Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 delivers the scale and brutality of its setting, with satisfying close-quarters combat against enormous enemy forces. But in James Whitbrook’s September 4, 2024 Gizmodo review, that spectacle sits atop a familiar combat loop, a repetitive campaign, and a story that does little to deepen its central character. It is most compelling if the Warhammer fantasy itself is what you want to inhabit.
What is Space Marine 2?
Space Marine 2 is an action game that follows Lieutenant Titus after the first Space Marine. He fights with the Ultramarines during the Fourth Tyrannic War, as the Tyranid invasion threatens the Recidious System and Chaos becomes part of the conflict. That setup gives Warhammer readers recognizable stakes, but the review finds that the story does not spend much time exploring Titus’s relationships or motivations.
Focus Entertainment describes a campaign playable solo or in three-player co-op, alongside PvE and PvP modes. The game is a Games Workshop-licensed property, and its presentation leans heavily into the visual scale and identity of Warhammer 40,000. Focus Entertainment’s official game page outlines those broad mode categories.
How does the combat feel?
The main combat rhythm moves between ranged attacks and melee. Ammunition pressure and incoming enemies can push players into close quarters, where parries and executions are central to surviving; executions can restore armor. The result is deliberately visceral: clashes feel forceful, and fighting through large groups is a major part of the game’s appeal.

#1 Best Overall
- Embody the superhuman skill and brutality of a Space Marine. Unleash deadly abilities and devastating weaponry to obliterate the relentless Tyranid swarms. Defend the Imperium in spectacular third-person action in solo or co-op modes.
- Purge the relentless Tyranid swarms as legendary Space Marine Titus in a spectacular new campaign. Play solo or with up to 2 friends in 3 player co-op.
- Enjoy intense, gory and fast-paced third-person action with hundreds of enemies on screen, from the creators of blockbuster co-op shooter World War Z.
- Standard edition includes: Base game, Macragge’s Chosen DLC, with 3 unique cosmetics for your Bolt Rifle, Chainsword & Power Armour
That loop is also the source of the review’s main reservation. Whitbrook finds the fighting satisfying, but repeated executions and limited changes to the basic combat make it feel familiar rather than mechanically inventive. The spectacle is strong; the combat does not evolve much around it.
What to expect from the campaign
Length and structure
Whitbrook estimates the campaign at 8–10 hours. It is largely linear, moving through corridors and combat arenas with recurring objectives. The estimate is the reviewer’s assessment, not a guaranteed playtime: pace and play style can affect how long a run takes.

Progression and story
Titus does not gain new abilities as the campaign progresses, so the player’s toolkit does not develop in the way a progression-heavy action game might. The story raises tensions around Titus, including characters questioning him, but according to the review it moves on without deeply developing those conflicts. Players looking for a richer character study or a campaign that frequently changes its objectives may find the experience thin.
What multiplayer does it offer?
The official page confirms the broad offering: a solo or three-player co-op campaign plus PvE and PvP. Whitbrook’s review, written around the September 2024 launch period, also describes three-player Operations, six classes with separate progression, and 6v6 PvP. Those details describe the game at that time; they should not be read as a current inventory of missions, maps, or content. The official page does not establish current counts or later additions.

Is Space Marine 2 worth playing?
It depends on which part of the experience matters most to you. If your priority is inhabiting a vividly rendered Warhammer battlefield and cutting through huge enemy forces, the setting and forceful combat have real appeal. If you want a campaign with substantial mechanical growth, varied objectives, or more developed character relationships, the review’s criticisms are worth weighing before you play.
For comparison with another action game or Warhammer title, focus on campaign length and objective variety, combat depth and progression, character writing, visual fidelity to the setting, and the shape of its co-op and competitive modes. Those are the areas that most define the strengths and limits described in this review.
