These RX 9070 Gaming PCs Were Listed for Less Than the RTX 5090 Alone

Three RX 9070-series gaming PCs were listed below the RTX 5090’s launch MSRP, but the comparison was not performance-equivalent and the systems were not confirmed as immediately orderable.

Originally reported February 27, 2025: Three Newegg prebuilt gaming PCs featuring AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 or RX 9070 XT were listed at $1,749–$1,799—below the GeForce RTX 5090’s $1,999 U.S. launch MSRP. That comparison was real, but it was a launch-price comparison rather than proof that the systems matched the RTX 5090’s performance. The listings also were not confirmed as immediately orderable.

The three systems behind the headline

The original report identified three listings. Each was priced below the RTX 5090’s $1,999 launch MSRP, but each also included a processor, motherboard, memory, storage, case, power supply, cooling, Windows and a warranty—the parts that make a complete PC.

System GPU CPU Memory Storage Reported price
AVGPC Whirlwind Radeon RX 9070 XT Ryzen 7 9700X 32GB DDR5-6000 1TB NVMe SSD $1,799
iBUYPOWER Y40 Pro Radeon RX 9070 16GB Ryzen 7 7800X3D 32GB DDR5 RGB 2TB NVMe SSD $1,799
iBUYPOWER Y40 Pro Radeon RX 9070 16GB Ryzen 7 9700X 32GB DDR5 RGB 2TB NVMe SSD $1,749

The original listing report described the AVGPC system as having a 60mm AIO cooler, Wi-Fi, a tempered-glass case and Windows 11 Home. The iBUYPOWER systems reportedly included a gaming keyboard and mouse.

At those prices, the arithmetic was straightforward:

  • $1,999 − $1,799 = $200 below the RTX 5090 launch MSRP
  • $1,999 − $1,749 = $250 below the RTX 5090 launch MSRP

That does not mean the RX 9070 or RX 9070 XT outperformed the RTX 5090. It means a complete PC was listed for less than Nvidia’s flagship graphics card alone at launch.

The availability problem matters

The systems were reportedly listed with notification signups rather than confirmed preorder inventory. A marketplace listing or “notify me” page is not the same as a product that can be purchased and shipped at the advertised price.

Prices, component suppliers, seller information and availability can change. A listing can remain indexed after stock disappears, while a coupon or introductory price may vanish at checkout. Treat the reported figures as historical evidence from February 2025—not as live August 2026 deals.

  • AMD Ryzen 5 9600X 3.9GHz (6 Core / 12 Thread - Up to 5.4GHz Boost)
  • B850M Motherboard /w Wi-fi + Bluetooth

These are reference specifications, not guarantees about every card inside a prebuilt. Board partners can use different coolers, dimensions, clock speeds and power limits. A listing that says “RX 9070 series” may refer to either model, so confirm the exact GPU before ordering.

Why “cheaper than a 5090” is an incomplete comparison

The RTX 5090 is a flagship-class graphics card. The RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT target lower price and performance tiers. A complete RX 9070-series computer being cheaper than the RTX 5090’s launch MSRP is therefore a strong value headline, but not a like-for-like performance comparison.

The comparison also omits several variables:

  • MSRP versus street price: $1,999 was the RTX 5090’s launch MSRP, not a guarantee that cards were available at that price.
  • Different GPU designs: A prebuilt may use an OEM or budget board design with a different cooler, power limit and acoustics.
  • Component compromises: The motherboard, PSU, SSD, RAM and case may have been selected to hit a price target.
  • Changing prices: A later RTX 5090 could sell above or below MSRP, while the historical Radeon listings may disappear entirely.

The useful question is not “Does this $1,799 PC beat an RTX 5090?” It is “What complete system do I get for the money, and is its GPU performance appropriate for my games and display?”

What Radeon offers—and what GeForce may offer instead

Both RX 9070-series cards include 16GB of VRAM, and AMD positions the RX 9000 family around rasterization value, modern upscaling and frame-generation features. AMD says FSR 4 is exclusive to Radeon RX 9000-series cards and initially targeted more than 30 supported games, with additional titles planned. The platform also includes HYPR-RX, Radeon Anti-Lag 2 and Fluid Motion Frames.

Those features are useful only when the games and settings you use support them. Native rendering, ray tracing, upscaling and generated frames should be considered separately. Image quality, latency and game support can differ between implementations.

GeForce may be the better fit for buyers who specifically need Nvidia’s DLSS ecosystem, CUDA or creator-application compatibility, Nvidia-focused AI tools, or strong performance in particular ray-traced workloads. An RTX 5090 is also aimed at buyers who want flagship performance regardless of value.

There is no universal winner. The result depends on resolution, game engine, ray-tracing settings, upscaling mode, driver version and whether frame generation is being used.

How the CPUs change the value calculation

The reported PCs used either the Ryzen 7 7800X3D or Ryzen 7 9700X. The 7800X3D remains an attractive gaming-oriented AM5 processor, while the 9700X is a newer Zen 5 design. “Newer” does not automatically mean faster in every game, however.

At 4K, the GPU is more likely to limit performance. At high-refresh 1080p or 1440p, CPU differences can matter more, particularly in simulation-heavy or esports titles. The CPU should be judged alongside the GPU, monitor resolution and target frame rate—not in isolation.

1. Confirm the exact graphics card

  • Is it an RX 9070 or RX 9070 XT?
  • What is the board-partner model?
  • How long and thick is the card?
  • How many fans and power connectors does it use?
  • Can the case accept a replacement GPU later?

2. Inspect the power supply

For the RX 9070 XT, AMD lists a 304W total board power and recommends a 750W PSU. Confirm the PSU’s wattage, brand, model, 80 Plus rating and native PCIe cables. A high wattage printed on an unknown or proprietary unit is not enough. Also check whether the PSU can be replaced with a standard retail model.

3. Check the motherboard and upgrade path

Look for the chipset, socket, BIOS support, number of M.2 and DIMM slots, Wi-Fi generation, USB connectivity and display outputs. Determine whether the board is a standard retail model or an OEM-specific design with limited replacement options.

4. Verify memory and storage

Confirm that 32GB means two memory modules rather than one, and check the actual speed and timings. Identify the SSD manufacturer and model where possible, along with its NAND type. A 1TB drive can fill quickly with modern games, so check for a second M.2 slot and practical upgrade access.

5. Assess cooling and airflow

The AVGPC listing’s reported 60mm AIO deserves particular scrutiny. A small radiator may be adequate depending on CPU power limits and fan tuning, but it should not be assumed to provide premium cooling.

Check the radiator size, intake and exhaust fan layout, CPU temperatures under sustained load, GPU temperature, noise levels and whether the tempered-glass case has sufficient airflow.

6. Read the warranty and return terms

Find out who handles a failed GPU: the system builder, retailer or component manufacturer. Check the labor and parts coverage, dead-on-arrival policy, return window and whether opening the case affects warranty service. Marketplace purchases also require checking the seller, fulfillment method and feedback history.

Common traps with these listings

  • Out-of-stock pricing: An indexed price may no longer be obtainable.
  • Checkout price increases: Coupons, member discounts and introductory offers can expire.
  • GPU ambiguity: “RX 9070 series” does not identify the XT model.
  • Single-channel memory: Capacity alone does not reveal the memory layout.
  • Component substitutions: RAM, SSDs, motherboards, PSUs, coolers and graphics cards may change.
  • Poor airflow: Attractive glass cases can restrict intake.
  • Limited upgrades: Proprietary boards, power supplies or front-panel connectors can make future repairs harder.
  • Warranty friction: A system builder may require the entire PC to be returned instead of allowing direct GPU service.

How to evaluate a similar deal today

  1. Record the exact SKU, price, seller and fulfillment method.
  2. Confirm whether the machine is in stock and can be purchased—not merely placed on an alert list.
  3. Save a screenshot of the full configuration before checkout.
  4. Compare the total price after shipping and tax with current RX 9070 XT, RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 systems.
  5. Check the PSU, motherboard, SSD, RAM layout, cooling and warranty.
  6. Compare the complete system against the cost of building an equivalent PC from separately purchased parts.

For current vendor inventory, use the iBUYPOWER gaming-PC page or AVGPC’s gaming-PC collection, but treat any current listing as a new product to verify—not as proof that the historical Y40 Pro or Whirlwind configuration is still sold.
