A reported comparison using an RTX 4090 showed substantial gains when moving from a Ryzen 7 3700X to a Ryzen 7 7800X3D.
However, the results do not prove that the game is always CPU-bound or that a processor upgrade is better than a GPU upgrade for every player. Resolution, graphics settings, scene complexity, hardware configuration, game version, and target frame rate all matter.

What the reported benchmarks show
The comparison reported by PC Guide, based on a third-party benchmark video, used an RTX 4090 and 32GB of memory while comparing three Ryzen processors:

| CPU | Average FPS | 1% low | Change versus 3700X |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 3700X | 66 | 52 | Baseline |
| Ryzen 9 5900X | 77 | 60 | About 17% higher average FPS |
| Ryzen 7 7800X3D | 110 | 85 | About 67% higher average FPS |
Those figures imply a roughly 63% improvement in the 1% low from the 3700X to the 7800X3D as well. That is meaningful because 1% lows provide a better indication of how smooth demanding moments feel than average FPS alone.

But these are reported third-party results, not a newly reproduced, fully documented laboratory test. The available coverage does not clearly establish every setting, the exact game build, memory timings, operating-system configuration, driver version, benchmark route, number of runs, or whether the same repeatable combat encounter was used each time. The underlying video is available on YouTube.
Why Space Marine 2 can stress the CPU
Space Marine 2 regularly places large numbers of Tyranids on screen. That creates more work than simply drawing additional models. The CPU may need to process enemy behavior, animation updates, spawning, hit detection, combat logic, physics, multiplayer synchronization, rendering submissions, and asset-streaming activity.
The game uses Saber Interactive’s Swarm Engine to support large enemy crowds. That does not mean every CPU thread is used equally or that Saber has publicly documented a precise thread-by-thread workload. The practical conclusion is narrower: busy encounters can create a substantial simulation and rendering-preparation workload, especially when the GPU is fast enough that it is waiting for the CPU.

The Ryzen 9 5900X has more cores than the Ryzen 7 3700X, but the 7800X3D’s reported advantage cannot be explained by core count alone. CPU performance also depends on instructions per clock, sustained boost frequency, cache capacity, memory behavior, architecture, platform, BIOS settings, and power limits.

The 7800X3D combines a newer Zen 4 design with a large 3D V-Cache, while also moving from an AM4 platform to AM5. The result may therefore reflect architectural improvements, cache, clocks, memory, and platform behavior in addition to the number of cores.
Two processor-identification errors in the original coverage are worth correcting: the Ryzen 9 5900X is a 12-core, 24-thread processor, not a six-core CPU, and references to a “Ryzen 7 8000X3D” appear to mean the Ryzen 7 7800X3D.
What the official requirements mean
Saber’s official PC requirements list these targets:
| Target | CPU | GPU | Memory | Stated result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i5-8600K | Radeon RX 580 or GTX 1060 with 6GB VRAM | 8GB | 30 FPS at 1080p Low |
| Recommended | Ryzen 7 5800X or Core i7-12700 | Radeon RX 6800 XT or RTX 3070 with 8GB VRAM | 16GB | 60 FPS at 1080p Ultra |
An SSD and DirectX 12 are also required. These are target specifications, not guarantees of a locked frame rate in every mission, combat scene, or multiplayer situation. They also do not specify 1% lows or frame-time behavior.

High CPU usage does not automatically prove a bottleneck
Overall CPU utilization can look moderate even when one important game thread is saturated. Conversely, a game can use many CPU cores heavily without every core contributing equally to frame rate.
Use several signals together:
- GPU utilization: If the GPU remains near full utilization, the GPU is probably the main limit.
- Per-core activity: A single heavily loaded core can matter more than the overall CPU percentage.
- Frame time: At 60 FPS, each frame has a 16.67ms budget; at 90 FPS, 11.11ms; at 120 FPS, only 8.33ms.
- Scaling: If a faster CPU raises FPS while the same GPU and settings are used, that is strong evidence of CPU sensitivity.
- Clocks and temperatures: Thermal throttling or a laptop power limit can look like a weak CPU.
A likely CPU limit is also suggested when lowering resolution produces little improvement and GPU utilization falls during the slowest scenes.
Resolution changes the answer
1080p
1080p Low or Medium is most likely to expose processor limits because the GPU has less rendering work. This is where an older CPU paired with a powerful graphics card may hold back average FPS and 1% lows.
1440p
At 1440p, the workload is often mixed. A fast CPU can still matter for high-refresh gaming and large battles, while the GPU becomes increasingly important as image quality rises.

- 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
- Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
- 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
4K
4K is usually more GPU-limited, but not always. TechSpot’s testing found circumstances in which a Ryzen 7 7800X3D limited an RTX 4090 at 4K, with performance reaching roughly 110 FPS. A powerful GPU can therefore expose a CPU ceiling even at a high resolution.
Upscaling technologies such as DLSS or FSR reduce the GPU workload and can make a CPU bottleneck more visible. Frame generation can increase the number of displayed frames, but it does not remove the underlying simulation work or guarantee lower input latency.
What the benchmarks do—and do not—prove
The reported comparison convincingly shows that Space Marine 2 can reward a faster gaming CPU under its test conditions. It supports the idea that the game is CPU-sensitive during demanding scenes, particularly with a high-end GPU.

It does not establish that:
- the CPU is always the primary bottleneck;
- CPU performance matters more than GPU performance at every resolution;
- more cores alone explain the result;
- the same FPS applies to Intel CPUs, laptops, consoles, or current-generation systems;
- the game is poorly optimized; or
- a GPU upgrade will not help.
Independent testing has produced a more nuanced picture. DSOGaming’s analysis and TechSpot’s testing show that results depend strongly on the GPU, resolution, CPU, and scene. Other testing has also shown high frame rates with a low number of active CPU cores under a specific setup, which is another reason not to turn one benchmark into a universal rule.

Should you upgrade the CPU or GPU?
A CPU upgrade is more likely to help when you use an older processor such as a Ryzen 3000-series chip with a powerful GPU, target high-refresh 1080p or 1440p gaming, see GPU utilization drop during combat, or gain little performance by lowering resolution.
A GPU upgrade is more likely to help when the graphics card stays near full utilization, lowering resolution or quality produces a large FPS increase, VRAM is close to its limit, or your priority is higher image quality and native 4K.
For an AM4 owner, a compatible X3D upgrade may offer a practical route without replacing the motherboard and DDR4 memory, but BIOS support must be checked. New-system buyers can consider an AM5 gaming CPU such as the 7800X3D or newer X3D models, while owners of modern CPUs should diagnose the actual bottleneck before buying hardware.
How to test your own system
- Use the same mission, route, and combat situation for every comparison.
- Warm up the game before recording results.
- Keep the game version, graphics preset, resolution, upscaling, ray tracing, V-Sync, and frame cap unchanged.
- Run at least three passes rather than relying on one encounter.
- Record average FPS, 1% lows, 0.1% lows, and frame-time graphs.
- Monitor GPU utilization, per-core CPU usage, clocks, temperatures, and power limits.
- Repeat at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K if you want to identify where the bottleneck changes.
- Close downloads, recording tools, launchers, and unnecessary overlays.
CapFrameX and PresentMon can help capture frame-time data. Monitoring overlays can also create conflicts; Focus Entertainment’s support guidance warns that some overlays, including RTSS and certain GeForce overlays, may cause problems.
Verdict
These Space Marine 2 benchmarks show genuine and potentially large CPU scaling: the reported 7800X3D result is far ahead of the 3700X, while the 1% lows improve as well as the averages. That makes a faster CPU particularly valuable for large battles and high-refresh gaming.
The careful conclusion is not that Space Marine 2 is universally CPU-bound. It is a CPU-sensitive game whose bottleneck shifts with resolution, settings, scene complexity, GPU speed, and frame-rate target. Diagnose your own GPU utilization and frame times before deciding whether your next upgrade should be a processor or a graphics card.
