Spectre Divide was a free-to-play 3v3 tactical shooter built around a striking idea: each player controlled two bodies and could switch between them during a match. It shared familiar ground with Valorant—attacker-and-defender rounds, two-site objectives, weapon loadouts and combat abilities—but its defining twist was using both bodies to hold space, cover a route or create a trade.
This is now a historical preview, not a recommendation to install the game. Mountaintop Studios shut down Spectre Divide’s servers on April 17, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time. The studio said players could no longer log in and play after that time.
What was Spectre Divide?
Spectre Divide was a competitive, free-to-play tactical shooter from Mountaintop Studios. Matches put two teams of three against each other in attacker-and-defender rounds, with attackers trying to plant the ZEUS device at one of two sites and defenders trying to stop or defuse it.
Its familiar tactical-shooter framework included weapon loadouts, aim-down-sights gunplay and combat abilities provided by sponsor kits. The developer said those kits were designed with the game’s central Duality system in mind.

How did controlling two bodies work?
Duality gave each player control of two bodies in real time. The second body was called a Spectre, and players could swap between the two during a match. Mountaintop described the system as a way to “defend two sites at once, cover your own cross, or even trade yourself.”
In practice, the second body changed how a player could approach positioning and defense: rather than relying only on teammates to watch another angle, a player could place a body elsewhere and switch to it when needed. The two bodies also created a distinct way to take or answer a fight, since a player could use one body to trade for the other.

How was it like Valorant—and how was it different?
Calling Spectre Divide “Valorant-like” describes its broad tactical-shooter structure, not an interchangeable game. Both used small teams, attacker-and-defender rounds, two-site objectives, weapon choices and combat abilities. Spectre Divide’s documented match format was 3v3, and its signature distinction was Duality: one player could position and switch between two bodies.
That difference affected the basic tactical question of who could cover which angle. Spectre Divide let an individual player distribute their presence across the map through a Spectre, while the rest of its round structure remained recognizable to players of objective-based tactical shooters. The available facts establish those system-level similarities and differences, not a ranking of which game was better.

When did Spectre Divide launch, and when did it shut down?
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| September 3, 2024 | Steam Support lists the PC release date. |
| February 25, 2025 | The game became available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to Mountaintop’s announcements; the PlayStation Store lists the PS5 release date as February 25, 2025. |
| March 12, 2025 | Mountaintop said Season 1 had not generated enough activity and revenue to sustain the game and studio. |
| April 17, 2025, 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time | Mountaintop’s announced server shutdown took effect. The studio said players could no longer log in and play afterward. |
The game was free-to-play, but it depended on online service. The PlayStation Store listing said online play was required, so its former free-to-play status does not mean it remains playable after the shutdown.
Why did the game close?
In its March 12, 2025 letter, Mountaintop said the game’s first season had not reached the success needed to keep the studio and game running: active players and incoming revenue were not enough to cover day-to-day costs. The studio reported that approximately 400,000 players had played and peak concurrent play had reached approximately 10,000 across platforms. Those are Mountaintop’s approximate figures, not independently audited statistics.
