks for a screen recording, the latest game log, and the Windows Event Viewer log from when the issue occurs. These details make the report more useful; the support case does not establish one universal cause for join crashes. Keen Support

If the entire PC locks up
A whole-system lockup is not the same observation as a multiplayer pause or a game-only freeze. Preserve the time of the failure and any available game log or Windows Event Viewer record, then report the issue to Keen if it recurs. One Keen support case involving a main-menu crash and system freeze noted logs consistent with a possible GPU-driver-level timeout. In that same case, QA also asked whether Steam recognized the running account as owning the game, including whether Family Sharing was involved. This is case-specific evidence, not proof that driver timeouts explain other freezes.
In that case, the log contained Service.OwnsGame: False. The Keen Software House QA Department explained: “This indicates that, at the time of the crash, Steam was not recognizing the game as owned by the account that was running it.” That interpretation applies to the ownership entry in that support case; it is not a general diagnosis of PC freezes. What to include in a support report
- Describe whether the game alone freezes, the whole PC locks, multiplayer pauses or rubberbands, the lobby is missing, or a crash occurs while joining.
- State whether single-player works and whether the issue happens on other servers.
- For friend-lobby trouble, include the latest logs from both host and client.
- For a persistent server-join crash, include the screen recording, latest game log, and Windows Event Viewer log requested by Keen.
