Check the startup output to confirm the plugin enables, and inspect its generated folder for configuration files. Plugin version support and dependencies vary, so check those before installing.
Before you install a plugin
- Confirm the server type and active directory. The folder must belong to the Spigot server you actually run, not a BuildTools directory or a separate vanilla server. Spigot uses
pluginsby default, though a startup option can point elsewhere. - Check the plugin’s requirements. Read its current Minecraft/server version notes and any listed dependencies or soft dependencies. Spigot says Bukkit plugins are likely to work in most cases, but that is not a guarantee: plugins that rely on internal CraftBukkit or Minecraft code may be exceptions.
- Get the plugin JAR from a source you trust. Spigot specifically warns against downloading Spigot server JAR files from arbitrary websites because they may be old or trojanized. That warning concerns server JARs; it is not a blanket finding about every plugin download source.
Install the plugin
On a server you manage locally
- Stop the server if needed to safely change its files, then open the active server directory—the folder from which the Spigot server starts.
- Copy the plugin’s
.jarfile into that server’spluginsfolder. Keep the Spigot server JAR in the main server directory; plugin JARs go insideplugins. - Start or restart the server. Watch the startup output and allow time for plugins to load and enable.
- After startup, open the plugin’s folder inside
plugins, if one was created. Review its configuration files and follow the plugin’s own setup documentation.
On a hosted server
- Open the hosting provider’s instructions for the specific server instance. Hosts differ in how they expose files and which directory is active.
- Use the provider’s file manager or its configured FTP access to upload the plugin JAR into the active server’s
pluginsfolder. - Start or restart the server using the host’s controls, then check its console or startup log for the plugin’s enable message or errors.
- Use the host’s file access to inspect the plugin’s generated data folder and configuration after it loads.
Do not assume every host supports the same upload interface or permits files to be changed while the server is running. Follow the provider’s directions; if troubleshooting an upload, stop and start the server rather than relying on a live file change.

Confirm that it loaded
A successful upload alone does not confirm installation. Check the server’s startup output for loading errors and whether the plugin enabled. Then look for its data folder and configuration under plugins. If the server reports a problem, compare the plugin’s stated version support with your server version and verify that required dependencies are present.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the plugin folder is missing or the plugin will not enable
No plugins folder
Verify that you have started the server as Spigot and that you are looking in the directory used by the running instance. Spigot’s default plugin path is plugins, but startup parameters can override it with --plugins <directory> (or -P). Check the command or host configuration if the default folder is not where expected.
The JAR is in the wrong directory
Put plugin JARs inside the active server’s plugins directory. The Spigot server JAR itself belongs in the main server directory; placing a plugin beside it rather than in plugins will not follow the normal plugin path.
